Biggest Airport Development in Southeast Asia
Here are the World Class Airport Developments in Southeast Asia, transforming the aviation landscape in each country, and in the Region.
New Phnom Penh International Airport, Cambodia
The construction work on a Chinese-built new Phnom Penh international airport, formally known as the Techo International Airport, is expected to be completed in 2024.
Invested by the Cambodia Airport Investment Company Limited, the 1.5 billion US dollar project is being constructed by the China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Company Limited on an area of 2,600 hectares in the southern Kandal, and Takeo provinces. Making it one of the world's largest airports by land area.
According to the updated master schedule provided by the contractor, the project in the first phase is expected to be completed in the middle of 2024, with more than 50 percent of the construction work had been completed.
Eastern Economic Corridor Airport City, Thailand
The construction of the U -Tapao International Airport of the Eastern Airport City projects, is expected to commence this year. The $9 billion development plan was approved in 2020, which comprises the third airport terminal, the Airport City commercial gateway, the free trade zone, maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities, and a Training center for aeronautical personnel.
U-Tapao International Airport near Pattaya, Thailand, is undergoing a major upgrade to become one of the most innovative airports and multi-modal transport hubs in the Asia region.
The expansion will deliver 450,000m² of passenger terminal buildings with the capacity to handle 60 million passengers annually, and 124 aircraft stands. Advanced facilities such as automated people mover, self-check-in, and self-bag drop system will also be created.
Sangley Point International Airport, Philippines
The Sangley Point International Airport development project will be the newest Airport in the country within mega Manila. It will supplement the country’s increasing demand for air travel.
This $10.9 billion Airport project, is a joint consortium between the provincial government of Cavite, and local and International Companies.
The new Sangley Point International Airport is a foundation of a world-class global hub airport. Adjacent to the heart of Metro Manila. Key to the Philippines Airport system, Clark International Airport, and New Manila International Airport in the North.
Long Thanh International Airport, Vietnam
Construction of Vietnam’s $14.5 billion Long Thanh International Airport, with a capacity of 100 million passengers per annum, is at last underway, seven years after it was first mooted. The airport is the most expensive infrastructure project in Vietnam's history.
Break ground early in 2021, Piling work for the passenger terminal was completed one month ahead of the schedule and more than 14 million cubic meters of soil has been dug, filled, and leveled. While the construction of the Long Thanh International Airport's passenger terminal will start this year.
Covering a total area of more than 5,580 hectares, the airport will straddle six communes in the Long Thanh district. The airport will be built in three phases over three decades.
New Manila International Airport, Philippines
The New Manila International Airport is an under-construction Airport City in Bulacan that will serve as the main aviation gateway in the Philippines. The 2,500 hectares gateway has a design capacity of 100 million passengers a year but can be expanded to 200 million, and is targeted to accommodate 240 aircraft movements per hour. Making New Manila International Airport, the biggest Airport in Southeast Asia and the second-biggest airport in the world.
The proposed airport will feature at least four runways, expandable to six, Eight Taxi ways, a world-class terminal, and a modern and interlinked infrastructure network that includes expressways and railways. New Manila International Airport, is part of the envisioned 12,000 hectares of aerotropolis that features residential zones, commercial districts, government centers, a seaport, and an industrial zone.
Land development for the New Manila International Airport in Bulacan, undertaken by Boskalis, is almost 50% complete. Land development is expected to be done by the end of 2023. By 2024, the project’s proponent can start construction of the runway and passenger terminal building.

Unfortunately, tourism is unlikely to flourish until the Philippines offers a safe environment for tourists that enables the major western package holiday companies to take it seriously as a vacation destination. Alternatives like Indonesia and Thailand offer much greater security and are experienced in delivering the required destination facilities.

If NMIA is complete, I wonder what will be it's airport code. I have some and I wonder if they're already taken or retired which are NML and NMI. NAIA's code is MNL. Also, if the new airport is done, it'll be made for all long distance flights and those longer flights will be transfered to there as flights to Europe, Western North America and the Middle East. I wonder if there will be new flights when the airport is done. NAIA is made for domestic and regional flights and as for regional flights, it's for serving Southeast Asia, East Asia, Oceania, South Asia and Central Asia.

Sangley international Airport is Mandatory Projects of Government, in another years to come, after Final Bidding in Public., because the Government is planning to Privatised the NAIA Airport, for Bases Conversion And Development Authority (BCDA), it is the Smart City Like Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City, the major Problem of NAIA AIRPORT is many surroundings of Tallest Building around the Airport and Sub-urban City noisy and heavy traffic location. SM prime Corporation is planning to Buy NAIA AIRPORT, it is the second Option, I think SM Corporation is planning to make it Entertainment City for Largest Casino and Hotel in Asia. VERY Shortsighted vision,, very slump and blunt plan project to build anything in the middle of sea landfill. Knowing and acknowledge the future threat by water rising is something,, however how to implement to avoid that is another. We all know that nobody can beat the relentless typhoon high waves attack, the rapid perspective of rising ocean water level, history is done..
lets go ASEAN

Or 2025
I think having 4 mega airports in close proximity with each other - the existing NAIA, Sangley, Bulacan, and Clark, is kinda overkill. And then there is Subic. It's either Sangley or Bulacan, but not both. I don't know how planes coming in and out of the "tiny" airspace will not cause problems. The 3 terminals of the existing NAIA could be used just for domestic and cargo. Clark could be used for those in northern and central Luzon; Bulacan or Sangley for those in the NCR region. Maybe, turn the airport in Legaspi into a mega one to serve the Bicol region. So is the Laoag airport into a mega one to serve the northern aside from Clark. I may be wrong, but just saying.

NAIA is cramped in a highly dense populated urban area it's too close to residential areas and now surrounded by high rise buildings which is a hazard to pilots just like the old Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong which was closed down in 1998 and redeveloped to a Cruise Terminal after it was transferred the new Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok which is one of the Top 10 Best International Airports in the world.
Come on.. *TWO* giant BRAND NEW International Airports, not just in Philippines *BUT MANILA ALONE??!!!!* Hmmm.. We'll have to see..

From being the sick man of Asia, The Philippines is now recovering to raise its flag as the new Asian tiger in terms of ecomic growth by developing infrastructure and creating more jobs to the people. Probably, we look poor to the eyes for some of our neigbouring countries and yet we are a transformational nation in many ways...we can transform insecurities into opportunities, mistakes into success, pride into humility and sufferings into strength that trully made us standing proud as a unified country to the world...a nation with a mission for a great vision!

You are right. You do look sick. I hope Philippines overcomes it's challenges, many of which are self imposed, and finds a new and secure position in the world. It cannot be a proud nation whilst the dream of many is too live abroad as OFWs in order to just feed their families.
