I just rebooted my computer and it looked completely different from when I bought it. The previous owner must have did all the updates but they vanished after I did the factory reset. Grateful ! My 2012 mac mini HDD was somehow corrupted due to dual booting Linux, couldn't boot MacOS. So from recovery I reinstalled macOS X 10.8.5 in its partition, but couldnt upgrade from OS X. This saved me.

Hello! I followed your steps. I downloaded capitan 10.11.6 onto my Mac. I just got burned on buying an older computer, knowing it'd have limitations, but only after being reassured everything was upgradeable, but I have not been able to upgrade anything, or even install Firefox, or even load the most basic of websites; Safari is completely useless, and both it and Chrome are blocking 'safe' websites, including Apple (!!). The computer also insists it can't load certain websites because the date/time are incorrect, but the date/time are NOT incorrect... This El Capitan install from 10.8.5 - from Launchpad specifically (only) - WORKED. Finally able to access Apple updates, currently updating again and hopefully will be able to get it reasonably functional with other basic applications (like Firefox). Thank you so much.

Worked just like in the video. My out of date 10.8.5 made is so I could barely use anything. Did this on two hard drives (always smart to back everything up just in case)... The el capitan version is nice and runs faster. If I end up needing to upgrade to one of the newer ones later I'll just do the same. Thanks.
