Chris Noneyabiz I disagree! Interviews weren’t much different then as now. That’s just a terrible interviewer. You never stay on the same subject long unless it’s very revealing or interesting to the viewers. A dress rarely is. Also if the interviewee is uncomfortable with the subject, the interviewer should get off it.

By then she had already gone through a few of them and it’s interesting to hear from Madonna herself how she felt like a Madonna imitator so she went in a completely different direction for her third album. Back then singers wouldn’t change their look from one album to the next but this wasn’t just anybody this was Madonna. Always a trend setter

I was 11-years-old in 1987 and got up early before school to see this on the Today Show. This was the first glimpse I saw of Madonna's off-stage persona. She was still a mystery to many of us at this point in her career. This is her at her peak of fame. As she says in this interview, "You are arguably the biggest star in the world today...."

@@sashabertold3731 I think what he meant was this was the peak of her "Sean years/True Blue era". She married him right after the Virgin Tour. So this was the peak of her "True Blue" era as culminated with the Who's That Girl Tour. As a bit of useless info-- the original working title of "Who's That Girl" was "Slammer".. but with Sean Penn's run-ins with the law and his breaking parole, it looked like he would go to jail or as one reporter called it "the slammer".. and since James Foley (the director) was best friends with Sean and Madonna, they felt that the working title might just carry with it some bad association and had to change the title. The title did come from exchanges with Griffin Dunn, who would ask "Who IS that girl??" And that's how the title was changed.. :)

Nice?! Classy?! What interview were you watching? For the first ten or fifteen minutes Jane acts "nice" but only in a very transparent attempt to get Madonna to warm to her. Then she starts laying out a series of traps for Madonna and becomes increasingly frustrated as the interview progresses with the realization that Madonna is not falling for any of it. Towards the end of the interview Jane is at times rude, desperate, irrational and even slightly delusional. She almost appears mentally unwell. It's actually quite uncomfortable to watch Jane's maneuvers and tactics throughout this interview. She grossly misjudged Madonna by thinking she would be an easy person to manipulate. Madonna is uncharacteristically patient to calmly sit through such a ridiculous series of questions, backhanded comments and thinly veiled accusations. But she outsmarts Jane at every step, and really Madonna is the only thing that makes this interview worth watching. I have to laugh when Jane says "well, you're lucky!" towards the end, sounding defeated and barely even attempting to contain her jealousy and envy. It's like a scene straight out of Dynasty! lol. Only in the 80's!!

Not sure why everyone is being overly negative on the interviewer - female interviewers had to be tougher than their male counterparts in those days. Madonna is being very open and chatty with her and certainly didn't need to do any interview she didn't choose to. Jane knows the subject well and asks some great questions. I adore Madonna and have seen so many interviews and this one is great because I do think both are being honest, beyond both of their expectations. It is so hard to find interviews with Madonna where the topic revolves around her music, they so seldom focus on the music. They mostly ramble on about fashion and romantic life and whatever.....hardly ever about the MUSIC. I remember a Rolling Stone article once that was about 7 or 8 pages long, and not once in the article does it EVER mention that she is a recording artist, no discussion about her music.....not one word about it. One of the biggest music stars ever, and it was never talked about in a rather long story, just lots of discussion about whom she had dated, or her ever changing fashion style, or politico leanings. If you did not know anything at all about Madonna, the article would not let you know anything about her being a huge pop star.

Seriously, this Jane Pauley person must have been known as a "good interviewer" back then. I mean, I assume she must have been regarded as one of the better interviewers back then which is crazy!. Imagine what a crappy interviewer was in the 80's if this woman was reputable. All that aside, I love this interview from a historic perspective because some people don't realize what a huge cultural impact Madonna made from the very start of her career. She was was the originator of so many trends, not just in music but in fashion, social advocacy, art, - the list goes on and on. It's crazy how influential and how innovative she is. Why, allegedly, would the discerning public that do not idol worship, ever believe an obnoxious lying, narcissistic, mediocre talented, helliweird, satanick masonick, entertainment industry created, wombless gender inverted male, controlled opposition shill, deceiver sellout, ACTOR, Man donner, who has, for decades, been deliberately mocking, gaslighting, misleading and distracting the good public by masquerading as a female entertainer , ACTOR, and more laughably, as a mother claiming to have given natural child birth, while parading around with a strap-on prosthetic, pregnancy, moon belly bump, trannyesque makeup and heels and utilizing paid helliweird breeder surrogates, allegedly?
