Madness - Shut Up Reaction

In this video we're listening to yet another song from Madness. We're pretty sure we're going to run out of Madness songs to listen to very soon. We just can't get enough of this nutty band, and their music. We're really excited to check this one out, for sure! Enjoy!

Apart from one of the only extended guitar solos on a Madness song, the album version has an extended piano outro that is faded on the 7" version.

Chris Foreman's guitar had "Super Yob" on it. Famously, previously owned and played by Dave Hill of Slade fame.

Feargal Sharkey (The Undertones) had a song called 'Listen To Your Father' in 1984. Chas (Madness) wrote it and all the Madness gang (except Suggs) performed on it 😊

A lot of us young Aussies had based our impression of England on what we saw in Madness videos. Slap-stick behaviour of bobbies and robbers, dodgy car salesmen and nutty boys on every street. There was not a Saturday morning that went by in the early 80's where you wouldn't see a Madness video. If The Specials had been bigger in Australia, our impression may have been different 😂

😆you’ve got that dead right Gillian . British police 40 odd years later ARE like that , taking the knee at BLM marches , joining in with Pride activities and generally being consciously aware of their PR - back in the 70’s n 80’s however …! We had the menace of the SPG , the special patrol group , a branch of the police who if you were a young Black person or in any way seen as a troublemaker , you really FEARED coming into contact with . They smashed you with fists , boots n batons and asked questions later and were quite happy to bend rules and fake evidence like the best South American dictatorship police forces . After one too many deaths in custody of young Black men( Clarence Baker was one , mentioned in the Ruts song Jah Wars ) they were eventually wound up in the 80’s when the public outcry became too loud - so yeah 😅WE wish the British coppers WERE like the ones portrayed here back then too ✊ 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering I wasn't aware of the brutality of the British police, but I didn't get the impression that it was a cartoon Bobbie country either. We have a station in Melbourne called 3RRR, and I remember hearing particular tracks on that station by The Specials and Tom Robinson Band, which gave me clues that it wasn't all slapstick over in England. But for very young and naive Australians (mostly teenagers), we would imagine England being like what we saw on The Young Ones and in those Madness videos. Even Ian Dury and The Blockheads had us believing that British blokes either looked like them or Gary Numan. 😆 It's nice to know the British coppers have changed over the years. At least, I hope they have...

@@liveitup67 there is a hysterical comedy sketch Gillian , I’ve seen it on KZread and I’ve never forgotten it from when it was first shown around 1980 / 81 from Its NOT the 9 o’ clock news . It’s Rowan Atkinson and Griff Rhys Jones called Constable Savage which underlines everything I said there about bent and violent cops from those days and it involves the SPG that I mentioned earlier . Speaking of The Young Ones and the SPG .. Vivian had a hamster in the series and he called it SPG , dunno if you recall that . 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering I just watched the Racist Police skit. I forgot that the hamster's name was SPG. There's probably a multitude of references on The Young Ones that would have gone over my head at the time. I just remember being amazed when I first saw it on TV. It was just refrreshing at the time. I couldn't take my eyes off the show. I also liked an Aussie alternative comedy show called ''Australia.. You're Standing In It''. I wouldn't recommend any of the skits, as they're so dated and probably too Australia. However, they did do a skit on Toyah which all us Countdown kids appreciated. ''Brainspace pays homage to Toyah Wilcox - Australia You're Standing In It'' There was also a political-satirical show called ''The Gillies Report'', and guess who had the honour being called ''Gillies'' and ''The Gillies Report'' during the time the show was on TV? It got a little dull after a while..

And on comment of the Racist Police, I really am amazed that people of colour would be treated so poorly at the time. Shows what I know.

Great piano by Mike Barson. Did You guys ever hear Cathal Smyth?. Also known as Chas Smash in Madness. The hype man and back up singer. He left Madness in 2014 to do his own songs. Check out You're Not Alone. Great voice. There's a little David Bowie over the style of the song. Another great Madness song are Land Of Hope And Glory. Either the album version or the live version from Madstock, Finsbury Park

Love some Madness. Got to see them live a few times whenever they visited Australia, etc, etc. The James Freud song from yesterday was alright, but can The Stems get a looking with ''Tears me In two''? Anitpodes and nzoz1985 seem to have pretty decent videos that might meet your quality standards. Thnx
