    You are literally the only channel I have found who has a tutorial for this program. Thankyou very much. I’m a beginner but I would like to import some gaming images and frame the piece for my gaming room. I heard about this program in an article but couldn’t find any tutorials, so Thankyou very much because this video just popped up and it’s exactly what I need

    Hi +Diana Schofield, for some reason I can't directly reply to your comment, the "reply" link is missing. That's a great question, and yes, you can use fractionals in MacStitch. You can either chart them directly by using the toolbar at the top of the screen, or there's a super neat tool called "auto" that looks like a magic wand in the top row of tools. It has a mini dropdown menu, and you can select "automatic outline" or "automatic halfstitch." When you click on one of those options, you'll get a little wand with a yellow tip, and wherever you click on your pattern will either outline that section in backstitch (auto outline) or it will turn any edges of colours into halfstitch and fractionals (auto halfstitch). It's a really neat feature and one I've only recently discovered myself. I do try to design patterns without fractionals as I know many people go insane with them, but they sure do add a lot to a smaller piece. As far as I know there's no way to import an image or preview an image with the halfstitch function activated. You have to transfer sections to halfstitch after the image is imported, but I think if you did a preview of your pattern at twice the thread count you intend to stitch on then that should give you a good indication of what the pattern might look like with halfstitch. For example, if you're wanting a pattern to be a certain finished size on 14 count, if you do the import image preview at 28 count then that should give you a good idea of what a 14 count pattern with halfstitch should look like. Of course you'd import your image at 14 count then use the wand to adjust whichever sections of the pattern you want to become fractional stitches, but it is quite quick to do. Also, if you don't like the effect, you can just undo it so you don't mess up your pattern. If you have any other questions, please let me know! :)

    Have you contacted the developers? There shouldn't be any reason for that to happen, and that's totally not normal as they do keep it really up to date. But this video is several years old as well, and I was using a MacBook Pro so I don't know if there is a difference, and of course it would depend on what OS you're running on your Air (like Catalina was a huge change in OS), how old your Air is, etc. Talk to the developers, I can't do anything to help you unfortunately, but they can, or at the very least 100% want to know about issues like yours. ❤️

    It's design software, not software to use when you're stitching your pattern up (I use it to stitch from so I can make changes to the design as needed, but I also don't need to mark anything off as I just count my stitches). If you try and mark off your progress in the software, what you'll actually be doing is changing the original pattern, which obviously isn't ideal. If you need to track your progress, you'll need to export it as a PDF, then use PDF editing software to mark up your progress. Or of course you can print off the PDF then mark it off with a highlighter or pen as you go. 🙂

    +Lisa Hamel Hi Lisa, I bought the Premium version as it has the best options available for exporting your patterns (among other functions). I'm pretty sure on their site it lists the difference between the three versions - I just had a good look at that chart and figured out which one I would be happiest with. I also decided that the few extra dollars to get the Premium version would be worth it over the long haul, as I knew I'd be using the software a lot. How do you like the trial version? I was hooked as soon as I started playing with it. :)

    Hello fellow Ottawan! Thanks for your video :) I just downloaded the demo of this software, and your tut vid helped me to decide to buy it! I only have questions about exporting...is .jpeg available? Also, in some kits that I get, there is a guide on the bottom of each page showing what section of the full image that each page is for (hope that I am explaining this clearly). Does Winstitch offer this?

  • @peacockandfig

    @peacockandfig

    +petitecherie Haha helllooo! I'm actually back out on the best coast now, I moved to Victoria last August. I'm sooo not missing the Ottawa winters, I was living smack downtown on Metcalfe and trying to walk on the sidewalks was always "interesting." ;) Victoria is much more civilized with its weather, the cherry trees and apple trees are blossoming right now. :) You can export the thumbnail image or stitched view as a PNG file (in the export menu at the bottom), and then that's easy enough to change to a jpeg. You can either just change the extension manually on the image itself, or you can load it into a free photo editing software like pixlr.com/editor to change the image size, saved format, etc. The pattern itself only exports as a PDF, as there would be way too much information for it to save as a PNG or jpeg. But what you can do is there are lots of free online software around that can convert a PDF to a jpeg (like this one - pdf2jpg.net/). So you'd go through the export settings choosing whether you want page numbers, copyright, # of stitches, etc, export it as a PDF, then import it into that program to convert it to a jpeg. And yes, in the 2016 version a page map was added to the features (which makes me really happy, I'd emailed Jeff the software developer asking how to do that and he added it into the newest version). In the export settings, there are six tabs, and the third is "preview page." On there you can see under the settings for the preview image (whether it's to be framed, etc) is a clickable box asking if you'd like to include a page map of the pattern. This is such a great feature, I love it. It doesn't put a little chart on the bottom of each page like some patterns have, but it does show on one page where each pattern page is in relation to the whole. I actually prefer that as then more of the page is dedicated to the pattern itself. Super cool. :) Happy designing! Feel free to show me pics of what you're working on via my Facebook page at facebook.com/handylittlegadget. :)

    Thank you for this tutorial. It's great and informative. I'm considering buying the software and doing my own patterns. It it a one off purchase or a monthly fee do you now? I did cross stitch many years ago but working over a printed pattern on the material. Many years later I am trying this method following a pattern so very new to this. It may be a daft question, but does the software automatically calculate the amount of thread you should use per colour and how much thread you would require for the project? Also does it calculate blended stitches? The first a kit that I have bought has the print out of the pattern, the key for the colours but also how many strands to use, and which ones are blended stitches. Can it also calculate how much thread would be needed for the project as my kit comes with all of the thread. Or is this something that comes with experience and knowledge? Thank you in advance.

    Hi Jane! It's a one-off purchase, but you can see more details about that on their website as I bought it many years ago. It's design software, you can't load in patterns you already have, it's not a PDF reader or anything like that. If you're designing your own patterns then yes it does calculate the amount of thread you need. If you have a kit, depending on where you got it and the quality, most kit manufacturers will give a bit of extra floss of each colour, to allow for mistakes, differences in stitching tension, etc. But not all, some are really cheap and nasty and won't even give you enough to finish. Unfortunately the only way to know is to actually stitch the project up, and if you run out of a colour you'll need to contact the company that designed the kit and ask for more. 🙂

    @@shahadalkhajeh Hi there, glad you liked it! I'm not quite sure what you're asking, when you set up your document you choose the size of your canvas, and at what thread count. For diamond painting, I'm not sure what "thread count" you'd choose, I don't know how many of the stickers fit per inch. So you'd just set up your canvas the size you want from the very start, not try and change the size later, that won't work. Pretty sure the software now can generate a "diamond painting" chart, so you'd have to play with it to see if it automatically sets the thread count (diamonds per inch). 😊

  • @peacockandfig

    @peacockandfig

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Avis McDaniel Thanks for your question! Yes, that's pretty much right - basically what you'd do is import the photo of the flower (and edit it first if you wanted to crop it, heighten any colours, etc) into the software. When you do the import, you can choose the thread count of the fabric, the finished size, the floss manufacturer (Anchor, DMC, etc), how many colours max you want, and a few other options. You select the floss manufacturer yourself, but the software will choose the colours that match most closely to the photo. There's a preview button so you can get an idea of how the pattern will look once the photo is fully imported. Once you're happy with the preview, you click ok and shabam, there's your fantastic new pattern. Obviously if you're using more colours, a higher finished size, and a higher thread count, you can get more details and more accurate representation of the colours in the photo. Here's a link to one of my blog posts, you can see in a lot more detail what some of the various import settings do, and the level of detail you can get (and I got nowhere even close to using higher thread counts or much bigger sizes in my trials). bit.ly/FlowerPowerMacStitch Let me know if you have any other questions! :) Dana

    I recently bought a cross stitch kit where the supplied chart is approx 100 by 100 stitches (luckily there are some large areas where no stitches are required !). I was wondering whether this chart could be imported into Winstitch (e.g as a number of images) and then manipulated in Winstitch to form a single chart. If this is possible then I can easily print areas of the chart for use when stitching. Dealing with photocopies of the supplied chart (even enlarged) is not ideal

  • @peacockandfig

    @peacockandfig

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yeah it's totally not possible Layton, any cross stitch software will just see the imported image as a flat image (so will try and render the grid, symbols, etc itself, but it can't get the same level of detail unless you make your version of the pattern massive). OCR would be cool in software, but then it also makes it a lot easier for pirates to steal and reproduce patterns themselves. The only way to get your pattern into any software is to chart it by hand, stitch by stitch, following your chart as the reference. 🙂

That's not possible -- each symbol = one specific colour, the chart grids are printed so small there'd be no chance of getting anything bigger than one character in each grid square. • @peacockandfig

    @peacockandfig

    8 жыл бұрын

    +christine marino Hi Christine, thanks for your question! No, you can't export the patterns in BMP format - as a full pattern it only exports as a PDF file. It saves in .chart format, so you can open it in any software that accepts that format (I think PC Stitch does). I don't know of any actual software that allows the patterns to be exported in jpg/bmp/png format, which is usually used purely for images. Depending on the size of the pattern technically you could export it as a one-page pattern (but the colour key and such would still be on a separate page), but if the pattern was more than about 60 stitches square then it would be really really small and impossible to read. As for not having a graph, yes you can toggle the grid lines off and on while designing, and I'm 99% positive you can export it without the grid lines too (although it would make following your pattern really hard). You can include a full colour preview image of the pattern when you export it (or export it separately), that is a png file if exported separately (and it doesn't have grid lines, it looks like how it would stitched). You wouldn't be able to stitch from that though unless your pattern is really small and simple, you wouldn't be able to follow along too well without the grid lines. If you check out this video of a pattern sample (my Plum Blossom pattern), then you'll see the preview image, how the pattern gets exported, etc. :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWR3stukqKe-qJM.html If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! :)

  • @peacockandfig

    @peacockandfig

    8 жыл бұрын

    +papersteven Hi, thanks very much for your question. I'd actually not used any of the online programs up until you asked, I really wanted the flexibility that I knew that stand-alone software could give me. I also use a Mac which is why I use MacStitch as opposed to other programs like PC Stitch (although MacStitch/WinStitch can open PC Stitch patterns). So I had a little play with both the sites, and here's what I came up with. Crossstitch.com - no ability to make your own patterns other than using only text - they have a lot of free patterns available, but I didn't look at those as I wanted the software to be able to make my own patterns Pic2pat.com - image uploads are limited to 4MB - only limited to 4 floss manufacturers (whereas MacStitch has dozens with an option to buy even more floss manufacturers charts to add into the software) - set sizes for finished product - you can only select their pre-determined output sizes - only has 6 fabric count sizes to choose from (8 to 18, so if you're wanting to use a higher thread count you can't make a pattern for it in Pic2Pat) - your finished piece is produced in several versions depending on the number of colours, but those numbers aren't given to you anywhere unless you click on the image and actually download the pattern (my trial was 75 colours at most and 6 colours was the least) - pattern itself seemed ok (other than some details being blown out), but it has no export options, no way to make any changes to the pattern at all before or after producing it, no options for beads or special stitches, borders, colour intensity, can't change the floss manufacturer once it's produced, no way to change the symbols or how the pattern is produced (black and white symbols, colour blocks, colour symbols, etc) - no way to trial how a different fabric count will affect the finished product unless you go through all the steps to a downloaded pattern then compare them - there is no way to store your pattern in the program itself, you have to download the pattern and store it on your computer So all in all if you're just wanting to make a really simple pattern then Pic2Pat isn't terrible, but it really doesn't have anywhere near the flexibility that MacStitch or other standalone software has. The free online pattern softwares have a place, but I really believe that you get what you pay for, and MacStitch has so many options and capabilities there's no way I could use a free software. Plus the fact that if you want to sell your patterns or designs, MacStitch has great export functions (that are outlined in another one of my videos) so you can really customize what you want your product to look like. I wouldn't use a Pic2Pat pattern as something other than for personal use as it's branded with their company name and logo on the top of each page. I hope that helps! As I said in the video you can download a demo version of MacStitch (or WinStitch) for free, you just can't save any of your patterns in the demo version. You can see all the templates they have, special stitches, alphabets, etc, they really give you a lot for what you pay for the software. And their customer service is really good, I've always gotten a response in less than a day for any questions I've had.

    Hi again, a couple more points about Pic2Pat. A few people in one of the Facebook cross stitch groups I belong to were actually just having a conversation about that website. A few people who have used Pic2Pat and stitched from the patterns said the colours you see on the screen are way off what you will actually stitch. One woman said it's really awful for doing portraits and skin tones, she found out the hard way how off the colours actually are when stitched. I noticed that too when I imported my painting as a sample pattern - the colours were very muted. Plus there is no option for backstitch if you like that. So all in all it might be ok for making something small like an ornament, but I wouldn't do anything larger with it. From what people have said who have stitched from their patterns, they're really unhappy with the finished product. If you're going to spend dozens or hundreds of hours stitching something, to me it makes more sense to start off with the best quality pattern you can. The free software is unfortunately just too limited to produce a high quality pattern.

    Hi Angela, that's a great question, and yes you can! I have a short video in my playlist about how to make a kids cross stitch pattern. That one has some tips about how to create a pattern from scratch (including using the text tool). Even with the patterns I create from a painting I import, I always make changes to the pattern by hand (increase detail or highlights in certain areas, get rid of colours that only have a few stitches, adjust the tone of certain colours, etc). I have both a Mac and a PC, and my PC is a Surface Pro 4 which has a pressure-sensitive stylus I can "draw" with directly into WinStitch. I created all of the patterns in my newest Adorned Life Collection this way, by drawing them by hand using the stylus straight into the program. You could do the same thing with a mouse or a trackpad, I just prefer the stylus as I can "draw" more smoothly. If you want to check out what I did with this method, you can go to peacockandfig.com/adorned-life-collection/ and you'll see what you can do with creating directly into the software. You can also add specialty stitches, beading placement, buttons, etc in the software directly. :) Let me know if you have any other questions! :) Dana

I haven't downloaded the software since I originally purchased it, but if you go to ursasoftware.com, you'll see the options there (I believe there are different price options). The developer Jeff is always updating the software and making improvements, so for me it's worth having the premium version. I'm pretty sure you can download a trial of the software too for free, you can get used to it and see if you like it. You just can't save or print patterns you make in the demo version, you have to pay for the software for that. You can also contact them via their site if you have any questions, they're very approachable. I actually use it on my Mac and my PC, both versions work very well. :) Good luck!

    I would like to use my own paintings to make patterns. There can be a lot of strokes and color variations. Do you think this software can handle that?

  • @peacockandfig

    @peacockandfig

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jane! Yes it would be fine for that, it does depend on the finished size you choose and the thread count of the fabric. The higher the thread count and the bigger the finished size, the more detail the software can render. That's why a lot of the art patterns available right now are huge finished sizes and on 25 count fabric or higher -- that's the only way to render all the details and colour variations. You will likely still have to do some adaptations to the patterns once they're generated (adjust details, play with the colours a bit, etc). One thing to know is that the colour shown on your screen is a close approximation, but it may not be exact to how the pattern will stitch up. The reason is that it's very difficult to mimic floss colours on a screen (as some colours are very close in tone in real life), and your screen settings can dramatically alter how you view the digital preview colours. I'd suggest getting a real floss chart (like DMC has one) so that you can see what colours the software has chosen in real life, and make any subtle adjustments you like. Here's a link to one of a series of paintings I just did in MacStitch -- peacockandfig.com/night-cross-stitch-pattern/. I purposely left the finished size and thread count smaller (it's about 12" wide on 14 count) simply because I didn't want to create poster sized patterns that would take people years to complete. So some of the detail in the original paintings was lost a bit, but I'm happy with it so that's all that matters. :)

I'm using a slightly older version (there are a few new features), but you'll get the general idea. I've never tried printing a pattern directly from the design screen, I always export it as a PDF. It's a really flexible software, you can produce it as a one-page chart (like for viewing a really small pattern or for viewing a pattern on a digital device), add in extra pages, cover and footer pages, choose the format of the pattern (colour, symbols, black & white, etc), and a lot more. There's also a page map option in the newest version which is great. :)

    Haha no problem! If you're using a photo (and if the pattern is for sale it has to be your own photo, you can't use images from the internet), the simple steps are you would upload the image into the software, choose the finished size, number of colours, etc, and then create the pattern. From there you can make adjustments by hand to colours, detail in the image, etc. When you're ready to actually create the pattern, you go to the export functions in the import/export menu. I've done another video just about how to do the export. That video is based on a slightly older version as the software is always being updated, but it's basically the same. :) Dana

    You’ll have to check the manufacturer’s website about that, I haven’t used it in many years. In general though, cross stitch design software that’s any good (particularly if you want to sell patterns) isn’t going to have an app. The reason is that it’s quite large software, and for it to have all the functions you need as a designer and be able to produce good quality PDF charts (or other file types), you have to be running it on a desktop or laptop, on a full operating system. Mobile devices are “abbreviated” versions of operating systems, they don’t have the power and resources that a full OS does. Like colours may look off on your screen, you might not be able to export files well, your pattern size might be limited, etc. 😊

    +Cristina Vladarean Hi Cristina, thanks for the good question! You can use centimetres for figuring out your finished size and the size of your working area when designing a pattern. The software will indicate those sizes in both inches and centimetres at the same time. The only thing that you must only use inches for is when selecting the thread count of the fabric you want to stitch on (as that determines the finished size, amount of floss needed, etc). Cross stitch fabrics like linen and Aida are only denoted in stitches per inch (like 14 count is 14 stitches per inch). It wouldn't be that hard to make up a little chart with conversions for the fabric thread counts (let me know if you need help and I can post a chart), but unfortunately they are always in stitches per inch when you buy them. Hope that helps! :)

    +Cristina Vladarean Not a problem, if you can't figure it out just let me know (I actually really like math). :) I'm from Canada and New Zealand, and in Canada we use both metric (centimeters) and imperial (inches), so I understand how it's hard sometimes for other countries to wrap their heads around imperial as it's pretty much only the US that uses that exclusively. And don't worry about any grammar mistakes, I used to teach English in Japan so it doesn't bother me at all (and your English is very good by the way). :)

    @peacockandfig

    9 жыл бұрын

    +Cristina Vladarean Hi Cristina, yes there is a feature that can do that. What you need to do is click on the colour in the palette that you want to "highlight" (in the upper left menu next to your pattern), go into the "palette" menu in the upper toolbar, and select "flash stitches of the active thread." Then all the stitches of that colour will blink a few times so you can see where they are. They won't stay lit up, but it's a good way to find that particular colour of floss. It only works for floss colours though as beads, knots, buttons, etc don't show up in the palette menu. The company is really quick at responding to questions though, so if you were wanting to use a lot of beads in a pattern then possibly they would have a way for you to select just one colour or size of bead if you asked them. If they don't have that feature, it's possible they could include it in their next version of the program. Thanks for the question. :)

What did I do? I feel like this thing is going to be huge! I hardly even know how to put the pages together and graph the cloth to stich in. It's 61 colors in total and the graph on the pattern goes from 10-500 across and 10-370 down. I believe I copied the size of your demonstration. Does that sound right to you? When the photo is at 0% it looks like the finished piece would be 20"x15"..... I don't even have the tools to put the cloth on. Do you have a suggestion to what lap scroll would be best to use? 6 жыл бұрын

    Haha yeah, that's massive -- if you click on the stitch count at the bottom right of the screen, that will open up your settings, and it will tell you how big it will end up at your chosen thread count. When you import an image you can choose how big you want it to end up (there's a slider at the top), as well as what thread count, how many colours, etc. The bigger it is the more detailed it will be, but that's really huge, that will take you years to stitch. I did one that was about 180x240, and that took me 9 months. So you can always import your image again, and choose a smaller size so it's easier to buy materials (and less expensive). And you can choose a pattern overlap (I think it's on the first tab when you export the pattern, I usually use an overlap of 5), and there's also a page map function now so it will give you a chart showing the layout of all the pages (that's a new function in the export settings). If you're in the US 123stitch.com has a lot of great materials to choose from, so I'd recommend that one. Don't forget you'll need fabric that's bigger than your stitched area, you'll need a margin on all sides to allow for finishing or framing. I usually recommend 3" on all sides (so add 6" to the vertical and horizontal dimensions). 🙂

    Hi Barb, thanks for your question! There are two ways you can resize the image. The first (and easiest) is when you're going through the advanced image import options, at the top of the list of choices is a slider for the finished size. You can move that slider so it results in the size you'd like (you can see the numbers changing as you move the slider). Usually it's in inches unless you select metric in your preferences for the software. Also, in the same list of options is where you'd select your thread count, which will also change the finished size of your piece. I'd select your thread count first and then use the slider for the finished size. If you do it the other way around, the finished size will adjust automatically according to your thread count you select. The second way you can resize an image is once the pattern is created. If you look at the very bottom right of the pattern, you'll see your stitch count (like 22 x 35). If you click on that, that will open an options menu where you can change the finished size, change the thread count, add a border, etc. If you do change the finished size, it will ask if you want the whole image to be resized or not. It depends on whether you want your whole design scaled up or down, or whether you're just trying to make the area around your stitching larger or smaller. Have a play with that function and try it both ways, you'll see the differences once you start playing with it. I wouldn't use that to completely resize a large piece though, as you could lose detail, it's better to start off with the size you want in your import settings. Let me know if that helps or not! :) Dana

    Hi Barb! The email address for Ursa Software is info@ursasoftware.com. Just give them a shout and explain the tech issues you're having and they'll help you out (Jeff the developer is always updating the software and is super helpful). It may be something to do with your operating system (like if it's really old), but Jeff would be the best person to ask about that. :) As for the size of the finished pattern, that slider will change the finished size, it has nothing to do with the original size of the image you're importing. However, if you are trying to import a tiny photograph and then make a really big detailed pattern from it, you're going to lose a lot of detail as the original photo can't be enlarged that big. But you'd be able to see that from the preview (once it's working). In the demo software you can't save the pattern or print from it. When I first downloaded the demo it you could preview the pattern, but maybe that's changed for the demo. You could also try and make sure you have a lower number of threads selected for the preview. I've found if you leave it on the default (where it will choose the number of threads), you can't do a preview as it's almost too many options for it. But if you select the number of threads (I usually never go over 30), then the preview works. Do try that and see if that works, and if you're still getting the flashing thing then contact Jeff. You could also just skip the preview part and just create the pattern, you can't save it anyway with the demo and you'll be able to zoom in and out in the software to see details and such. If you don't like something you could just create the pattern again until you figure out which settings work best for you. :) I almost always turn off the "dither" checkbox in the advanced import settings (it reduces the # of colours you'll need by creating more confetti stitches). Some people really like the dither function though. :)
