She also stood up for black performers Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington when Hollywood producers balked at having them in her movie. New York was more integrated than Los Angeles so at first she didn't understand why the producers didn't want to cast them. She vouched for them and their appearance in the film boosted their careers. Similar to how Marilyn Monroe supported Ella Fitzgerald being hired to appear at the Macambo (I think) nightclub. She told the owner if he booked Ella, she'd be at every show and he could advertise that. He did, Marilyn was at a front table for every performance, people came to see Marilyn, heard Ella sing, and Ella's career took off! I'm proud that both of these women, looked to as the epitome of white blonde female beauty, each stood up for black performers they admired and helped chip away at racism. When Clark Gable started filming Gone With the Wind in 1939, there were separate restrooms at the soundstages labeled "White" and "Colored." He went to the producer and said, "You take those signs down or you've lost your Rhett Butler!" They took them down. Hattie McDaniel was the first black actress to win an Oscar for her role in that movie. She received the Best Supporting Actress award.

I think she thought if it was THAT out in the open, as it started to be in the early 1970s with gay liberation, that it was like promoting it in society and would have an undue influence that could in our society hurt children and the family... Because i think even though she accepted gay people, there was still the idea that it wasn't a GREAT thing and that there shouldnt' be an actual shift in society... I can see why someone of her era (I mean, the woman came of age in the 10's!) could believe that, while at the same time saying gays and lesbians should not be censured and should be appreciated for themselves, their talents and contributions, but that those who happened to be gay or lesbian should keep their sex lives more on the private side... Mae West was born female in Brooklyn 1893, the eldest daughter of a model & prize boxer who became a policeman. She initially worked in Vaudeville under the name Baby Mae. In her first Broadway production she used the name Jane Mast she was noticed by a reviewer who called her Mae West which she kept as her screen name. Apart from the influence of Vaudeville she was influenced by "The Pansy Craze" of drag acts popular from the 1930s -40s. She developed the persona of a parody of a woman. She exaggerated her swinging hips etc, acting like a brazen hooker. She was once jailed for obscenity & later said "I love censorship, it has made me rich". As her films were heavily censored she added more risque material so less of the original was removed. Her last film bombed, it was a dreadful adaptation of Gore Vidal's bizarre novel Myra Breckinridge & despite the star studded cast bombed; Raquel Welsh played the ambitious transgender actress & West her ruthless agent. Mae was old & was put on a trolley to move, she couldn't remember her lines so was fed them through a radio ear piece. The trouble was that it was on the same frequency as a cab company & she would often repeat their directions. I like this absurdity to the end of her film career, it is more interesting than Dietrich's dull finale a few years later with Bowie in Just A Gigolo which was received badly by critics & audience. West was not a man, she copied drag queens.

Actually if she had an ectopic pregnancy and lost one ovary or more she may have had a lack of female hormones and perhaps started masculinising in time. Though simply age could have caused the bodyhair too, I do not think she looks masculine, just an older heavier woman. I doubt her brother would sound and look like her LOL

No one reaches high-level fame unless they are owned by the entertainment industry, and none of their lives are what they portray or what we are told. They are all fictional characters playing roles, on stage and off stage. You may not want to believe the tales, but don't believe any of the mainstream narratives either.

One friend a long time ago who was very gay said that about ten years before her death he stopped to see if a limousine parked on the side of the road needed assistance and was met by Mae West, and while her driver had already called for help. But Mae kissed him on the forehead for being gentleman enough to stop. He told me while women never interested him, he got an erection from her sheer sex appeal nonetheless, even as an old woman. She could do that to men.

Today, we eat healthy and exercise with the right vitamins to ward off deep voices, losing hair, no sex drive, and beards growing! She was actually a lot older than people thought! She purchased her beautiful apartment building when they did not accept the black boxer that she was dating! They dated for years. Loved her! She also got her swag from black jazz artist of that time! I loved her one-liners! It's not the men in my life. It's the life in my men! 😅 Good review, though! Life is full of surprises!.🎬⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In August 1980, West tripped while getting out of bed. After the fall, she was unable to speak and was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, where tests revealed that she had suffered a stroke. She died three months later on November 22, at the age of 87.

It makes me think about Angel storyline in 'Pose'.. and the research i did after watching that show.. and i believe its possible that some of our beloved Bombshells are/were indeed TransWoman or DragQueens Passing for Bio/CisWomen.. similar to w.o.c who would pass for white. . While. It also makes me think of how the standard of beauty & misogyny impacts women(woc specifically).. And How when women have strong features like full lips, strong/high/definitive cheekbones, wide nose, prominent chin.. heavy set.. thick set.. broad shoulders (esp if tall.. in gen.. cuz ik Mae is listed 5'0).. ppl will question their sex & gender.. Like Joseline Hernandez, Ciara, Wendy Williams, Teyana. Juss for some current examples.. So it's interesting. But i think allat together says .. It doesnt matter.. ppl are ppl and all look/are different & the same in many ways.. Its her/their character, words & all else that they left behind that stood the test of time & really mattered/(s) Take the meat. Spit out the bone..

Love love love how detailed and meticulous you are whenever you cover a celebrity. I’m a big Mae West fan. Another fantastic job reporting on facts & rumors. Well, those rumors could be true but you do your darnedest getting answers the best you can. Not just for Mae but all you cover. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
