It is sad that people automatically assume because a person has a physical disability that their cognitive abilities are also affected. Sadly, over half of the CP population has a perfectly intelligent brain trapped inside a body that just won't cooperate with their brain. I have a friend with CP that affects her walking and her speech (making it slower and she is prone to pausing between words) but her intelligence is above average. She went to college and grad school. She has a husband and a son. But, when people hear her speak or see her walk, they automatically start speaking slower or even louder (as if that makes sense) until she ensures them that she can understand them just fine. It drives me nuts, but she is so patient with people.

Kat dolphinwhat but cp is a general term. There are a lot of different forms of cp. My sister has peri-ventricular lucomalaysia, I don't know if that's the right way to spell it but it basically means the white brain matter around a certain part of her brain is damaged which results in her inability to straightener her legs and walk without assistance.

Kayla G I know. Sometimes it can be bothering. Thankfully I was blessed enough to not have it that bad. It affects my legs and makes it hard for me to walk and it affects my hands but like it was worse with my hands when i was little but now they're almost like normal and I'm in gate classes.

to everyone who is confused, Cerebral Palsy rarely ever effects mental function. a person with the condition can have children, a job, and speak normally. Mackenzie had an extreme case but she is not intellectually challenged, as you can probably tell from her conversations. do not assume she isn't mentally sound because her body is different than yours.

Cami Plaquin thank you for this. My sister and cousin have cp and they are honestly smarter and understand things better than people with no disabilities. A lot of people talk down to my sister like she's stupid and it takes a lot for me not to punch them in the face! We usually just laugh at the person when we walk away.

When a severly handicapped person that is unable to control half the muscles on their body is forced to make a speech in class with a bunch of students you don't argue wether it was correctly done or not. Melissa McGrath her fault? what? Sieptium I think that her grades on speech are not counted, but other subjects are. I know a person from my school who has really, REALLY great memory, but he seldom speaks. If he does, then it's very soft and often inaudible. My PE teacher once told me that he gets his grades from the seatworks and quizzes they've given to him, because he's not that physically active.

It's weird how we connect intellect with speech. She's very smart and just cool cus she can use her feet to type and talk and alot of stuff we wouldn't ever have to face ourselves. And she really needs those credits for her speech. It's like a void being opened and showing the world hey I have a brain and I have opinions but I don't speak like you though

Wow, Mackenzie is such a great person. I really like her positive attitude. When she was sharing a laugh with her father as he was brushing her teeth in the morning, that just must make her Dad's day, for it is such a joyous laugh. She has some fantastic parents that are so understanding, but yet involve her with as much as they can and value her opinion. There is so much going on behind her eyes, I think that Mackenzie is going to have a very productive and happy life and I wish her all the best, she's such an inspiration to all of us.

Can't believe that she didn't get cred for doing the speech. She probably put a lot more effort into it than any other student in her class did - and she had to do it twice, yet no cred? I really hope she is strong and determined enough to go forward with this, because someone who is in a high position should look at it and say "hey this is crazy, of course you should have your creds for this speech". The fault that it didn't work out weren't hers so she shouldn't be punished for it. I don't have any physical disability but would love to get to know all kinds of people, including those with for example Mackenzie's condition. I believe getting to know different people and see their view of life and how they are as a person makes you much richer as a person and it would be amazing if I ever got the opportunity to be a "normal" friend to anyone who would want that really.

This is such an inspiration! It proves to the world that disabled people are capable of much more! It's shows how much more strength that they have mentally and physically as opposed to people with no disability! I believe that they are stronger than I in so many ways because they go through much more than I could! Maybe sometimes when they want to speak they have a hard time to express it. I think that we all take some things for granted like speaking and being able to express how we feel when some people have it rough to speak out! She is so so smart and I immediately loved her personality at the beginning of the video!

There isn't much treatment for CP except physical therapy... which has mixed results. So her diagnosis at 9 months isn't actually that big a deal. People who have less severe CP sometimes aren't diagnosed until they're in grade school actually. I would like to know what she wants to do for her career as well.

She is a wonderful, bright and strong young woman. Go girlfriend. Don't take no shizzle from anyone. Those idiots at the school would fail Stephen Hawking!! That kind of discrimination makes my blood boil. I have a physical disability and I would never accept that treatment. I am glad her parents fight it but they need to stop expecting "normies" to apologize and fix things just because they ask. Don't mess around with the niceties... get on the media and scream blue murder about the (lack-of)-education system. Would you want your kid attending a school that openly taught kids that equality is too much trouble? Just stop ever expecting normies to understand, get in their face until they figure it out.
