MADRID MARATHON 2022 HITTING THE WALL
In this episode of The Wu I'm in Spain to run the Zurich Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Marathon 2022 trying to help my brother with pacing to complete his first ever marathon. It was a roller coaster of a run that unfortunately ended by hitting the dreaded wall.
This vlog captures the emotion and journey many runners may face when running the brutal distance of a full marathon.

I think his biggest problem might have been you (in a nice way). I was running with my Dad, and the pressure to keep up when i felt so sore put me in such a bad mental spot for it. Especially cause i felt so bad and he seemed to be alright. I had hurt my thigh a few weeks before the run and it wasnt a good first couple of miles. I let him go ahead for like 4 miles and then my attitude switched when i was alone and i managed to catch up to run the last 4 miles with him. It was great, but i needed that time alone. That being said, he needed you at the end. Well done for getting him over the line. Congrats to you both, it was really inspiring 🎉

I think for his first marathon I should have made him run the first half slower and maybe if he wanted to push near the end.

@TheWu If only, but I know from experience, first timers get wrapped up in the atmosphere 😂 My first time I ran the first half way too fast and was like wow I'm bossing this and then reality hit and I crashed hard. I think you need to learn the hard way. Since watching this video, I've been marathoning all your videos. The advice and experience you give is invaluable. Was gutted for you in the Amsterdam Marathon cause I know you wanted that sub 3 hour. But getting back up despite the pain? That's an achievement there. Well done! You're a genuine inspiration, and you've kept me sane during an injury/covid break

@@oneofusisboardhaha same , just ran my first 2 weeks ago with only around 2 1/2 months of serious training . after running the first half i thought this surely was going to be a breeze , but that wall was just something else . i couldn’t get past it until late in mile 24 , off of the adrenaline to finish haha
Great resilience at the end 👍. I’m sure he’s still feeling it now 😄

Wow, what a fantastic adventure. Congrats to you both, and your brother is an absolute trooper. The Angel on skates was amazing! Looks like the support was fantastic. Was looking for advice on my first marathon, and learnt a lot of what not to do! Cheers.

Haha unfortunately not this year. My brother may tackle it one time again but I won’t be there for it!
You hear about hitting the wall in the marathon,but until you actually hit it you have nooo idea of what you have to go through to get to the finish. Congratulations brother 🎉

This is too funny. Us brits must all think alike. I was number 7259 and ate the deep fried fish from El Bacalao de la revuelta the day before the marathon like yourself (it was tasty) and then followed it up with a hot chocolate and 5 churros. It was an evil course so won’t be going back. I got a PB still at 3:58 so happy days 😎

Haha very true! Yes I personally would not pick this for racing, so respect those who do.
Found you videos and they are all great. I am thinking about doing the madrid marathon next year was it that tough?
@TheWu
Жыл бұрын
Although I didn't race for a time for this one, I would say its a fairly tough course. Elevation through some of Casa de Campo was really tough and although not crazy warm it did heat up with the sun towards the 2nd half with limited shade. Not an fast course for breaking PB's thats for sure! However a very nice route.

Can you recommend a good place to stay that’s close to the race village and start point, please?

I think we stayed in a Airbnb in the area called Sol. The public transport on the day using the metro was very easy to get to the race village.
Done it and was brutal… hill after hill

Thinking of signing up to next year's... would you recommend Madrid for a first marathon?
@TheWu

I would recommend it for a nice route and enjoy the run, but it's a tough course to race for a fast time.
I was there and run the half, was a great event!

Oh hey, that's really mean-spirited. Why would you comment that about someone? Lots of athletes would be classified as being obese if you went by BMI scale numbers. It's down to training, not weight.
