One of the innumerable things I love about this movie is how much personality even the nameless, essentially faceless random henchmen have. That one shotgun-carrying War Boy who tells Rictus to go easy on the flamethrower because he'll damage the boss's property, and then throws himself in front of Furiosa's bullets to save Immortan Joe. No name, six words of dialogue, and 10 seconds of screentime, but we know that he's clearly respected to ride enough on the Boss's car - and tell his musclebound ogre son to cool it- and devoted enough to lay his life down for his leader. That's almost an entire character arc. This movie is a masterpiece.

After watching so many other movies and games that include ruthless raiders who just kill each other over the smallest things, It's really refreshing that Immortan Joe actually listens to Nux's idea and (sorta) let's him follow through with it. In fact, he even hands him a gun and sprays him in the face with chrome to show he approved of his decision. Other raider leaders would likely put down an underling for speaking out of place, or execute them for thinking they were in charge. Or even kill them after they've failed, which Joe doesn't in response to Nux tripping and dropping the gun. But the fact that Nux could trust that the Boss wouldn't shoot him down shows that these henchmen aren't motivated by fear of execution, but by a genuine desire to follow their leader. It's as heartwarming as bloodthirsty, murderous marauders can get in post-apocalyptic fiction.

Agreed. Something else I love about that part is how Immortan Joe tells Nux to kill Furiosa instead of keeping her alive. I think that might actually help Nux realize he's on the wrong side later on, knowing that Joe would kill Furiosa despite how long she'd been an Imperator for him.

For those who said this film lacked story: Splendid being the favorite has Immortan Joe's symbols etched into the side of her face. She's also placed on a higher pedestal than the other wives, which makes her feel inadequate when she can't load the gun. She then uses the one thing she has over Joe to shield Furiosa and bring a temporary stop to this madness, his unborn child. The War boys are constantly hanging on the door that ultimately leads to Splendid's death. The chain that bounded Nux and Max is the very thing that stops Nux from completing his murderous task. This would be pages of dialogue in another director's hands, which makes Miller's visual storytelling even more impressive!

There's also the fact that Nux's obsession with winning Joe's favor inadvertently caused the complete and total collapse of his empire, with his insistence on bringing his "bloodbag" with him, not realizing that he was about to deliver the single most dangerous living thing on earth to his enemy. Had he not brought Max to Furiosa, I doubt she would have been able to even survive her disagreement with the Rock Riders just on her own. The chain that bound him to Max quite literally stopped his ambition in its tracks

No one seems to mention that Immortan Joe really isn't a villain though. The film constantly espouses feminist talking points about how its men that destroyed the world and are pretty much the cause of everything that is wrong and bad, which is why the patriarchy is overthrown and replaced with a matriarchy in the end. However, Immortan Joe was a dictator doing what he thought was right for his people in such a harsh climate. Everything he did was for a brighter future and to strengthen his group so they could live another day, with the foresight to create goods for trade, hydroponics systems to grow vegetables on a barren Earth, to create healthy heirs to lead their tribe into the future, really just about everything he is seen doing isn't for instant self-gratification but because he wanted to build, maintain, and protect a society even while he knew he was dying with his health failing as shown by his labored breathing and the cancers that afflict them all due to radiation.

Most of them couldn't even get their cup filled up and a lot of the water disappeared into the ground. They could have easily handed each person a cup or two or water bur instead just dumped it on top of them. Seemed like they wer just fucking with the people. And then of course he forcibly keeps a harem of women just to breed with, though he's the leader of a community in a post apocalyptic world and that behavior probably wouldn't be out of the ordinary in their world (or ours in the past). I know they were well taken care of but it was bad enough for them to risk escaping so you have to wonder what he did to them.

And considering it is set in a post-apocalyptic world, his iron fist rule was probably the best way to handle such a task. I'm sure if women were to take over it would just utterly fail (like we see so many times in our own society). Patriarchy > matriarchy

@@dangerdan2592 " Most of them couldn't even get their cup filled up and a lot of the water disappeared into the ground." The biggest loss would be to evaporation, the water "lost" to the ground isn't lost at all, it seeps back into the underground aquifer which was shown to be the source of their water. One could argue its the "publicity stunt" is the cost of maintaining order. If he gave away water freely to the people that aren't really even part of his tribe (these are outsider beggars not part of his clan) it would likely attract more and more and be unsustainable. From what we can see, his own people, his "boys" and the "milk ladies" and his wives and family seem to be very well fed and hydrated.

Pause at 0:33, when they shoot together, he with the pistol and she with the flare gun. Such perfect synchronicity. They both know exactly what they have to do and they do it. He shoots the glass and breaks it, allowing her shoot the flare at the biker. She waits a beat to let his shot break the glass before she shoots. They had incredible flow together, never once getting in each other’s way.

I love how at 0:36 the biker drops the dynamite. It reminds me of when in The Road Warrior the guy next to the Warrior Woman lights a bag on fire but then drops it and accidentally sets his hands on fire. Except in that one the guy was a good guy. It really shows how in the Mad Max universe the side you're on doesn't determine your luck at all. I love that.

Although there is amazing practical (stunt)work in Fury Road, almost every shot is enhanced with CGI: cars, people, explosions, debris and all kinds of stuff added that are either near misses or full-on impacts. The action in Fury Road wouldn't look nearly so impressive without CGI. And hey: that's great. Fury Road has a fantastic blend of different film making tools; each used in conjunction to their fullest potential.
