Taiwan. After 23 years of living in America, I travel back to Taiwan, my childhood home to learn about its culture and traditions with new eyes. I retrace the steps of my childhood, visiting our local Taiwanese market, trying Taiwanese cuisine and street food like beef noodle soup, visit a Buddhist/Taoist temple, and eat our way through a Taiwanese night market in Taipei.

I was born in the US, but my heart is in Taiwan. I was lucky enough to grow up speaking Taiwanese, and visiting almost every year until high school. I've been back several times as well as an adult and I am so glad that the world is finally starting to appreciate our beautiful homeland.

In comparison to the Japanese and Koreans, Taiwanese are more relaxed. For an ordinary citizen, Taiwanese is less stressful in daily life and more friendly to foreigners in actual ---- to all foreigners, not merely the white people.

I'm thrilled to have come across your video - such an incredible documentary! It resonated deeply with me as I can relate. I moved from Taiwan to the U.S. at 12 in the summer of 1992. Returning after 12 years was surreal; my hometown, Taixi, in Yunlin county, had changed, yet some places remained familiar. Despite the wear and tear, I felt a profound sense of peace and belonging, even among unfamiliar faces. Now in my 40s, acclimated to U.S. lifestyle, every visit to Taiwan, especially in Taixi, my soul would always remind me that this is home. Thank you again for sharing.

(My 19 year old daughter is actually there visiting now.) I'm trying to talk my wife into moving to Taiwan in a few years when I retire. We''ll see how that goes.

What a touching vignette, Dottie. Thank you for sharing that. I got emotional watching it, as I'm also "M.I.T" but has spent the last 45 years of my life on Canada's West Coast (only visited Taiwan once 10 years ago), having left Taiwan when I was 9. And like you, I know there's a very deep part of me that really is Taiwanese/Chinese and that will always stay with me. I definitely feel the duality that is in me, part Taiwanese and part Canadian. I very much enjoy your videos and adventures, very glad to have discovered your channel. All the best to you in 2024!

I am Half Japanese and seeing your (& Lenza's) Vlog, reminds me a little bit of being born in Tokyo, Japan and the wonderful memories I kind of remember almost 59 years ago before moving to Okinawa then back to Japan then finally to the United States in 1974, as a kid whose father was in the U.S. Air Force. Thanks again Dottie and Lenza. Stay Save on your folks traveling journeys. My sincere condolences about your dear dad. 😪

Beef noodle soup is also my goto when I go to back once in a blue moon. AND NO SHOT tha that is the same primary school I went to! I totally get what you mean about the vibe. When I left Taiwan I was 5 and there were no MRT or anything like that. would've been like 20 odd years til I went back next and god it was so different yet at the same time super nostalgic. My gran lived in hualien and even though it did change there quite a bit it's still much less developed and definitely reminded me of "home". I don't know if you've ever felt the same way as me but for someone who's had a bit of a identity cultural crisis. Going back to Taiwan totally fixed that for me.

Very moving- glad I found your channel, not sure why you don’t have more subscribers, very high quality. I found connection to this vid and you because my mother was born and raised in the Philippines and married (age 32 at the time) my father (age 57 at the time) mail order bride style in order to get to the US. She was the only one of her family that left so all my mother’s side is still over there. I was born in Portland and we would travel back to the Philippines every few years all my life. My father died at age 79 when I was 21 in ‘03 so seeing the dedication to your father at the end made me emotional. I often wonder what my life would have been like if my mother would have never left her home country and I was raised over there like all my cousins that struggle daily and envy me and my life here in the US… thanks again and keep up your excellent work

Wonderful video! I left Taiwan 55 years ago, at the age of 12. I married a Taiwanese woman six years ago. I've been back every year for the past seven years. Here's something you might not appreciate, given your age. In 2020, I accompanied my in-laws on a Saturday to the local school to watch them cast their ballots for the presidential election. I became so emotional. Within a short time frame (from the perspective of political changes), Taiwan went from a dictatorship to a vibrant democracy. Long live Taiwan!
