I like to keep 1 nut or block tight on the table to catch the torque with bigger drill bits. Either the part or the vice contacts it so it doesn’t spin.

My first drill press (table) was cast poorly and it was impossible to get a T-nut in the T-slot.

My drill press doesn't even have T slots. It's C clamps and some janky vise usually. Or the milling vise from my lathe. Then, to line everything up just perfect, there's usually some spinning of the table and swinging it around to get everything just right.

There is the proper way to do things then there is the right way.

I used to usually just hold stock, but after accidentally becoming a helicopter pilot a few times, breaking bits, or ripping my hand open, I try to at use at least one welding clamp to discourage stuff from moving, and more if it's an important project. My last shop we had a Harbor Freight milling machine vise that sat on the table, and it slick. I need to scheme how to get one at my current job, but I am out helicopter ground support most of the time, only get to do shop projects between projects lol

Sometimes if you don't have the stuff bolted down, you'll get grabbing when things move. Also for drilling at the press' capacity, say 1/2", you really need rigidity. Ruin a part and you learn why you should make the effort to bolt it down if possible.

    Same thing happened with me.

A lot of the time, when using relatively small drills either on heavy parts with a lot of inertia or held in a heavy vice, I don't use any T-bolts, the drill will either spin loose in the chuck or just snap. For slightly bigger drills and parts with less inertia, a T-bolt with a washer keeps the part from rotating or lifting over the bolt. When using huge morse taper drills or doing repeatable work in a vise, I bolt it down

I have slots, but usually free hand hold the vice, and if i really think its gonna grab or be a problem, ill drop a bolt in the slot that the vice can butt up against...

I keep material removal rates low on a drill press. If I need to machine many reamed holes, I'll drill them on a mill and finish them with a reamer on a drill press. If I need to machine a clearance hole opposing a threaded hole for a split clamp, the drill press is where I do it.

Oh im guily of this although my drill.press is on the weaker end so if it bings the belt just slips

I know very well that a drill press can make things fly.

But because you learned how to do it the hard way you can do it the easy way or the hard way when others can’t

I have a gear driven drill press no belts. Is it still a good idea to float the vice? I have never successfully flown a helicopter.

It's the wrong type of drill press. Need a production table drill press.
