Made of pollution: How CO2 is recycled to make your things

Some companies are trying to make a carbon difference by manufacturing products made out of pollution. But is it really helping? What’s behind the fancy technology, and how does this bode for the planet’s-and consumer’s-future?
We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

    Not bad but what about the sand removing that makes thirsty cement so water runs through it not over like roads and sidewalks. So it help replenish groundwater and ground aquifers and prevent homes from sinking in when the ground starts drying on a wet climate now its a dry one why not help the earth out.

    CO2 is NOT A POLLUTANT. You can call CO2 an emission, but it NOT a pollutant, it's the BASIS FOR LIFE on earth. Plant life requires C02, the more the better, and we can't live without plant life. Calling CO2 a pollutant is INSANE.

    Carbon capture sounds like a good idea but I worry it will just give corporations a get out of jail free card to continue emitting CO2. Addressing the problem at the source is always going to be better than mitigation

    The best way to do this would be to make a carbon tax and to make sure putting CO2 in the air cost several times more than talking it out... (Addition) Actually one way is to reimburse the capture and make the cost of that the base line for said tax. By using the price to capture a ton of CO2 and then multiple it for the release of said ton.

    If CC gets so efficient that companies pumping CO2 in to the air actually become Carbon Negative, will it really matter? IMO, we need to sequester a lot more than simply what we're emitting today.

Are just a few, and i do not think that will be part of a serious discussion in the actual stage of homo sapiens evolution, they will never be adressed untill we evolve to the level of human beings. @Penny Farsely actually we can already capture more carbon for a given unit of area than any common crop even if the carbon capture system is powered by solar panels. It is just much more cost effective to have never emmited the CO2 in the first place. Plants are great, but they are very inefficient at medium or long term carbon capture and won't be enough on their own to completely avoid many of the negative effects of climate change even if we stopped emmiting more CO2 by the end of the year.

  • @garethbaus5471

    @garethbaus5471

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Penny Farsely I wasn't talking about dry ice production, I was talking abound the actual carbon capture techniques used to pull it out of the air. Such techniques are sometimes combined with underground storage. Certain rocks such as basalt can actually bond to CO2 if you expose enough surface area which can be a cheap way to store carbon for at least the next couple melinia.

  • @garethbaus5471

    @garethbaus5471

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Penny Farsely you do realize that drills exist right? We don't need to mine basalt for carbon storage, nor do we need to super cool it. And as I tried to imply in my original comment until we have a primarily low emmision grid it isn't worth the effort, but that still doesn't mean we can't outperform plants at carbon capture and storage.

    The easiest way would be a tax on carbon emmisions at the source taxing every fossil fuel based on the average amount of damage a given quantity of said fuel is likely to produce at the point of extraction. The money could be used in a disaster relief fund, and or used to subsidize low emmisions products and energy. And one you have set up this carrot and stick approach you can watch capitalism at its best adjusting the market to better match the embedded costs if you weight the taxes and subsidies correctly we could get the most prosperous economy feasible for the lowest environmental cost(completely eleminating climate change isn't quite worth the effort at this point, but there is definitely a happy medium where you get the least damage for the least cost for the highest net value in the end).

Whilst they are connected, they are still separate technical problems and the latter is easily overshadowed by the former. Also our total release of sf6 is low enough that it still has negligible warming potential compared to our current CO2 and methane release rates so it still isn't the priority simply because it is an easy to trap gas that is somewhat expensive to manufacture, used in equipment that you want to run as long as possible before it needs maintenance. Plus I don't know where you are getting this data about thriving corals, but bleaching rates have quadrupled since the 80s and I can't find any object metric that shows a a positive or even neutral trend on the global scale when it comes to coral.

As the poor already struggle to pay for themselves we need the government to think far ahead innl the future to make the decisions today to protect the less affluent from the climate change tax which more people than youd expect cant afford or even if they could afford it, wouldnt want too

    The catalyst, as previously mentioned in the short documentary, is cheep "green" energy, which is the crux of this problem... Let the market handle green energy and the process is too slow not allowing the price of electricity drop low enough to allow these novel technologies to compete with previous tech. We need to force massive quantities of green energy into existance to give these novel technologies the chance to thrive... and only the government and a mayority of forward thinking voters can enforce such a change into this

    Co2 is not a pollutant and should not be regarded as such. This compound is essential to life and it is not a material driver of our climate at current concentrations. We are concentrating on eliminating, at a huge cost, something that does not now affect our climate. It is a greenhouse gas but a minor one and it is now saturated so cannot possibly change our climate nor can reducing emissions of CO2 change the way our climate is behaving. No one has provided any evidence that CO2 is altering our climate but rely on the weak 'what else can it be'? Well the answer to that is what else altered climate before man used fossil fuels. Climate varies and always has done albeit in a relatively narrow margin of temperature variation. The worst times for living creatures were during ice ages while warm periods increased life.

Your other argument states that warming will continue until the entire planet looks like the Sahara. There is no evidence for either. The Sahara is not created by heat, it's created by lack of rainfall. Warming doesn't cause desertification. I guess Greenland teeming with forests and wildlife is somehow apocalyptic too? When the earth was experiencing record high temps and Co2 levels the largest herbivores the planet has ever seen walked the earth. The planet was covered in tropical foliage all the way to the Arctic Circle. Fossils prove this. Anytime the earth has experienced warming life has flourished. This is also proven. Cooling is a far greater threat to life. You oppose the Sahara but you have no problem with Greenland and Antarctica remaining bastions of desolate frozen wasteland.
