1:04:28 That's incorrect, we can actually sneak out of Leo's mansion without being noticed by Henry. It's another one of those untold alternate solutions that you mentioned with the safe early on. There's even an achievement for doing that.

In mafia 2 development they were supposed add a feature to buy cars and houses also betting at a horse track but due to 2k pressuring them for a release date and little time they couldn’t add those features .
For those of you who may be wondering why Mafia 2 is so inconsistent (This goes to Fuzzy too, btw), that's because one of the directors and one of the main writer behind the first game, Daniel Vavra quitted from the company when 2K started to cause creative differences, that's why there so much cut content (including fuctioning taxis and trains like in GTA 4) and why the whole game feels like a disjointed mess at times, 2K Czech couldn't get a hold of the other director from the first game Petr Vochozka so they had to settle with someone else who had a completely different vision from Vavra, also, the single mission in Sicily was going to be the size of a full campaign (you have no idea of how much content was cut from the final game to never be seen again) and the original story in Mafia 2 was suppoused to have the part of the game set in the 50's be set specifically in 1957 as opposed to 1951, that's why the 50's era is the most anachronistic of the two.

Mafia 2 is the game that could have been. It's a damn shame. Take 2 won't levy the resources for a proper remake. I'm inclined to believe they refuse to do this and give the Mafia series a proper shot in the arm because as long as Rockstar and GTA are under their thumb, they most likely wouldn't want any true competition for the open world crime giant that has just proven it can go 10 plus years a title now. And eventually They may want to have Rockstar do a Mafia centric period piece compatible to RDR so having the Mafia series remain lack luster most likely benefits them more in the long run. The bungled and underwealming release of the definitive edition trilogy and the rumblings of Mafia 4 being a prequel set in 1910s Italy opposed to the highly requested and anticipated Las Vegas and 70s/80s eras, speaks to this idea.
Daniel Vavra, one of the lead writers for Mafia 2, has explained in an interview 3 years ago that Henry was NEVER supposed to be a rat. Instead, it was Falcone's plan to frame Henry, Vito and Joe in order to get them killed without any direct involvement in their deaths, to avoid suspicion. He also mentioned that there would be multiple endings, where Vito could potentially die, end in prison, or Joe would die instead, and so on. He left the studio due to creative differences at the time, which would explain why some aspects of the story seem out of place.
@ReichLife
4 ай бұрын
So he was a rat, but simply originally lead writer had different idea. With what actual game provides, Henry was clearly a rat.
@jd9689
4 ай бұрын
@@ReichLife That's not how it works... You're following the "It makes sense for this character to do this because you're seeing him do it" logic. It's a frequently used poor defense of poor writing. I'm not saying the game is poorly written, but as Fuzzy points out, there are places where the story fails to explain why some things happen the way they do. Henry being a rat comes out of nowhere, when he has no real reason to betray them, it has no plausible explanation, and is never hinted at, with the flimsy exception of Henry lacking a sicilian accent (which Vito doesn't have either anyway).
@ReichLife
4 ай бұрын
@@jd9689 Except that's exactly how it works... In actual released game, Henry was an actual rat, which is stated from several in-game sources from different camps. Argument that he wasn't literally is far more irrational given that. It comes out of nowhere? If it did had serious then it would only create another problem of why Vito and others didn't see from the get go. Entire point of being good spy/rat/etc. is that he isn't blatant one.
@jd9689
4 ай бұрын
@@ReichLife Yeah, no. There are no "several cutscenes" that hint he was a rat at all, you're making that up. Vito questions his lack of an accent at the distillery shootout chapter and that's it. And do you mind explaining why a rat would be going out of his way to sell drugs without the go-ahead of his boss? Why he would break the rules of his organization for personal profit and share it with his alleged friends? Why would he go out of his way to commit a crime that would potentially lead to him being killed by the mob and making him useless as an informant? Why be so cautious up until this point and then throw the whole thing out of the window for drug money? It doesn't make sense **at all.** That's not how it works, the game doesn't establish it, and the idea that you take the writing at face value is terrible.
@ReichLife
4 ай бұрын
@@jd9689 Quite a denial you're showcasing. Firstly? Triads stated he was such. Secondly? Leo. Thirdly? Falcone. So yeah, you're the one making shit up. You don't see sense in it? Can't accept reality? That's rather your issue. One thing is to criticize specific plot point, another to continuously deny it's existence despite game time and time again blatantly stating that it is a thing.
My favorite gameplay bit about Mafia II for me is the simulation driving mode, which you didn't mention for some reason. It's SO much fun, especially in faster cars, or cars with wobbly suspension. It's so intuitive and honestly, I think it's the best driving model in a non-racing game. Each car has a different set of physics, different suspesion setups, upgrades matter, tires change the grip level too.

While probably not my favorite game experience of all time, Mafia II has my favorite story of any game I’ve ever played and this game will always have a very special spot in my heart

A little detail I’ve always enjoyed towards the end of chapter 9, when going to see Eddie at the Falcon appears as an objective, if you don’t switch out of your dirty clothes you’ll get a special cutscene where you’re forced to get different clothes, this is skipped if you arrive at the objective with a new outfit that didn’t go through the sewage earlier

And to add insult to injury, every store owner in the game has lines for when he enters their store and they comment on his smell, including the body shop guy. They really recorded several more lines for this one specific moment.
You can actually sneak Leo Gallante out of the house without Henry knowing using bedsheets. Additionally, there is a secret cutscene between Vito and his sister’s husband if he goes to their apartment before Vito beats him up.
What I really like about this game is that is was set mostly in the 1950s and there aren't a lot of good games set in the 1950s. Another thing I liked was the music, this game introduced me to artists that I still listen to today such as Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf, Screamin Jay Hawkins ,and Louis Jordan. Also a fun piece of trivia, the guy who voices the DJ on Delta radio also voices Lee Everett on the Walking Dead.

When I first played Mafia 1 I gave up during the racing mission and started the second one (which I've played multiple times now) and the thing I loved the most about those games as a Pre-Teen was how driving was more conscious than GTA, having to not accelerate too much because of the police blew my mind that said, mafia 3 disappointed me so much because for the first time I felt like Mafia was trying to "catch up" to GTA by losing it's more unique vibe

Robbing the gun store is the #1 way to earn at least 2k at the beginning of each chapter. It's so satisfying to walk in, show the business end of your shotgun, and take the money. Speeding off in the most badass way possible. I You could even hit them in the middle of escorting someone to look even more badass
Mafia II is my favorite game ever made. Historical GTA with more in-depth mechanics, especially the police system. I love the characters, I love the story, and it's cliches are part of the charm
Mafia 2 is still my favorite out of the series while not perfect I love Vito and Joe's relationship and how vito viewed the mob differently from tommy
The Fleece Johnson part got me 😂😂😂😂
Mafia 2 was one of my favorite games in the series, the game would've been perfect had the devs had enough time to add more side missions as a breakaway from the story but im happy with the way it turned out, the whole Henry being a cop thing kinda reminded me of Troy from Saints row 1, where it reveals that he's a cop at the end but during his missions early on it shows you hints that lead up to that moment.
My experience with mafia 2 was a pretty strange one. Idk why or how, maybe my disc was scratched or something, but like 5ish hours into the story i experienced a glitch where every time i would drive to one specific building it would flag the current mission as completed and mark my next objective to drive home. And the entire rest of the game was pretty much me driving to that street corner and back home to watch a cutscene rinse and repeat until roll credits.

Worth noting that when you get to Leo’s house, if you pick the right route, you can lead Leo out of the house without Henry seeing you. You’ll take Leo to the train station and the game continues on as usual.
This is my new favorite channel man. I like your style of critique, it has this "whatever" feeling to it and your content is fun to binge 😂😂😂keep it up
I used to be so obsessed with this game before it came out, having been a huge fan of the original and the 1950s. I was very active on the forums (I was like 12 without much better to do) and kept a list of all of the cars and what they were based on, updating it with every trailer and gameplay footage. I was naturally disappointed with the end product, nothing could measure up to that level of hype, but it is by no means a bad game. It just hurts see how much was cut, what could have been.
One of the most underrated story in gaming and a great video as well Keep up the good work
There is a mod called Friends for Life, that actually remade Mafia II in a open world, the hard part is that you need to figure out what combat arenas you need to do to progress the story, because the mod doesn't tell you, I still have no idea how to access the hotel, even that other did.
One of The most underrated story's in Gaming And a great video as well Keep up the good work

Just played through Mafia 2 Definitive Edition, a good game still holds up today, got many quirks and its great how much details for example the vehicles have. The story is good, the world is fine, but after it ends I didnt find much else to really do. The ending and the "DLC" show how much got cut out from the game.
Sure, I got time for a quick Mafia retrospective before bed.
That fleece Johnson bit was legendary.
this game is truly underrated its a masterpiece.
its insane how much you and pure kino (sopranos recap) sound EXACTLY the same
I really admire how passionate you are about these games, Fuzzy.
You can escape with Leo without meeting Henry. He would chase after the car letting off shots.
That. What a walk trought memory lane.
Came to the comments to explain the Daniel situation, but other's have beat me to it. Perhaps you could look into it when doing Mafia 3. Much love. This video and channel deserves more engagement. ❤
53:32 fun fact Frankie Potts is the protagonist for the promotional site The Story of Frankie Potts which details his investigation into the criminal underworld
The main writer of Mafia and partly Mafia 2 once said on a stream that Henry never should've been a rat and the ending should've been completely different
Cheers my guy 😎

man i super enjoyed my first playthrough of mafia 2. i hadnt played one and knew nothing about the game other than it was mafia related when i started. one of the best stories ive ever played through.
Just played this game for the first time this month so the timing couldn’t be more perfect. I don’t always agree with your takes on these games but loved the video regardless. Really a fantastic game.
i just made a video on mafia 2 a couple days ago! it was my first video and i can easily say it was no where as detailed as yours! great video as always!
Holy cow I just finished this game for the first time 4 days ago! Perfect timing Mr slippers!
I’m just wrapping up playing this myself. Gonna watch the rest of this as soon as I finish it.
Played this for the first time in December and enjoyed it a lot.
Joe's Adventures could have been so good if it followed the main game's mission structure, I actually finished it myself, the rest of the story revolves around Joe making connections with the Falcone family, and it makes the transition between the prison chapter feel less Jarring, but it's absolutely bogged down by the stupid mission structure.
I think something that was unintentionally really sad was the last words Vito says to Joe. It's very likely Joe's last thoughts were that Vito sold him out to save his own ass.
Great video as usual really loced it Also : 1:10:43 on the topic of henry being an agent i have a theory that the events of enter the dragon ( and most of the later chapters ) are planned by the vincis to have a reason to get rid of falcone in fear of losing their grip due to the death of Clemente and most likely just seize control over the entire city for themselves Which expalins why there seem to be very few clues pointing to Henry's betrayal and why Vincis were able to figure it was Joe and Vito were behind the massacre in Chinatown
Definetly my favorite Mafia game. I played first and it was alright, and went to this one and it was awesome. The city, even if not that lively, was full of details, exploration was rewarded with posters and magazines, few car customization options is nice addition; its truly a jack-of-all-trades game with alot of missed potential. And with all the beta explorers and production ideas that have been and are still being uncovered, it could have been a masterpiece of decade. I still replay it every few years. Thanks for covering this game!
alot of the open world stuff happens in the dlc where you play as joe and another new character jimmy there are mission markers like in most other open world crime games
Another banger Fuzzzzzz
Cheers, Fuzzy, great review. Is a great game, but never knew about the DLC. Although it sounds as if that isn't a bad thing. Really looking forward to Hit and Run! Man, I loved that game. Take it easy, and see you next time.
1:31:04 I'd guess they added the informant plot point late in the day to make it different to a similar plot at the end of Mafia 1.
our cze dub is genius, an absolute treat for those that understand the language but the eng version is also great it's a great summary from you I've been watching for a bit and your content is great I enjoy these retrospectives and this one is no different❤
Seriously man... The "race to the mansion" gave me so much trouble the first time I played through, I rave quit for several months!
6:47 If you think that's jarring then wait until Mafia 3 "Stones Unturned" DLC actually has us saving ENTIRE WORLD from nuclear war(Or at least from one guy selling nukes to wrong people)... now that's jarring to see in a Mafia game XD
You have to do Mafia 3 , the gameplay may be buggy but the storyline is absolutely incredible!!!
Seeing this on a Sunday is like slipping out of my foot bath and into some warm, fuzzy slippers. ❤
something ive just noticed, the voice actor for Vito also voiced the main character for the ps2 game, Made Man and in that game there are flashback levels to the character's time during war. A small coincidence but interesting to me haha
I’ve been genuinely so excited for this game, easily my favourite Mafia.

The first game was brutal sometimes in health and ammo. I even remember getting stuck on the modded racecar mission and pulling out the map/poster that came with the game to find the best route.
If I could only play one game for the rest of my life, it would be Mafia II. The atmosphere, the game world, the characters, the dialog... it all just feels so warm and cozy, and keeps me coming back after more than a decade. The story is great, and the gameplay is really solid. The driving in particular is my favorite in any game- a great balance between fun and authenticity, especially on simulation mode with the 50s cars. I also love how there's so many color variations for Vito's suits, giving some serious mafioso dress up vibes.

never played any mafia games but im sure it will be a fun watch
this game would have beeen even more great had the developers had time to finish their ambitious ideas. the game is still solid as it is which is huge kudos to the devs as they had to crunch and cut out alot of ideas and mechanics to meet the deadline. The passion in games is not the same today as it was in the ps2 era and ps3 era. sure its the companies that f the developers up but back then developers always came up with smart solutions to their limitations. this game mafia 2 forever be in my top 10 games of all time
