Who else didn’t recognize Gaius the first time you saw him unmasked? His voice is so different and when the camera zoomed into the masks he had on his belt I thought “wow that’s a lot of ascian masks” cause I couldn’t recognize the white one was from his ARR armor.

His english voice actor also changed from ARR. It's really only impactful if you play in one of the other languages where the VA doesn't change.

The only reason i recognized him was only because of his gunblade. It is majestic, beautiful and i farmed... WAY too many moogle tomestones at praetorium to have the image of that beautifully crafted weapon engraved in my mind forever.

The lore bombs distracted me from just how terrible the Empire's negotiating position was until you spelled it out.

In fairness the Empire's position was better than depicted here. Most of the rebellions had been quashed, which meant that the Empire could once again bring its full attention to Eorzea, and even if they fought off the Empire's full force they would still need to contend with their new super weapon (which destroys the entire world in the beta timeline).

It wasn't, really. The gist of his bargaining position was that the empire had yet to bring it's full might to bear upon any one region. We'd won a few major victories, but most of them had been under very specific circumstances and even still were hard-fought. Taking a minor province (Doma) from a militarily inept viceroy through an alliance of three separate factions with the aid of a demigod was a major event simply because it's the first time we know of that anyone had actually taken back a region from the Empire, but is hardly a show of overall military superiority. There wasn't even a full legion involved as far as I know, just a local garrison. Taking Ala Mhigo was more significant; defeating the XIIth legion under the direct command of the Crown Prince is certainly a major accomplishment, but it took the combined might of four whole nations with additional eastern aid, heroes from around the world, and (again) a demigod to do it. After that, we were fighting them more or less to a standstill. So the Emperor's position was, essentially, "Cool, you beat one of my legions. That's commendable. But I'm involved directly now. Can you defeat two legions simultaneously? Three? Four? What if I throw a little Black Rose your way? You have won some major victories, but the only reason you're still alive is because I'm trying to capture your territory rather than raze it to the ground. I can easily change that policy. I would rather not do that, your lands and people are valuable resources, but I can and I will." And, realistically, he was right. The main reason we're winning as hard as we are NOW is because HE DIED and the empire started tearing itself apart in the battle for succession, and because the person who ended up winning that battle doesn't actually give a shit about war or territory or even The Rejoining.

@@ValkyrieTiara Note that in the original timeline (Crystal Exarch's Timeline) the Alliance pushes the Empire back enough to the point where they start using Black Rose regularly. I think it's heavily implied that the Alliance was winning, and that Ghimlyt Dark was the beginning of a major offensive. I imagine that in the OG timeline, the Scions were all there, so the WoL was not only able to beat Zenos/Elidibus, put possibly killed him right then and there with some White Auracite. This would have caused the Imperial lines to collapse, and Ghimlyt turns from a stalemate in Eorzea's favor into a total Imperial rout. Then when news spreads of what happened, the Empire begins to tear apart at the seams. Legates stop taking orders since the Crown Prince was basically an Ascian zombie is now widely known, and Varis is forced to use Black Rose simply because he no longer has the number advantage.

@@NeoDMC Varis was always going to use Black Rose. It was the influx of Astral aspected Light aether from the First that supercharged it and caused it to end the world in the OG timeline, which was prevented when the rejoining was stopped and the Black Rose factories were destroyed.

all the Gaius lines made me lose my mind laughing, another perfect installment to the series and i'm amazed this series is almost caught up in time for Endwalker! (don't push yourself if you aren't totally done before Endwalker drops tho, i wouldn't want you to feel stressed over it; and besides, people will love it no matter when it releases)
