One of the best parts of this scene is how all the cuts between each shot are set up so your eyes are already where they need to be when the cut happens. You can most clearly see this with the bikers jumping over the war rig. Notice how your eye follows each biker, and when the scene cuts, you dont need to look around for the next bike; its already where your eyes are looking.

Lindsay Ellis did a wonderful breakdown of this, and why the shots flow so smoothly like you said. "Continuity of continuum of movement." Not like modern movies where they stop and have a dribbly chat to each other and all danger goes away for a few minutes.

No shake-y cam, no flailing wildly and any hysterical cheesy dialogue. Pure action and minimum CGI as much as possible. This movie is a masterpiece.

Actually a lot of CGI, just used effectively and planned out ahead of time, so no rushing to get it done and looking like crap.

You know this was made by someone with love and respect for vehicles. The war rig is just as much of a character as the people. Every gear change, every growl her V8s make and the part where the fire is put out - absolutely amazing. It's like the truck is a beast that takes a deep breath while in a fight. She gets air through the standard intakes, but at wide open throttle, the supercharger inlet is fully open, letting that 2000hp beast roar and give it all she's got! That right there is something every carguy will not only appreciate, but feel deeply. We know how much work goes into our prides of joy. This is one that lives a very harsh life in the wasteland and that deep breath transforms machine into living character.

The movie drew a lot of inspiration from Moby Dick - shockingly - and the War Rig is characterised as the great whale throughout the film. The gasping breaths of the supercharges. The inexorable power of it. The fact that that it is repeatedly attacked with harpoons. And when it eventually dies, the sound designers mixed actual whale noises into the audio...

To me, still the greatest action movie of the decade. It's so perfect it's art. A story that is simple but not stupid, memorable characters that are given depth with only the minimum amount of necessary dialogue and the actors' facial expressions doing most of the acting, perfect cinematography that makes every single shot count, amazing action that only relies on CGI when it's absolutely unavoidable and a great and memorable score that fits every scene perfectly.

i don't remember who but i watched a interview that rig is actually resembles Mobydick so when it crashed end of the movie, sound director distort whale and bear noises as a farewell. this movie is the definition of the art of cinema

Honestly I think the score is weakest part of the movie. Aside from some riffs and a few other sections, I think the score is mostly "generic hollywood music". Very well done generic hollywood music though.

@@zelkuta It's funny you say that because there has been a trend when it comes to music and scores for films (especially blockbusters) when it's easier to have a composer make music that is 'like' something else. 'Every Frame a Paining' did a video on this a while back about how Marvel movies don't really have memorable themes as far as scores go. There are 23 movies and maybe the Avengers theme is the only one that really stands out. This movie's composers where no different yet I just decide to make a comment about how this score actually does stand out and it's pretty good. The rest of the movie's music just blends into the background. It just enhances the moments and possibly could work with being there at all.

@@Ben-pd2bx You like what you like, and although I disagree with anybody that says the score of this film is weak in any way, I'd shrug more to zelkuta's comment more than this one. Silvestri is classic, no doubt, but is just that: classic, which translates to been there and done that. Tenet was a mess on so many levels, its soundtrack does exactly the opposite of what you described. Its pace is fast when calmness is on the screen (a juxtaposition that can work, it just doesn't in that film), there are few transitions on beat to the action on camera, and there are weak fades at awkward times as if the editor couldn't figure out how to better move on. Junkie XL actually uses the film in his songs, so much so that what you think is a sound effect in the movie may just be the musical mix taking over for that part of the movie, like water, the Doof, etc. "Water" has a constant hiss underlying the entire beginning of the track, mimicking the water flowing through the hose that Max is so desperate to drink from. When Furiosa charges him it breaks into drums and drums only for the entire fight, in rhythm to the dance they're performing through hand-to-hand combat. The pacing, the breaks, the staccato, all of it changes as the fight complicates with Nux and the wives. This song/scene, "Brothers in Arms", begins with the decelerating glitch sound as Furiosa has the "oh shit" moment that kicks off do-or-die for everyone involved. It moves to predictable drums as the rig picks up speed, it's weak when not moving. Strings enter the fray when the first biker slides to Furiosa's legs, they're played to wail a bit as they plummet in pitch, to induce a sense of panic. She kicks him free, the next beat is by a digital horn, it actually mimics a rig horn (like the water through the hose earlier), the beast is catching its stride. Max and Furiosa are in shit now though, the bikers are in pursuit and Joe is over the pass. The strings are back again, but this time they aren't wailing, the bows are crossing the strings in a confident manner, a trusting pace...there's a challenge but Max and Furiosa are jelling. The bikers obviously have a rhythm of their own though, this might be an even match? The first horn blare sounds as the first biker launches off his ramp, the second horn blare goes off as the bomb does on the rig, the third horn blare comes as the next bomb hits the rig, the fourth horn blare couples the next bomb going off as Furiosa shoots that rider off his bike! The horns and strings are now in unison, as are Max and Furiosa....eff, I'm stopping here...the whole movie is like this! Moving on -

The swelling music really works with the visuals.

3:34 The sound design is so fucking good in this film. When the sand is kicked up it sounds like the truck is holding it's breath, then the camera pans into the air vents opening and sounding like a human taking a huge huff of air, like the vehicle is alive in it's own right. 10/10 movie.

this is my favorite scene in the whole movie. it's just poetry. barely a word spoken but you can see how furiosa and max gradually become allies. it's visually communicated in the way they at first fight their own battles, then start covering each other's blind spots, and then eventually move in perfect synchrony.

My favorite part about this scene is that up until now, Max and Furiosa were at odds. But the moment an outside threat appears, they don't hesitate to work together. And they fight so perfectly in sync without even saying a word

The trust is subtly built up untill that point. First, during fist fight , Max wins and doesnt shoot her - instead, he gives 3 warning shots, and Furiosa instantly realizes he is not a scumbag completely. Then, he doesnt say his name, but turns the pistol on safety, after fleeing here he hands her a gun.

@@CATDHDI love Max’s arc where he turns from a feral animal back to a human with a mission. He starts frantic and grunting and becomes methodical and articulate. Like going from a starving beast to a honed soldier.

This is probably my favorite scene in the movie - it's the first time Furiosa and Max actually work together. The chemistry, the sound, the music, the explosions....perfect.

The most perfect film. This is how movies should be made

I still get chills watching the War Rig take a DEEP breath of air after the fires are out. I loved how every machine in this movie felt alive, an extension of the driver and carried the fury and fire of their souls.

It's crazy how they instantly became a machine. They both knew what to do.

I really love the shot at 3:26, her pregnant belly with the bullet shells falling on it. It's symbolic of their struggle to survive and preserve life in the wasteland, versus all of the death and carnage that's chasing them. So good!

The war rig catching on fire was just such a hype moment in theaters. I was watching it and thought "If they're smart, they'll lower the dozer blade and let the sand extinguish the fire." And then they did! Normally I don't clap in theatres, this was an exception.

I love how they balanced Furiosa and Max without one overshadowing the other.

One of the best action scenes in cinema history. Period

2:12 on there is no dialogue, great decision here. And i love how the music goes from threatening suspense to hopeful by the end, incredible work of art on every aspect of the film.

Not just the best action film of the decade but probably the best film of the decade. It is PERFECT.

The fact that these cars were actually build and we're functional is amazing!!

I love the little details in this movie, like the extra block of wood on Furiosa's SKS so that she can grip it with her mechanical hand. It shows how much thought went into all of the sets and props.

Makes me sad that Fast and the Furious 9 or whatever made a billion and this movie struggled to get to $300m…

The first time I saw the part where dust covers the truck to put the fire out, then the intake takes a huge "breath" after I remember realizing that this movie is BRILLIANT.

At 3:49 when super charger starts to breathe, that's 100% satisfaction moment of this sequence.

fun fact - the ending of this scene represents Max and Furiosa's upbringings. Max handles the glock the way a cop would - firing multiple times at each target; and Furiosa has the Many Mothers/Vuvalini motto of "one man, one bullet" for saving bullets and being precise, which we don't learn until later

This movie is such a masterpiece

The opening shot of this scene is so great. Furiosa framed behind a skeleton arm pointing forward, basically telling the audience that the future is dead, and that only the dead are going forward. Then Furiosa opening the door and the audience is suddenly reminded she's half dead already and has a literal mechanical/skeleton arm. So much information in such a simple shot, and you didn't even notice it. But your brain did.

I wouldn’t AT ALL ever say that Furiosa was EVER “half dead” in ANY way as she was ALWAYS very much alive in ever scene in this movie as she’s in action with her goals and with Max by her side! Furthest thing from even “half dead” on ANY way, truly!

this and fast and furious movies are some of the best action put to screen!

Good Heavens, the Sound Mixing is perfect! Its the little things, like the groan and air intake of the rig sounding like a wounded and recovered animal.

I get chills everytime in this movie... it really knows how to grab the audience

The color palette of this movie is gorgeous.

Best part is Tom reloading the gun and passing it to Furiosa, with the soundtrack

One of the hardest scenes ever

I watched 2hrs of driving one way and back the other, never once felt bored.

The shot of Immortan Joe making this insane climb with his monster car and than the zoom onto his face is my favorite moment of the movie.

The thing I like about that shot is the symbolic set up, with this tiny rusted VW in the the lower right corner, while the monster truck rolls down towards it.

Saw this in 3d when it first came out. Was hungover as shit, had a big greasy ass breakfast with a ton of coffee. Perfectly fucked up for one HELL of a ride.

I love the music that starts at 1:48 so damn much.

The look Furiosa gave Max after receiving a gun from him is priceless…

I had completely forgotten how bombastic this film is! Thanks for the upload!

I love the unspoken camaraderie between Max and Furiosa. He knew exactly when to start up the rig, right after Furiosa yelled FOOL

Greatest chase scene in all of movie history. The music, the props, the stunts. 10/10

Love how the soundtrack starts dreadful but it keeps sounding more hopeful as the track goes on, you can really hear it when they put off the flames

This movie is filled with some of the greatest action scenes ever filmed.

It's definitely one of the best reboots ever

I love the scene where Max gives her the shotgun. It’s a very special scene between warriors. Here is your weapon, and the nod from max. “We’re in this togeather.”

If you look closely at 3:37 you can see the movie production team made a path of of piled up sand to put out the fire on the War Rig.

Yep, because they're not doing heavy CGI, everything is shot on real location, practical effects required which is awesome because that could reduce the budget than using a computer animation CGI

Came here again after watching furiousa but this is the best of all time

Holy moly the way the truck was shut down by fire and then the sand fills it and turn the fire off to let regain its breath and speed makes it the most beautiful scene

When it all comes to the end, Max always remembers what he is. A survivor, a protector.

Saw this move when it came out in theaters. Still can't stop watching this scene. Its just too good.

Tom Hardy has more talent then any actor of his day. Hopefully they will consider him for 007.

2:45 love this angle, nothing but fury in his eyes👀

One thing i dont see enough people talk about is how quick the truck moved after Furiosa called fool. Despite not seeing what was going down Max was 100% locked in and knew exactly what was going on. Dudes instincts are as crazy as his gun skills.

This movie got a lot of credit for its soundtrack and somehow its still underrated

I don't f*****g know why but the shot that gives me the most emotion is the close-up on the valves of the pipes when they open, and I'm not even a mechanic or car fan but I don't know man, this shot is so simple and yet encapsulates everything for me.

My nephew fell asleep half way watching the last Jedi, so I show him this film instead, he finished it with eyes wide open lol

0:41, I just love how they appear out of the rocks like lurking jackals in the sahara. 10/10 for the thematics of this amazing film.

After seeing Furiosa, I think these bikers might be remnants of Dementus’ gang that defected

I got a little emotional when I saw this for the first time with my brother. We’re in our 30’s now and have families. We grew up watching Mad Max. We had low expectations and we’re just blown away. When he hands her the shot gun and they share that look for a second and the quick cuts and close ups that George Miller is known for. With that awesome score? Man! What a movie and experience! I almost jumped outta my seat cheering.

Saw this in theaters. One of the greatest action movies of all time. I think this could be considered the Terminator 2 of the 2010s.

The teamwork here between Max & Furiosa is just masterpiece!

I’ve watched this movie a dozen times now and this part is my absolute favorite, Brothers in Arms truly was the perfect soundtrack for the scene. Now I can’t wait for Furiosa to come out.

What I love about Max and Furiosa is that they don't need to talk. They just work together so well.
