In later parts especially the final one i think Madonna grew to like her and got that Heike wasn't out to get her but genuinely interested in her and also pretty well informed and familiar with her body of work. Heike is a Madonna fan afterall.

My favourite Madonna interview. Range of emotions from ice cold to defensive to warm to revealing very personal details that she usually does not give away so easily, that looks like as a thank-you gesture to Heike for being goofy, trying to cheer her up, and at the same time doing an excellent job as an interviewer.

Heike became a star in her own right she is good singer and a brilliant actress.

"That is what it is, it is the sound of my voice and the emotions in my voice" =🎯💯 so true. That is exactly how her voice is. She has this incredibly beautiful storytelling voice. Combine that with her insights into human existence and into herself then you get Madonna. She, her voice in particular is absolutely brilliant. She has a gorgeous speaking voice too. As gorgeous as her face and her eyes.

I like this video very much because of Heike Makatsch. She's so sweet, and she never wavered when Madonna was rather cold in the interview. Heike remained her sweet self. She's a wonderful actress in her own right ... for example, in "Aimee & Jaguar" and "Love Actually," as well as her interviews. She's lovely.

I like the Interviewer Heike..she knows how to extract things from Madonna..who confessed that the pain influences her to be more creative with the writing of songs. Great job.💞

She was 24 back then and Madonna was probably the biggest star she ever interviewed.

What I respect about Madonna is the fact that she responds in a very honest way, she could have written a whole book of lies about themerging into European music when actually what DID happened was that those collaborations emerged only because of her working with Nellee Hooper. She's frank about it and doesn't make an entanglement about it.

Thats actually a reaally incisive and insightful interviewer, really .. She really dug very personal questions from Madonna when the superstar is kind of economical with her answers .. but the interviewer did lead her to pretty in depth answers with constant prodding and walking on the edge between annoying Madge and culling the details out .. and eventually loosening up and making Madonna laugh at the some point later ..

She was very patient with the obvious nervous and awkward interviewer. I love her interviews whether she's being goofy or more demure and reserved. She's intelligent in het responses and sometimes refreshingly candid for someone who is has very much been aware of the power of image. She doesn't take herself seriously as a celebrity. She takes herself very seriously as an Artist and a business woman. Her tenacity to go for exactly what she wants is admirable.

I think that the interviewer is really good and it's rare to see a Madonna interview where they talk about her music!

What happened after 1999? Did she meet Guy Ritchie and she changed? I think if someone is so mean there must be a deeply rooted reason for it. In Madonna's case it was probably the loss of her mother and the fact she had to grow up without her.

When Heike ask about having her heart broken is the essence of humanity at that moment you literally see the vulnerability. What was said about people deriving pleasure from trying to knock her down is So True with our society.

I love Madonna her and Dave Mustaine from Megadeth are hell to be around I love both I'm also pretty narcissistic just like them

On the contrary, i think she is very intellectual. I think she is very nervous because she is possibly a big fan of hers. However Madonna isnt a Lady and doesnt make anyone feel at ease. I think she thrives on people being uncomfortable to ease her own insecurities.

She may be a "big fan,"and I'd be nervous too, if I was presented with someone who is aloof and behaves as if she is bored, irritated and doesn't really want to be there. Madonna was a tough interview, and in my opinion, there is no excuse for rudeness and disrespect of another human being. I don't care who you are!

Yes, Heike has always been a huge Madonna fan. She's said it several times when she worked at VIva that was her favorite artist and always requested her videos, that's also why is she is so familiar with Madonna's body of work. I think she did okay, being 23 at the time and doing this not in her mother tongue German but in English.

Why does it matter that english is not her first language if she speaks it almost perfectly? Your statement would've been ok if she was struggling to speak english but still pulled the interview to turn out well.

I knew Heike from her days as an exchange student in New Mexico(she was my brother's first girlfriend) and then met up with her in 1994 in Germany when she was working for Viva. She never changed with fame as far as I saw. Very cool always. Our waitress recognized her and Heike was very sweet and low key. Watching this I see Heike just as she is, sweet, honest and asking really decent questions. Some see it as annoying but it's just being honest and maybe somewhat uncomfortable because she asking quite probing questions(German mentality). That plus the interviewee is a pompous woman. I'm not really even sure Heike is a fan. We were into punk and new wave but this was her job.

I am sick of some of you idiots criticizing the interviewer. Her English was not perfect, and she was nervous interviewing the most famous woman in the world. I enjoyed her and she held her own just fine. Madonna was in a mood anyway, and if you watch until the end, Madonna validates her and the interview and it was adorable. Plus, Madonna has never been as beautiful as she was here.

I agree with you. Madonna said herself that she hates when interviewers ask the same questions over and over again. Although I admire this interviewer's spunk for not reacting to Madonna's aloof nature.

I've seen this before with other interviewers whose first language is not English - Madonna gets testy if their sentence structure or way of asking things doesn't work for her. In this case, the German woman is asking yes/no questions, sometimes putting words in her mouth or saying, "I heard that you" or "I read that you"..... and you can see M cringe. She's a tough cookie and I'd dance with her but wouldn't want to interview her.

You are right. The interviewer was too nervous and was doing a bad job asking the questions. She was mincing words and having a hard time trying to say what she meant, and she sounded like she was trying to have the answer before giving Madonna a chance to speak.

Okay the 90s were totally an improvement in pop music. Even the queen recognizes to be a fan pf Björk and Massive Attack...but know she says she is a fan of Nicki Minaj and LMFAO. I miss those times.

i think she's just not a fan of people pleasing girls and doesnt change her behavior to match with them, thats why this contrast exists and she seems very cold here. i think she doesn't want to change for people to feel more comfortable. tbh i admire her. also 6:57 is such a cute moment.. you can tell shes not actually mean, she's just a no-BS-person. you can tell she probably also must have thought the interviewer was cute

everybody in the comments is making up a huge drama regarding this interview. In my opinion this is often a projection of ones personality, insecurities etc or prejudice.. This was an interview, made by a talented but young/inexperienced pop/TV journalist with a great Artist, one Pop 'Godess', a legend if you like. And this went the way it should considering the above circumstances.. nothing special. I enjoyed it very much 😍 It provided a nice/valuable flashback into the good old 20th century.

It doesn't matter how lame the questions were, a true popstart/queen always stay polide...

Now Heike Makatsch is a superstar in germany!

You can't compare these interviews. Heike was late 30s in the interview you linked, a grown up, mature and confident lady 14 years after the Madonna interview, where she was just 24 and a lil baby in the biz but already interviewing big world stars. Heike deserves way more credit. I bet most of you people would shit your pants if you'd have to interview the biggest female pop star you're probably also fans of. Besides, Viva was very restrictive of what kinda questions she can ask since it was a music channel aimed mostly at teens. Heike herself said years later that it was her first big interview and that she's embarrassed about it all the years later. And to be fair, Madonna was quite bitchy here, making it harder for her than it already was.

I admire this interviewer, as I feel so uncomfortable for her. I think if I had Madonna's fame, I would feel SO much gratitude to be in her position, but during the height of her fame, she seemed so aloof, and irritated. Geez, you are famous because audiences embraced you, and bought your music!

On VIVA, those were the times: Videojockeys (Talkmaster) were all young......(Raab,Shirin, MinhKhai, Daisy Dee, Enie, Mola,Alex Bechtel....)..Ohhhhh....Makatsch was so great... I was a big fan of her... And the best of all was Stefan Raab....

I like Madonna.

I love how she's so vague about working with Björk. Björk deserves a lot more credit.

Yes an interviewer may not click with the interviewee for whatever reasons annoying etc but either the interviewer should get the picture and somehow turn the interview to another direction or cut it short and if not the interviewee should cut it short because in the end if not both parties waste each other's time and don't deliver decent content. hmm well first of all, this was a big deal for Heike and for her channel Viva at the time. They flew her from Germany to the US and actually got an hour and devoted a whole day to this. They made a Madonna day and the interview was the highlight. It was a young channel whose audience was mainly teeangers and people in their early 20s so naturally the people working and hosting there like Heike weren't 45 year olds with decades of experience but relatable vjs in their early 20s. Afterall Madonna is a popstar not a politician. Heike's english wasn't perfect but certainly good enough and she's informed, interested and friendly. I actually think with most other guests, she would have done just fine. It was Madonna's attitude for the most part that made this difficult but you don't cut an interview short after flying in from Europe and knowing your channel commits a whole day to this.

Sure it can be a big deal for anyone and they could devote an entire day, week, month, year, whatever even fly around the world but if it doesn't work perhaps there needs to be a quick change in the direction of the interview otherwise it doesn't make for good tv.

​@@f_t_re_f_rever Well in Part 4, it seems like she cracked her a little. We got a few little smiles from Madonna and she seemed a little more relaxed so i'm glad they didn't cut it short. It was still interesting to watch with some interesting questions and answers, not all of them but some.

I'm impressed. At the beginning I cringed and thought what an awful, overly nervous interviewer, until I realized that she totally persued her aims, shrouding herself in an innocent and seemingly obsequious attitude, reassuring smiles and using compliments, so she didn't appear bold and pushing. She made her talk incl. about intimate stuff, even though Madonna displayed a totally reticent and rather dismissive attitude right from the beginning. Good job, I'd say...

I honestly dont blame Madonna for being annoyed...

That poor interviewer, Madonna laid on the ice attitude in this one and the poor woman wanted the damn floor to eat her up.

It's Leo to Leo energy coming to play. Madonna and heike makatsch are both leonines on extreme and opposite dimensions. Madonna is clearly on the dark side here, arrogant to a fault and heike is very sunny and bubbly which is the standout trait of a leo. That's what it is, a Leo to Leo ego trip.

First of all,the interviewer was very very nervous & that's natural for a fan to react,but the questions she was asking was very wrong. They sound like telling madonna how the interviewer thinks than letting Madonna explain the true situation. That made Madonna pissed off....I myself find the questions irritating. Madonna was trying to be calm by knowing her she might just leave the set. I'm sure after that,Madonna will never wanna have another interview with her.
