Madrid - Swiatek seals epic as Big 3 emerge, Rublev glory despite illness + Rome preview

Спорт

It's finally over! After two weeks of action, the Madrid Masters has come to a close with Iga Swiatek coming through an epic final against Aryna Sabalenka to capture her first Madrid crown, and Andrey Rublev snapping his losing streak and overcome illness to claim his second 1000 event with a battle over surprise finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime.
With Madison Keys finding form to reach the semis, Rafa Nadal earning a few wins in his final (?) Madrid outing, plus retirements and withdrawals aplenty in the ATP draw, the trio chat through the highlights from the past week on tour.
They also look well ahead to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals draw in Seville in November, lament the ending of the TSITSIDOSA relationship recently announced on social media, reflect back on the infamous blue clay Madrid event of 2012 and make quarter by quarter predictions for the upcoming Rome Masters which have already got underway.

Will there be an English translation of the Carota book? I need to have a copy 😂 the whole carrot thing is pretty surreal and Jannik is such a straight forward guy lol.

Good point that Mensik and Lehecka were playing their first tournaments on clay, and Madrid is not the easiest tournament to have as your start to the season. However Alcaraz' injury is with his forearm, so would be more down to the balls or his own play rather than adapting to the surface specifically, he did also play Rio and Buenos Aires this year. I don't think Medvedev didn't want to be there, in his R1 he was on the brink of defeat against Korda but dug in to win the 2nd set tiebreak and win the 3rd. I think if we had seen the Medvedev of old on clay he would have checked out there. He looked like he really tried to stay in his match against Lehecka. His is the only case where the condition of the clay at Madrid could be questioned, I know Madrid have had issues in the past so would be interesting to know if anything happened differently in the preparation this year

Only FAA could be gifted a final, be super fresh only playing 6 games in the 5 days leading up to the final, go up a set against a player who should have been in hospital, and still lose it! I thought his mentality has improved but he absolutely fell apart despite Rublev not really being able to apply much pressure
