I agree. But it's not consistent. Women in popular music went stagnant in the early 00's. Then Lady Gaga changed everything. I know that saying this on a Madonna music video is going to get me hate-comments, but I assure you as a non-biased fan of both women and someone who's witnessed both of their careers first hand, it's true. There was pre-Madonna and post-Madonna epochs of pop music. Now it's more relevant to study the industry from a pre-Gaga perspective.

I guess you can't get this version on Spotify. (It's dumb because its one her official songs, but they have a slow version of it that I don't care for) I have to do that Local download thing to get it on my Spotify. What a beautiful eyes she used to have

The video implies that the joyride was the grandmother's idea -- see her watching the car chase at 3:49 and responding like she wants to be in the car on the television, wanting to feel that for herself. The video also implies that Madonna's character is dying from some sort of terminal disease -- see the shot at 4:00 of all those pill bottles. So, since they both have only a little time left to live: on the grandma's suggestion, they both take this crazy joyride, doing all the transgressive violent things they've ever wanted to do, before going out with a bang. Yes, Madonna's character is also possibly fleeing the law (the multiple licenses) and some sort of abusive relationship (see the bruise at 3:53) but I feel like that's more about telling you what sort of person she is -- how she's been made into a victim and a target by her relationship and the law. So, for her, the joyride is also a last, wild grab at feeling powerful again before going out in a bang. As for the shin guards and bulletproof vest: I feel like those are there mostly to let us know that they did plan this ahead of time, and they BOTH knew what was planned to happen that night -- the grandma as well as Madonna. Obviously they're not going to survive that crash. But also, putting on "armor" before getting into a car that you will ride to your death can feel like getting dressed for battle, in an invigorating and powerful way. So, you could understand the armor as meaning something symbolic to Madonna and the grandma, even if it won't literally protect them.

@@ricardocabrera8344 The certain part quoted in the song is taken from Charlotte Gainsbourg's mouth -whose voice sounds a lot like Madonna's British accent, so it is relatively easy not to distinguish them (refering to the first comment)- from the film "The cement garden" , which is based on the homonymous book. I will always love Madonna. This video has so many meanings. As women we always have to try harder. To come off as strong or intimidating? Too Hard or in between? SHORT OR LONG?
