It’s hard to grasp how Iconic this film is on so many levels. On an artistic level blond ambition is still the blueprint for a modern tour! But also the documentary in its self was pretty groundbreaking in many ways. It predated much of what we now know as reality TV. Not to mention how bold and uncompromising she was in showing her gay dancers being openly who they are! It was the first time a lot of people ever saw two guys kissing. It let a lot of gay kids back then know they weren’t alone and that there was a life for them somewhere in this world. We often throw around the word Iconic very easily nowadays, but this film is the embodiment of the word. It’s impact and legacy still remains to this day and changed the landscape of the pop industry for the better! Incredible reaction, your face at the end of the film really warmed my heart! Can definitely see how touched you were by the film and that will mean a lot to many of us that have a deep appreciation for this incredible woman.

The thing is modern pop stars don’t have the type of music to carry the intense parts of Blonde Ambition. Nobody is that forthcoming or intriguing or open. I love Janet but even she doesn’t dig as deep. Lady Gaga is certainly a gray performer but nope.

Growing up during, in my opinion the most productive era of Madonna 1989-1992, this documentary was such a high point. With Blond Ambition World Tour and this film I became obsessed with her. I think I’ve seen this doc about 25 times, and it never gets old. Like you said it gives you a glimpse of who she really is. And you just have this feeling you need to know more about her. If I remember correctly she said with this documentary she wanted to smash and break the illusion of stardom. But I think it did just the opposite, she became even bigger and more ’mystical’ and at the same more human. Such a great reaction once again and I am so glad you liked it!

I was 17 years old when I went to the cinema to watch it. I stayed there for three sessions and left just so moved. Seeing her confidence and also fragility plus her relationship with her band and dancers was so special. It is still a groundbreaking documentary and it has influenced so many others since. I’m glad you have enjoyed it. I still think if it a lot after all these years.

So at 15 years old as a gay teenager just figuring himself out living in the suburbs, I can’t tell you how important this film was. It was the first time I ever saw gay men kiss, the first time I ever saw gay men not being made fun of and ridiculed or being threatened with violence, the first time I ever saw gay men being celebrated in any way really. Having the biggest star in the world at the time showing us that she supported and befriended gay men at a time when most celebrities wouldn’t even mention the word, was really powerful. And I luv that she didn’t celebrate a heteronormative Will and Grace style of queerness but the real deal. And yeah I know the use of the word fag would sound grating through the ears of a younger generation but it was regular vernacular at the time. People used it to degrade us but we also used it ourselves without awareness that it was problematic. I’m sure in 30 years time some of the language used now will also be deemed problematic. Loved your reaction and I totally agree that I think even people who aren’t fans would find it difficult to walk away from this film without gaining some respect for what she accomplished.

This was the first ever "reality" anything. It started it all. So much has happened since then, like her plastic surgery, she apologized in concert to Kevin Costner when he came to one of her concerts decades later, and you MUST react to the documentary "Strike A Pose" which catches up with the dancers 35 years later after this tour. Gives you even more insight into what was happening at this time. Remember it was illegal at this time to enter the US if you were gay. Florida still had laws against gay sex. Was a completely different time.

Congratulations! You just witnessed history being made. Pop culture would never be the same after this documentary. The tag line was "Truth is the ultimate dare", and I think that pretty much describes Madonna. Now, you MUST react to 3 interviews about this documentary that will allow you to understand better: Good Morning America 1991 interview, Dinner With Madonna 1991 interview, 60 Minutes Australia 1991 interview. And also the 1990 Omnibus documentary which is fascinating. It seems like a lot but believe me, you NEED to see all that.

Wow, so unexpected to see a reaction to Truth or Dare! Loved all your commentary. its insane this was 31 years ago. So strange to interpret it whilst being more mature. Love that you're pointing out the contrasting aspects of the film. And yeah, so many sad and tender moments. I remember loving that the had the part with Promise To Try and her visiting her mother's grave. Her mother's death affected her so deeply, and was such a consistent thread throughout her career. So many memories rewatching this. First time I saw 2 men kiss in a film. oh, and that's Warren Beaty from the Dick Tracy movie. Was such a mismatch then, and seems even moreso now. Listening now to his "why would anyone do it if it's not on film" - he really sounds like the old guard of Hollywood. Whereas madonna was basically ushering in the new age of reality tv with this intimate look behind the scenes.

You have to remember a few things. Nile Rodgers said that the reason he wanted to work with Madonna on her sophomore album was because when he went to see her at a club performance he was blown away that she was on stage dancing with a couple of dancers. At that time mostly only black acts danced when performing. She changed that. No woman controlled every aspect of her career including being the executive producer of her albums until she did it. She was the first woman to have an album sell more 3 million copies, more than 5 million, more than 10 million, more than 15 million, more than 20 million copies and The Immaculate Collection at over 30 million copies sold is the highest selling greatest hits package for a solo artist. She was the first female artist to perform a stadium world concert tour and to also sell it out. She was the first act to sell out multiple nights at Wembley Stadium on the same tour, she has sold it out 12 times only Michael Jackson has sold out Wembley more than she. The Blond Ambition World Tour was the first time an artist combined theatre, dance, fashion with a rock show and now all pop tours do it. She was the first person to mention AIDS on US boardcast tv that wasn't a news anchor, when she came out no artist supported the lgbt community she always has and stood up for us in interviews shows video etc. Now every female singer claims to like gays and people call them the biggest icon but Madonna actually did it when it could have harmed her career. This movie was filmed as she reached the level of fame where she is famous to famous people. Only Michael Jackson, Princess Diana and Elizabeth II knew that level of fame besides her. Where everyone knew who she was and had an opinion of her, do you even know Madonna's name is title for the Blessed Virgin Mary? That's how famous she is she replaced the mother of Jesus for what the name means. She just wanted to document the rehearsal process but Alec talked her into the full documentary. And she then decided she wanted everyone to get a glimpse of the madness that was now her life. The use of the f slur was hers she wanted to show Ollie's homophobia and how misplaced it was. Critics and haters of hers ranted about the fact that she had out gay men being themselves and presenting it in a good light. Every interview from the era it's brought up and she calls out the homophobia. Being gay was only excepted in certain social circles at the time. The first state in the US to make it illegal to fire someone or not rent to them because they are a member of the LGBT community was California and that happened in 93 two years after the movie came out. In over half of the states at the time sodomy was still illegal. She wanted people to see us as people. No artist today could do this first because it's too raw and she doesn't always come off good but also none would have the nerve to do the political messaging as well

Fun fact: she’s pining for Antonio Banderas here who was married and unattainable, and Antonio later was her co-star of course in Evita. At the time of filming that movie he was then married to Melanie Griffith and Madonna was with her daughter’s father Carlos Leon. Groundbreaking documentary and as others have suggested when you get to it, be sure to watch the second tour documentary “I’m Going To Tell You a Secret” which followed the Reinvention Tour at a time where she was balancing life as a wife and mother and the life on the road with her dancers. Really nice evolution of her as a person but documented with the same honesty!

I live in South Africa and when this movie came out I bunked school on the Friday when it was released and spent that whole weekend at the movies. No food no sleep no nothin'. I was in a trance and enchanted. And this film was a benchmark in so many ways. The concept, the editing, the rawness, the honesty, the artistic integrity, the myth building. She was the first celebrity to do this and basically invented the concept of reality TV. She exposed so much of herself and by the end she felt like an even bigger mystery and enigma because of all the layers and complexity and humanity of this legendary documentary and it was a huge worldwide box office hit that cemented her reputation. Miramax Studios started their reign at Hollywood on the back of this film's enormous success. It was the most successful documentary ever released when it came out and it held that title for many years.. It was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and the ruckess the film and she caused there was a tsunami of press coverage and out of this world. Once again she led and the test followed. She set the benchmark. J

I think she just literally never had time for anything at this point in her career. This was making a special effort to actually see her in person. It obviously was a complex friendship. It sounds like Moira, a little older and maybe a bit wilder, took advantage of a young Madonna. Or maybe they were both very curious and wanted to experiment with various things at a young age. Madonna was driven and did everything she could to make a success out of herself and Moira went a different way. That’s life

Maybe COVID 19 has altered a lot of how people are with one another? Today, people seem so much more cold and awkward towards one another with their true emotions, as if everyone is a perv or a creep, yet want to be so positive and full of love etc. It’s interesting as a 49 year old how I can see in my lifetime how generations change towards each other.

With the exception of "Keep It Together" and "Oh Father" (which were from her most recent studio album), all of the songs they featured were HUGE hits, most of them #1's. So not sure which songs you wanted to see/hear? "Like a Prayer" in full I guess? Hearing "f*g" is a bit jarring now, and was at the time too, but that was pretty accepted by polite society back then. The NY pride parade was literally the only visibility that the LGBTQ community had at the time. This doc was a big step forward. It was the first time I'd seen openly queer people in the media, let alone KISSING!

For all the chickadees who came after her claiming they saved gay rights, they need to have several seats. M was the biggest star who legit had our backs publicly when the gay community was suffering during the AIDS epidemic. People weren’t just calling us f*gs, they were gleeful that our community was dying, saying we deserved it for being fornicators and sinners. The 80s were ultra conservative. The first big wave of right wing politics in the US, UK and Canada, with fucking Reagan, Thatcher and Mulroney. To be so bold as to say we deserved respect, we deserved to live and we were beautiful and talented… featuring our community openly in her art, music, tours and videos, she gave us some of the ONLY positive representations of queer life in mainstream culture. This wasn’t her exploiting our community or using it as a prop or marketing tool, because she had many close friends who were queer as she was working her way up in NYC, and several died of HIV and AIDS.

This documentary made me come out as gay and be proud of it! It was such an important documentary on so many levels. You have to see it placed in that time, also the parts that kind of 'shocked' you a bit, like the make up girl being raped. It was way before the #metoo movement, it shows how people just took things for granted. Glad we see it differently nowadays of course. Also Oliver, who showed some ignorance against gay people, but it just showed how a lot of people thought about it! He wasn't really homophobic, he just came from another background and it was his first experience with gay people and didn't know how to act. He later regretted it in an interesting documentary about the dancers now, a few years ago. I never thought he was homophobic, I actually liked him and thought he was cute. I met him at the premiere and he was so nice to me, he even bowed and thanked me for being such a fan, no kidding! A few years later I shaked Madonna's hand at the Madame X show, so it came full circle for me. I still can watch this documentary over and over again and feel almost the same as I did back then. The end brought me to tears and Madonna's power was just contagious. I was just 22 years old.

Hi, Ben. This documentary is so emotional to me because it was the pop moment of our generation before gay liberation, reality shows and social media. I remember my friends queuing on a movie theatre to watch the famous blow job on a bottle scene (when oral sex was still a taboo in many parts of the world), the Like a Virgin performance, but mostly for us in the gay community it was the first time we ever saw two men french kissing. It was the first time it realize I wasn’t alone in the world. Later in 2016, when I was already a correspondent in Hollywood, I interviewed three of these dancers and had my dream come true: I danced Vogue with them. I was 17 when this came out. I saw a few times. The audiences all screamed gross and slurs when the two dancers had a gay kiss. It was such a different time. There were no gay kisses on TV or the mainstream movies at that time. There was nothing. Saying Fag was common and it was considered ok. It's so hard to show people born in the last 20 some years how far the gay movement has come. I started going to gay bars at 19 and I was shocked seeing men kissing. I came out at 15 but I had never seen it. There was no place to see it. Some of the dancers did sue her after for outing them. Gabriel was one who sued her because his family didn't know. He died of AIDs shortly after this came out. Madonna washed her hands of all of them except Carlton and Nikki and Donna. Carlton was in her next tour. The dancers have done interviews and I want to say a sit down movie sort of documentary maybe 5 years ago.

Most reactors wouldn't go this far into her content. Props! I snuck into a theatre (I was too young) and watched this with a packed crowd! I was so exciting. Her as a superstar was different than the ones now... back then she was so mysterious... you would get glimpses of her in videos, interviews and movies, and it was so exciting. Posters and magazines were like portals to see this enigmatic goddess of confidence.

The song highlights are actually from the European leg of the tour, as she was wearing the ponytail during the Japanese and U.S leg. So when you were watching the Like a Virgin, masturbation scene it wasn’t actually from the Toronto night. There are videos on KZread from Toronto where she is being funny to the crowd about being arrested during various sections. It’s interesting to see your take on it too, 31yrs later. 💙

Ah... the first time where I saw two men kissing... like many other gay teenage boys of that era! 😂 A truly unique and insightful doco, and well shot too! Would love to see what you think of her David Letterman interview in 1994 where she swore multiple times and made it one of the funniest but most uncomfortable interviews I've seen. This was after all the crap she was getting from her Sex book and Erotica era 🤣

@@FindingMadonna Truth or Dare is entertaining and exactly what I would expect from a behind the scenes music tour documentary: media coverage, illness/throat problems, weather and soundcheck issues, dancer antics/drama, celebrity meet & greet, family & old friends dealing with the fame, talking heads about the price of superstardom. It became the formula. I'm Going To Tell You A Secret is a great sequel showing her character growth and spiritual reawakening in the aftermath of becoming a mom to two children. It's more interesting because you see Madonna struggle with wanting to be a good person and investigating what that means. The show is also great and you see the upgraded production value. I would've loved one for Confessions but she said what she needed to say between the two documentaries. These days, I'm Going To Tell You A Secret is harder to own for a reasonable price as the album and documentary are no longer available on iTunes. Thank goodness I have a physical copy.

@@taintedlife2618 Confessions is by far her most seamless, polished tour. Still the gold standard in Madonna shows. Blonde Ambition is arguably the most overrated. The set list starts strong, but the show dips during the weakest set following Dick Tracy and her vocals are inconsistent. Girlie Show is so refreshing. Madonna looks so happy, the set list is tighter, her vocals are better, her showmanship / acting is better, the production value is higher, there's a narrative through-line with the clown. Her brother did a great job with that tour. Erotica, Fever, Vogue, Deeper and Deeper, Like a Virgin, La Isla Bonita, I'm Going Bananas, Justify My Love, and Holiday are standouts from Girlie Show.

People didnt exactly get a good impression of Madonna in this documentary, she was, and still is, quite immature and unfriendly towards people. Shes was known from early on, as someone who could step on people on the way up. Its obvious that Madonna hasnt have room for her childhood friend in her life as a famous person. She behaves in an awkward way, theres a famous scene with Kevin Costner in the movie which people talked a lot about when the movie came out.

Great review! I was 15 when this documentary came out and back then there was nothing like this on tv, as “reality tv” was only just starting with this. And also there was almost no gay representation on tv back then so as a gay teenager growing up in the Netherlands, this film shocked me in many ways, but I found it truly great, especially seeing those dancers and how free they were, made such an impact on me. In 2016 a Dutch team made a follow-up documentary about the dancers on how this film changed their lives and how they are now. It’s called “Strike a Pose” and really worth to watch if you’re interested. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strike_a_Pose
