I love John Lennon and Layne Staley, two of my favorite singers. They share a certain vulnerability in their voice, a common thread to all great singers. Layne was like a darker shade of John.

His voice was so clear on the Mad Season songs. Compare it to the last album he did with Alice where just about every song has voice distorted or buried under other such effects. He sounds so young here too. I know it's Kurt who usually gets the John Lennon comparison and maybe it's apt for how they were both looked to as the "voices of their generation" but to me, as a huge John Lennon fan, Layne is a lot closer to John it terms of vocals as both possessed the rare ability of being able to take all the pain and anger they lived with and project it through their vocals. They also both employed a "warts and all" approach in their lyrics where they laid themselves bare for the world to see. All their pain, insecurities, and struggles were expressed every time they recorded their music and that's a big reason why people still relate to their music and look up to them.

I would like to analyze what you wrote there. Alice In Chains are a very different band from Mad Season, sonically. The production has always been very different. Mad Season don't seem to have done much overdubs, not even on the vocals, but AIC has Layne and Jerry singing harmonies, and both of those guys' vocals have been overdubbed. So it's not strange that you feel that Layne's voice sounds clear in Mad Season. It was a different approach to recording. On Layne's last AIC album, there's distortion (let's call it "telephone effect") on Layne's vocals in the following songs, but only during the verse or overdubs in the verses, or only during the chorus: - Grind (only on overdubs) - Head Creeps (during verse; also, there seems to be some sort of sublte, almost detuning chorus effect on the vocals during the songs chorus) - Again (during chorus) - Heaven Beside You (during chorus; a bit of the "telephone effect" on Jerry's voice) The vocals are basically clean on the rest of the songs: - Brush Away (a lot of overdubs) - Sludge Factory (the vocals feel a bit "boxy"? I guess it's all about EQ and compression.) - Shame In You (pretty compressed and "boxy") - God Am - So Close - Nothin Song - Frogs (mostly clean vocals, except for the spoken part at the end) - Over Now Yeah, I guess the overall theme of the clean vocals on that album is that they're heavily compressed and a bit "boxy", for lack of a better word. The music is heavier and more "produced", with more overdubs. Compare it with Slipknot's Wait And Bleed. Overdubs make it so heavy. If it were just one vocal track, it would sound very thin, and the same goes for Alice In Chains. Mad Season is a different type of band, so having the vocals more bare fits much better. Take a listen to only the vocal track on Wait And Bleed. It's really good! And if you're a bit of a recording, production and studio nerd, you'll enjoy it. :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/omSilLOEhrTgfbQ.html&ab_channel=ToFlameALand And then listen to a compilation of Alice In Chains songs with only vocals. It's interesting how much overdubs they always had, and how much they used reverb as a creative too. Down In A Hole has pretty dry and bare vocals, though. It seems to be pretty unusual for AIC. On a side note, Layne actullay caughed a bit during the chorus of We Die Young. That raspy vocal wasn't easy even for him, it seems.

@@nedim_guitar GREAT analysis! You are spot on. Apples and oranges. Both fruits, both round, but very different from one another. AIC *was* the blending of those amazing harmonies, but its refreshing to hear Layne on his own so clearly! ❤🎤💔
