The airport that took the global spotlight at the 2019 World Architecture Festival is no other than the Mactan-Cebu International Airport located in Cebu, Philippines.

This is the Mactan Cebu International Airport, the airport who took the global spotlight at the 2019 World Architecture Festival for its outstanding and beautiful Filipino design. And it is now considered as one of the best airports in Asia. Mactan Cebu International Airport Terminal 2 won the “Completed Buildings: Transport” category of the prestigious annual awards edging out the world’s number one airport, which is the Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore, along with several other world-class designs. The World Architecture Festival was held in The Netherlands back in December 2019, and it is dubbed as the largest interactive architectural awards program and festival in the world.
The judging panel praised the airport for its simplicity and elegance, as the new airport uses many locally sourced materials which are well integrated into the terminal’s design and landscape plan. The internal spaces were also described to be light and uncluttered, with the design capable of future extension. According to the judges, the terminal not only provides a memorable travel experience but has also touched the chords of local people, making it an immensely popular tourist spot.
Cebu has always been at the forefront of the Philippine tourism industry, and MCIA is a primary gateway that connects travelers to top destinations in the region. Even before the launch of Terminal 2, MCIA was the second-largest airport facility in the Philippines, with 10 million passengers passing through it last year. As tourism in the country continues to surge, particularly in the Visayas, Cebu is in prime position to take on the growing influx of travelers. In this opportune time, the new MCIA Terminal 2 will provide a fresh “first impression” to visitors. If you’re a traveler who just spent most of the day flying, Terminal 2 is a sight for sore eyes. To put it simply, every nook and cranny of Terminal 2 is candy for social media.
The terminal was designed by Hong Kong-based Integrated Design Associates, with local designers Budji Layud, Royal Pinda, and Kenneth Cobonque. The roof, which is made of wood, is the most recognisable element. The structure is composed of an array of glue-laminated arches, which form the roof curvature and define its geometry and modularity. The arches span every 30 metres, allowing the terminal to be as column-free as possible. The white alpine’s wood has a service life of about 200 years and requires a protective coating every 50 years. Then there’s the airport floor, laid with mother-of-pearl shells, a sparkling reminder of Cebu’s famous beaches and marine attractions. The check-in counters are covered in intricate weaves, reminiscent of banig and Visayan baskets. Synthetic stone countertops embellished with Dedon’s environmentally friendly fibre-synthetic mesh weaving accented by LED mood lights make up the check-in counters at the departure hall. Meanwhile, the retail area in the terminal spans approximately 3,000 square meters, and features an 895 square meters walk-through duty free store operated by Duty Free Philippines which complements the look and feel of the terminal.
According to the Department of Tourism, with Mactan being the busiest international airport in the Philippines, this architecturally astounding building serves as an important gateway to the Philippines. The building’s roof represents the ocean, while its expansive and exposed internal structure reminds one of the hull of a boat; its brightness and openness of space, deeply symbolic of the Filipinos’ welcoming nature.

@@mahalagaka4710 Cebu is a province. but within the province there is Cebu City, Lapulapu City, Mandaue, Danao, Bogo, and other cities, and part of it are the towns such us Liloan, Oslob, Badian, Bantayan and so on. That comprises the whole of Cebu province.
As an Aussie, I'm so immensely proud of the Philippines for their achievements. Filipinos are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and the Philippines are a close friend of Australia. Especially these days when China is trying to bully The Philippines and Australia. Our nations need to stand together.

I love this airport I was here 6 times last year from Switzerland.The people working at the airport are quite helpful and very friendly,they always help me with my lugggage etc.Mabuhay ang taga philippines 🇵🇭.Can’t wait to go back 🙏🏻😂❤️

This air port gives you a glimpse of what Cebu can offer. I like how they incorporate truly the resources that can be found in the area, with a touch of contemporary design. It’s an element of magical ambiance.
This airport is marvelous. It is unique and an architectural masterpiece. Combines elegance of materials and provides a beautiful experience.

Also, the flooring of MCIA Terminal 2 are made with real Mother of Pearl shells by a local Cebuano company that resemble as beaches of Cebu. When light hits the floor, it sparkles like the white sand beaches of Cebu. It takes about the 12 publishings to achieve that certain shine.

Among the airports with metal and glass structures, this one rises above them all. It is not the size but the uniqueness and relatability of this airport to the people it represents.

I've flown into that airport with my wife (January of last year) We hope to go again, once the travel restrictions are lifted. My wife is from Barili, Cebu. We have a house in Santa Lucia, Asturias, Cebu.
I've been there a lot of times and it's never a dull moment when you're in that airport
I have traveled to many countries around the world. I visited the Philippines three times (Manila, Zamboanga, Palawan) however not visited Cebu yet. But after watching this video and several other videos of Mactan-Cebu I love this airport. It is modern, spotless, and very welcoming. I can't wait to go to Cebu and see this magnificent place in real life. Congratulation to Cebu and the Philippines for this awesome airport! Love from Canada!

Was there in January its a beautiful airport
This structure speaks volumes in art and science.
For me, everytime I walk in the terminal, the wooden beam ceiling reminded of a turned over boat. The waving roof remind me of being inside an over turned boat under the wave and the mother of pearl floor complete the whole experience of being in an over turned boat in the shallow sea. The mood lighting of the check-in tables represent the sun light passing through the ocean waves as it interact with sand of the shallow sea. The sky light represent the cracked hull of the boat.
I LOVE THAT AIRPORT!!!! flew in and out of there a few times and that is the best airport I have ever been in!

That’s true. But I believe Iloilo would have its own metropolis in the future. It’s much better if there would be three metropolitan areas in the Visayas: Metro Cebu, Metro Panay and Metro Tacloban

Big Congratulations to you, together w/ Budji, Pinda and HK IDA! It is with pride and honor for Mactan-Cebu Int'l. Airport to be voted as the world's most beautiful airport in 2019. That was a fabulous win against Singapore's Jewel Changi Int'l Airport. Can't wait to visit Cebu again (after several decades ago)...promise to be there after the pandemic. We went to Singapore in Nov. last year and the new Changi is massive and very modern but I think our own MCIA is really impressive and beautiful.

I live here in Lapu-Lapu City and I pass by the airport every time I travel from home to Cebu. Hahaha I feel so proud

Most desrving and impressive. The incorporation of woods in the design gives such a pleasant sight. The uncluttered layout gives a nice feeling in traveling.

I've been there, so huge and elegant ❤
MCIA = Lacoste/ Hermes known for its simplicity and stayed true to its DNA. While Changi = Forever 21/ Balmain there’s so much to see and extremely interesting, a lot of wow factor. Reference in terms of aesthetics if you know what I mean. As for me personally, always preferred simplicity as there’s so much pressure and stress when traveling. Things can get very overwhelming in Changi. You just want to relax while appreciating the airport’s architecture. Just my 2 cents

I remember I went to this airport on its first week on opening. A few stuff were still being constructed but an overall nice airport. I have also been to terminal 2 a lot and I can say it is a huge step up. I remember they had a countdown in terminal 1 for when it would open.
Yes cebu is nice than hk and to the natural view cebu is best with the Natural and beach resources cebu is best not so much decorated but best architectural design
