I'm SO glad Barrett shared this story on a video bc I read the memorandum that Barrett wrote for Layne's funeral service and he shares this exact story in the memorandum, verbatim! At the time I read this about Layne, I was a fan, but after reading that I absolutely fell in love with his heart. It's one of the many stories like this about Layne. Barrett goes on to say how humble, generous, sensitive, intuitive, with a pure heart. If u watch him in mad season vids, his countenance is opposite aic

.. both were loyal in every sense, both had a humility about them, both had a charisma that was so magnetic, both, were beaten down by journalists for their addiction (and it truly got to layne) and sadly, both had the same addiction issues. layne has my heart more than any artist tho bc in spite of all of the shit he endured, he maintained an innocence about him that was so pure. so many things made him beautiful in so many ways. and then there's that voice...indescribable perfection...

and as if his voice weren't enough on it's own, it was all that he delivered thru it. like a language of it's own. i still melt when he ends some of his verses with an "RRR", lol. it's just a layne thing. i first noticed it in river of deceit "my pain is self chosennnrrrr or "wake up, it's time to wake uprrrr" the way he sings in aic unplugged...u just know he means what he sings from his heart to gut back to his heart then to us. anyway, i'll stop before this turns into a novel.so missed/loved

Kurt Cobain and Layne were similar in a lot of ways from their writing to their hearts being so different from so many out there. They both would rather play for free to a crowd of fans who just dug their gifts vs. a paid concert for a crowd with all kinds of commercial promotions, etc. behind it. Both loved playing for small intimate crowds and loved interacting with their fans. and of course both died on an april 5th...coincidence? almost like an unspoken homage to one another

Nope, Mad Season was declared as being defunct shortly after the passing of Baker. I don't know that anybody was ''hired'' in the Mad Season assembly, it was just a close knit group of guys who liked to make make music. Why, what do you know about contracts that I don't?

I heard Kurt Cobain did something similar at the Trees club in Dallas to kids outside that couldn't get in since the place was sold out. He said to the ticket sales out front that weren't letting them in that they were "negligently treating his personal guest and to let them in immediately." Kurt later got cracked in the head by a bouncer at the same show.

I remember because on a Foo Fighters interview back in 98 on Howard Stern, a guy called in that was at that show and got let in by Kurt. Howard of course hung up on him before Dave could even ask him stuff. Jerk. It's also on youtube, I probably commented on that too, hahaha.

+Federico Moretti Mike is the guitarist of the band "Pearl Jam" and Barrett is the drummer of the band " Screaming Trees". They made together with Layne Staley ( singer from AIC ) and bassist John Baker Saunders from "The Walkabouts" an album called "Above" in 1995. Their band's name was "Mad Season", a "supergroupe" fromed by these 4 members of these 4 Seattle based bands. My english isn't so good too, I'm from Belgium but I think you'll understand me:-)! Above is a wonderful album, the only one they made. John Baker Saunders died from an overdose in januari 1999 and Layne in 2002...Mike McCready is still playing with his band, Pearl Jam ( he's a fantastic guitar player ) and Barrett Martin played (still plays) with alternative great bands like Screaming Trees, REM, Queen Of Stone Age, Stone Temple Pilots, Therapy?, etc...

I think I know the story... the PA sucked, so in Polly Kurt smashed it with his competition mustang (it's on youtube, look it up, I commented on it), the PA belonged to the bouncers friend so he was already pissed, and during Love Buzz Kurt jumped out in the crowd, and on the way back in, Kurt's strap button on his Jag cut open the bouncers head. Kurt got clocked, but 6'8 Krist jumped on him. They had to stop the show to keep the bouncer from killing Kurt. They finished a few minutes later.

The real tragedy of Seattle was not the suicide of Kurt Cobain nor was it the overdose of Layne Staley. The REAL tragedy of Seattle was that two days before Apple was released, Andrew Wood was found in his apartment unconscious due to a heroin overdose. Two days before Apple was released, family and friends decided it was time to take Andy off of life support. March 19th 1990. The day that music was changed forever and most people don't even know. RIP Andy! Here's to Stone and Jeff keeping that Mother Love Bone joy alive.

Why do you say Andy's death by overdose was the "real tragedy" and not Cobain's suicide or Layne's death by overdose? Why are Cobain's and Staley's deaths not every bit as tragic???

Kurt was vastly overrated. If it wasn't for Andy's death, Nirvana would've never blew up as big as they did. Instead of Nirvana being the poster band for Seattle, it would've been Mother Love Bone. And as for Layne, we had three awesome albums and two awesome EPs. Even though AiCs unplugged concert was awesome as well, you can tell that Layne was past his prime and was on his downhill stages of both his life and his vocal abilities. Drugs were not only taking a toll on his health, but his throat as well. That and the more I read about Layne as a person, the more respect I lose for him. The real tragedy is that we only have a handful of Malfunkshun songs and one lonely Mother Love Bone album from Andy. We got robbed of so much more. I would gladly give up all the Pearl Jam albums to have Andy alive and ten more Mother Love Bone albums instead. (Even though I personally believe that Mike McCready is a better guitar player than Bruce Fairweather.)

Kurt was vastly overrated? Based on what? He was a phenomenal songwriter. Andy's death made Nirvana big??? I love MLB but when Andy died they were an unknown band just like Nirvana, Screaming Trees and AIC. That had zero effect on Nirvana's success. Nirvana hit it big b/c "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a once-in-a-generation single. It was the big bang for all the Seattle bands. Pearl Jam benefitted from Nirvana's success. And PJ's popularity helped bring attention to MLB. MLB has not sold anywhere near what Nirvana, PJ, AIC or Soundgarden ever sold.

Phenomenal song-writer? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! "MLB has not sold anywhere near what Nirvana, PJ, AIC or Soundgarden ever sold." That's 'cause Andy died before they hit it big. If Andy would NOT have died, than Mother Love Bone would've been the poster band of Seattle instead of Nirvana. Look up something called "Mother Love Bone 90s Documentary" here on KZread. All the publicists in Washington, Oregon and California were already surrounding these guys as they were in the studio recording their first album. The documentary that was SUPPOSED to be about a band's rise to stardom became a documentary about a band that lost it all the day before they even had it. Stone Gossard is TEN TIMES the songwriter that Kurt ever dreamed of being. Kurt's structure was simplistic and unimaginative. His guitar riffs were the same. And his vocal abilities were definitely more than lacking. The REAL Godfather of Grunge is L'Andrew The Love Child. Andrew Wood.

ComaAlpha, is that why Kurt's songs are loved by scores of teenage kids today who weren't even born when he died - b/c of Andy's death?!?! Nirvana was wildly popular and seriously respected back in the early 90s as well as today because the songs are undeniably great. And why did Andy's death only help Nirvana but not Andy himself? Nirvana and MLB are waaay different. Nirvana didn't step into MLB's shoes, Nirvana had its own thing and it's own sound. I love MLB but quite honestly that weren't 'grunge' so much as they were glam. Andy loved Freddy Mercury and adopted a glam look and sound. Nirvana never went near that look or sound. Couldn't have been more opposite if that scene. And neither Eddie Vedder nor Stoney himself would agree with your assertion that Stone is a better songwriter than Kurt. You've just had your feelings hurt by Kurt because he ragged on Stone and Jeff back in the early 90s for being careerists. Stone and Jeff are over that slag-off so it may be time for you to get over it as well. Take care though.
