What i like is that she never lied, every thing, every wish, every whim coincides with her current mind, she had biological children, adopted children, another marriage, she keeps doing music even tough she is not so commercial as she was before, she had her sisters, she still is vulnerable on her singing, etc...

Lost my mom when I was a small child, grew up without a mother basically... No other family around... This interview makes me cry every time. The way she's describing how she feels is exactly how I feel when I am in a crisis. Developed PTSD as a child as well (from several other circumstances) and now suffer from extreme anxiety and panic attacks. Every time I have anxiety all I want is for my mom to hold me... For anyone out there that lost their mom there is an incredible book called "Motherless Daughters" by Hope Edelman. I just burst out in tears when I first saw it in the book store... Great book! I strongly recommend it.

Madonna's pain about losing her mother is so obvious and it saddens me so much. I feel SOOO sorry for her. That empty yearning she suffers. Heartbreaking. I would think that Madonna doesn't want pity. But I admire her vulnerability and being rather raw in her emotions. I love you Madonna.

Yeah I agree. Especially her being a middle child. Being a middle child myself, I see us as the root of the family tree. You feel the pain of the family the deepest. My heart is my mom so I understand her pain. The narcissism she conveys comes from the loneliness of feeling safe and loved.

This is one of her most shockingly truthful interviews to date (and somehow even Forrest Sawyer didn't remind her of that infamous Nightline interview they did in 1990). And here's the thing: Anytime Madonna talks about her Mom, she changes expression and tone almost instantaneously. You can practically see her "veneer" of the strong, powerful woman/artist slowly come down like one of those theater curtains. For years, decades, in numerous interviews, the subject of her Mom's death, her feeling of abandonment, and the steps she had to take growing up and compensating for her absence in the only way she knows how, has always been a difficult, bittersweet and often sad subject for her to talk about. This Nightline interview is probably the best example of that, and it's quite a stunning thing to watch. It's rare to see Madonna be this "real."

It seems she was at her most open, honest and vulnerable here. That says something about Forrest as well. He put her at ease so she could open up instead of attacking her like some interviewers do, male and female. BTW 9:25 - so touching. As much as we can empathize that not having a parent with you is difficult (I lost my father, not exact same, but similar), that simple expression says more than words ever could. And this was clearly a point in her life where one truly relays on a mother, if present; when you are going through difficult times and when you want to start having children. Which was both for her at this point.

All the usual questions put to a woman at that time. Whilst it was enlightening to discover Madonna's vulnerability front and centre (rather than alluded to through her wonderful music), I think what business is it of mine? Am I groomed to know about men's business? No. The same should apply to women. I am happy with just the music. I don't need to know every detail about Madonna's life, none of it, really (though I'm happy about her children). It would have been great if people could have asked her about her art in the context of art, rather than the never-ending "controversies". I would like to know more about her philosophies, concepts and design choices.

Bro 09:18 had me crying 💔 I've seen a lot of interviews of her, and I've never seen her so emotionally open in one. I was surprised. Great interview.

Keep in mind that many people have mothers who are alive who they also can not call because their mothers are not nurturing nor emotionally supportive.

It is wild to me how this Madonna is light years wiser than todays Madonna. At times I do not relate to her current endeavors and I find all these footage more “her” if that makes sense.

And I remember this interview being so talked about because she made the joke about putting an ad in the Village Voice, and Diane Sawyer playfully mentions it at the end. After this, people were literally saying “Madonna is going to put an ad out for the father of her child!” I don’t know how she dealt with such scrutiny. Money helps I’m sure, but people really gave her grief about that comment.

This was filmed in her living room at Harperley Hall, NYC. She's done a lot of interviews there, including a few with Cynthia McFadden. And she's talking about her sister Melanie (Henry) whom she's probably still most close to. Oh and Melanie looks like what Madonna would likely look like now, had she not had as much work done.
