Can you use OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in 2023? Nearly 15 years later...

Ғылым және технология

OS X Snow Leopard remains to this day the most loved version of macOS. I figured the best way to see if I was wrong was to buy a physical of Snow Leopard and install it on my Mac Pro 2008... in 2023.
The goal of this video is to see if OS X 10.6 is usable in the modern era as it was released nearly 15 years ago, with it's earliest beta being from October of 2008. I go on some tangents. I can't tell if these are interesting or just me wasting people's time. Let me know if they're entertaining.
OS X 10.6, also known as Snow Leopard, is the seventh major release of Apple's macOS operating system, launched on August 28, 2009. It is hailed for its focus on performance, stability, and under-the-hood improvements, rather than introducing groundbreaking new features. Snow Leopard brings significant refinements to system architecture and technologies, making it more efficient, faster, and with a smaller memory footprint. Key enhancements include full 64-bit support, Grand Central Dispatch for optimizing multicore processor utilization, OpenCL for harnessing the power of GPUs, and a new version of Safari with increased speed and HTML5 support. Snow Leopard's emphasis on optimization and compatibility make it a pivotal release that lays the groundwork for future macOS versions.

I didn't mention this in the video but all the browsers are forked versions of FireFox as it was last supported browser and I'm pretty sure all are using shims and polyfills to achieve modern compatibility. This means they'll never be able to render as fast as native browsers on a modern OS. If I were to use the 2008 Mac Pro with the exact same hardware on Monterey, and run speed benchmarks for JS compute, almost certainly modern FireFox, Chrome or Safari would be faster.
I cut the explainer on Javascript as I already had enough tangents in this video.
FireFox also went through an entire engine rewrite with Quantum in 2018/2019 to modernize it, so even if features were back ported from newer FireFox, there's a dead end with Quantum. However, I've been proven wrong before...

I didn't mind the later versions, where I feel like the UI took the biggest hit was Big Sur. It gives it more of a Googley design and the painfully uniformity of the icons Apple has been on for awhile seems like a UX negative. I liked having unique shapes to icons as it was yet another way to quickly identify them and establish personality.

I do make money but thus far I’ve continuously spent more on it than made. The analogy is use is I view it like someone into arts and crafts, you can make beautiful quilts and sell them but the point isn’t to make money. It’s a nice bonus that enables you to continue the hobby. If I were to make like $1000 a month it’d go right back into the hobby(build a NAS, get retro hardware etc) but at that point it’d be self funding. Right now I make like a quarter of that.

I was also not able to play my favorite Sims 2 game anymore. Instead, I was told I would’ve had to buy the game from the App Store, which I didn’t want to do. Honestly if anyone wants a similarly setup operating system with an equally sleek design, better compatibility with modern software and hardware I'd definitely take a look (my OS of choice atm is garuda dr460nized, but there are many other''s which share these characteristics). Elementary OS is also a good option that goes for a mac like look and feel, though I don't have as much experience with it, it's obviously inspired by mac OS.

Snow Leopard was definitely the best OSX for a long time. I avoided upgrading to the followups for as long as I could. It’s possible to run several legacy versions of OSX using QEMU and Sheepshaver. I’m not sure if Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (or Sorbet Leopard) is fully supported right now, but it should be supported eventually. The advantage of emulation is that you can use those old Mac apps and games that don’t run anywhere else, but then switch out to use your modern browser. Of course not everything works perfectly under emulation, so it’s best if you can get an old Mac.

I would not want to run Snow Leopard as my daily driver, too little support, so many security vulnerabilities, also I'd check on the OpenCore legacy patcher (OCLP)'s support for your computer, if it supports it Monterey tends to run rather well on unsupported hardware. I had my Mac Pro 2008 running Monterey and it felt pretty damn zippy but again, it is a dual 4-core CPU Mac Pro 2008 with 8 GB of RAM and an SSD with GeForce 760 GPU. While not impressive, it's a lot higher speced than most computers of that era.

Also if you intend to use OpenCore as the primary boot loader, you'll want to install the UEFI compatible versions. As far as React dev, almost computer from 2012 onward will kick the 3,1 in the teeth as single core speeds are far far more important for transpiling, especially if you end up in some gnarly node env that React is likely hooked on. • @dmug

This is an easy one to answer: It's because you can't run old OS Xs on newer hardware. The last gen 10.6 Macs supported were 2010 as they shipped with Snow Leopard. To run the OS on newer hardware, it'd require driver support which Apple does not bring to the old hardware. Also, with the frequent architecture changes to the OS, porting over drivers between OS versions is a monumental task, see OpenCore. It isn't unfeasible but the desire to run an older operating system to no benefit on newer hardware means there's been zero effort.
