Machining, Heavy Metal Turning On A Mini Lathe

Ойын-сауық

The Harbor Freight Mini Lathe or Hobby Lathe is a fun little machine to have in your Home work Shop. Today I'm going to try to Turn, Face and Drill some pretty tuff stuff. 4140 prehard steel. Lets see if the little lathe can do it. My mentor once told me " It's not the machine , It's the person in front of it " So with that said, Lets try and machine some steel. These parts are for the Burke No.22 Drill Press project. I hope you enjoy this video. If you like what you see please Subscribe and then click the bell so you can see all my videos.

Granted turning 4140 on the mini lathe is a challenge, maybe a little lube may help with extremely small depths of cut. Might work.

Now after your answer to my post, Mr @GlennNow I came back a few days later and saw in normal speed with sound and this part took the time to be.. this small machines are funny and usefull, but you need TIME to spare. Skill and patience must be in the machinist DNA. Congrats.

Hello Enrico, These little machines are fun to do hobby work on but it takes a lot of time. You're right. It took me about 10 hours to shoot the video and another about 15 hours to edit. If I posted a video for as long as it really takes No one would watch. I try to make videos to entertain people no matter how long it takes. After 52 years as a Machinist making parts are easy. Making videos of making parts take time. I hope you enjoyed my video. Thanks for commenting.

Nice to know that you like the interaction here, do you know about time lapse recording? Sugestion to ease the editing. Once you adjust the lathe to run looooog cuts go time lapse, and we can see your entire work. We like to see all !! @@GlennNowOnKZread

I appreciate the experience you bring to your videos and that you do it on a mini-lathe. My equipment is at the hobbyist level. What insert did you use? Will annealing help to turn harder steel? I've tried turn a short piece of hydraulic cylinder rod, but it was tough going! Thanks so much for sharing.

I love Hobby Machining. I like to show everyone that it's not only fun but you can do just about anything you set your mind to on these little machines. The insert is just a standard coated insert for steel. It came with the tool I bought from Travers Tool Co. I found it on line. www.travers.com It was called Akuma 3/8" shank turning tool with insert. CCMT2(1.5)1-mp1 CT25M . I hope this info helps. Annealing, Yes it would help.

I never use insert cutters on any heavy cuts on my mini lathe. The best is EXTREMELY sharp HSS tools. Get the gibs as tight as you can manage. With HSS you can take shallow cuts.

It sounds like you have a plan that works for you. I mostly use HSS cutters for soft material like plastic. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@GlennNowOnKZread It's not about preference :) Insert cutters are known to require larger bite hence more heft and motor power from the lathe. I really do enjoy how much joy you have in solving the limitations of that machine. I watched it through and through. You said you haven't done any modifications to your machine and mentioned bearings. Please before you do that do inspect the motor mount first. In some cheapos it's attrocious, not in materials but in design. If you could call it design, that is...

@@Tome4kkkk I did finally upgrade the spindle bearings to tapered roller bearings. Really helped. If you go to my channel you'll see that I am in the middle of putting in a bigger motor. It's a hobby and is all in fun. The bearings helped with the finish, I'm hoping the motor will help with bigger cuts.
