I think he's just tired of interviewers not doing proper research of the cast' background. It goes to show that these interviewers aren't doing their jobs well and Mackenyu is done with it.
@ixizn

Doesn’t even necessarily have to be interviewers not doing their research, it’s just one of those general questions they’d ask for the viewer’s sake, no matter what the adaption was. If I remember right the first guy who asked in this vid had a more personally tailored question lined up for him about it but it’s still one of those natural things to throw out for the whole cast to answer

I think it's good interviewers are like that. If you're Asian, you're not "American" for others. It's cool so far interviewers are not bringing up "oh you're Japanese blah blah blah" Let's say for example an ethnically Korean who has an American passport, born and raised in the US. And when he debut as a KPop idol and happens to be in US promoting their song, interviewers are like "your English is phenomenal" like 😂 yo

This is insanely relatable to me. I'm half-Japanese and half-white and grew up in Japan, but since I look Hispanic no one assumes I'm Asian or Japanese, so I do the same thing as him haha. I totally get it. I have no shame in being proud of my heritage. Whenever I speak Japanese to people here in the states who are Japanese, they're always caught off-guard by my pronunciation and it's funny to see their brains short circuit for a moment.

@@astronormi I think what a lot of people don't realize is that anime like One Piece is everywhere in Japan. It's been on forever. The manga is still going on. Everybody knows it. Every year there's some sort of One Piece collaboration with some convenience store chain. You can walk into any 7-11 and they have the newest volumes laid out close to the hot foods and the magazines. If the theme song hits the charts, it's played in random shopping spaces like malls and stores. Every summer, Universal Studios Japan has a One Piece live show. One Piece isn't some niche thing, nor is it some franchise relegated to just TV or just the movie theatre. It is highkey unavoidable, and you may not watch the show or read the manga, but you know what the characters/art style looks like. You've got to be living under a rock to not recognize characters like Tony Tony Chopper and Luffy and Nami. It's kinda like how it feels like everybody in the US has watched SpongeBob at some point in their lives. Not all Japanese people like anime, but the questions being asked to the cast are often "were you fans of One Piece before you got the role?" or "did you know about One Piece before you got the role?" The latter question probably feels particularly annoying to someone like Mackenyu because, if you live in Japan for long enough, you probably know about One Piece. If you were a kid/adolescent when it first aired, then you were probably watching it just like every other kid in the country, as if it was some version of Sunday morning cartoons.

I relate to this. I'm a halfie like him but I grew up in Thailand (half English) but I also speak in an "international" accent which sounds vaguely American because of all the pop culture I consumed growing up. I speak both languages fluently but people always get surprised when I say that I'm Thai first and foremost and they'll say "You don't sound Thai" or "You don't look Thai" or be surprised that I cheer for the Thai national team or consume Thai media and I hardly relate to my British side since I've literally never lived there.
