And Apple should be held accountable because they put TOO MUCH price margin for every spec increase. For example for every 8GB RAM or 256GB SSD increase it cost you 200 bucks, that means if you want to choose 16GB RAM and 512GB storage you need to pay extra 400 bucks. That margin should be at least 50% lower than the current one, as the true cost of 8GB RAM + 256GB SSD combined are only like 40 bucks, a mere 10% of the Apple's price

  • @Spoonfed78

@@sihamhamda47 accountability comes from the consumer, and in the case of Apple they know they have a user base that is either loyal like a cult, or that have been rounded up into a stockyard. Their users have the power but as there's one brand and so limited options in that ecosystem, and the devices are more painful to use with other brands the friction is high and users literally just bend over. Many have the money and don't care, but in a way it's a personal choice of treatment acceptance. Apple the way Apple treats its committed customers to all other aspects and people in life and most would judge this as not ok. Yet here we are. Apple know this, which makes the cycle continue. There's so many other tech options out that give more freedom and interoperability that it's disappointing that Apple gets rewarded for this. Literally we'd be using 4.5 inch phone's still if Apple had it's way

You can forget both, thus type of RAM must be close to the CPU and GPU because it's lose a significant amount of signal power with distance, and by the way it's just use way less power like the replaceable, so do you think it's a good trade if you sacrifice the power consumption and even the transfer speed? (So you lose a few hours of battery time and also your 400GB/s will fall back to 40-50GB/s) And for the storage, they have their own made unique type RAID, which is controlled by the SoC, and for any random storage they can't do the same, not to mention the 4 nand chip use 25% of power each, so 100% in total but in 4 pieces, on 4 different location, if you push that power to a single storage than even the heat generation there is 4x more, which is required a cooler ot at least a heat sink on the SSD, and that is just a lot of extra problem an even wasted energy if you want to cool the storage properly.

@@TamasKiss-yk4st As for the RAM, may I introduce you to LPCAMM. And for storage, being able to replace an SSD is worth so much more than the speed of a mass storage device for most humans. Even if they are not techy, repair shops can recover customers data way easier and as an added benefit to users, you dont have to buy an entire new device, just because you picked up video editing as a new hobby. RAM I can somewhat understand the rationale Apple provides, but in combination with the mass storage being soldered, its just an obvious bs-reason to be able to make more money.

My wishlist for new macbook: - make lighter devices (it's possible lots of PC laptop are lighter without sacrificing durability) - include a USB A port - starts at 16gb ram all model - free m2 ssd slot in addition to OS ssd so users can add memory themselves. And apple still keeps his own integrated ssd for security, speed etc. - DC dimming option for mini led or oled display, for PWM sensitive users - more media engine - bring back the touchbar on top of functions row (basically, have both). Touchbar is actually useful when used with software like Better Touch Tool that allow customizing it. With BTT you can create powerful macros that can be easily activated from the touchbar with no need to remember extra keyboard shortcuts.

Great video Josh & Team. I returned to macOS after 30 years w the 16” M1 MacBook Pro & for my uses (productivity-great display, no fan noise) it is great. Although I am not price sensitive, I am gouge sensitive. Apple makes great products however as you said “Apple is Profits over People”. Totally agree with RAM & storage issues; a major profit margin boost for Apple. Somehow Apple fans cannot see the reality in Apple’s business model: Apple has a long term profit margin twice that of most oil companies, who most people hate! That video of Tim Cook & company w “Mother Earth”, coming from the company manufacturing the least repairable products in the industry was far more cynical than the iPad latest crush video which generated backlash. If Apple wanted to be Green, they would explain to customers their devices need to be larger, w thicker bezels etc, to make them more repairable. In the end, all of us (including myself) are responsible for enabling their behavior. I look forward to QCOM Snapdragon laptops pressuring Apple; we will all benefit from the competition.

We shall see in three weeks how AI will improve things, but having seen some of the features, it does improve performance on certain tasks substantially. They’re guaranteed to make money off the people who just have to have the newest tech, as well as enticing some people to the m3 chip with slightly better performance. BUT, the m3 didn’t outperform the m2 so much that the m2 stopped selling altogether. I have a feeling the m4 chips are going to be the next real iteration of Apple’s lineup, the m3 was just a bridge to keep people happy, bring in revenue, and test the waters.

Apple has a different approach to RAM and storage. They want the fastest with low latency, and soldered storage and RAM provide that. This is more so because storage is used for swap, which is best with a low latency. Intel has switched chiefly to soldered RAM, such as LPDDR5X, the fastest RAM that does not come in a modular design. In 2025, we should see some LPCAMM2 RAM, which is not modular per se; if you upgrade from 16GB to 32GB, you cannot just add 16GB; you must buy a 32GB board. So, upgrading to save money will be more expensive and probably cheaper when ordering directly from the OEM. As for storage, you can buy what you need or use an external Thunderbolt drive.

Further more, "just buy what you need" argument is stupid when apple is pricing an extra 512gb ssd module that they buy for 20$ at 200$ for each upgrade. The upgrade costs are outrageous, and the external thunderbold drive is only a good idea when the laptop has sufficient storage for a day to day operation, aka 512 to 1TB minimum. 256gb and 8gb in 2024 is just insulting when the upgrades cost 200$ each.

But if the base was 16GB/512GB, as that is $1500, it would be unfair for me and tens of millions of other base MacBook owners to have to pay that extra $400-500, especially as it would add no value for us. I bet all consumers would be happy to pay an extra 50$ (accounting for apple's profit) to not have a gimped laptop that will start slowing down and running out of storage in a few years. But apple would never do that, creating a need for expensive 200$ upgrades and planned obsolescence is too profitable for them. Also comparing to chromebook is questionable argument at best, have you seen how much RAM a modern browser needs? even Safari does it now.

The benefit of Touch ID is that it’s a more deliberate way of authentication: you have to actively press the touch sensor and hold. Whereas Face ID almost happens instantly without the user being proactive. In a way, it’s “too good”. There is no real user consent anymore. The moment FaceID is triggered to show up, it authenticates the person right away.

Justifying a MacBook upgrade would be soooo much easier if the base config was better (RAM, Storage) or the Upgrade prices would be in the real of affordability. 2TB for more than 400$? Really? There cheap 2TB ones with 5000+ MBIT R/W and I get that Apple wants their margins, but Really? What the hell? IM on a M1 Pro 32GB model And with game porting toolkit id be looking at a M4 Max 32+GB (for playing around with AI). But then I look at the price and a Mobile 4090 doesn't look that bad anymore all of a sudden... yikes. A Asus ROG Zehyprus G14 with 4090 is the same price in Austria. Bt I can probably wait a couple months - like the M4 will probably take - and get it much cheaper. 4k € is a lo to spend for just 32GB/1TB with No upgradeability. So 100% Agree that either base configs and/or upgrade prices need to improve. Since we all know the upgrading those won't ever happen.

With a SSD docking station (you need more & better ports anyway, regardless), you can get a hot-swappable SSD. So if you're stuck deciding, spend your cash on the RAM... 18->36, since you have no option to ever increase it. If you had the docking station with 1TB User Selectable SSD encasement, you can keep your MBP 512GB relatively clean, and store heavy files in your dock.

After seeing this video I think it might be best to wait... But a cheaper windows or even and older model Mac for now for around £1000 and wait to see what the M4s are going to be like. I have a main pc desktop rig so really the MacBook is for making music in the garden or in bed/ on the sofa and not at my desk all the time. Teardowns show that the RAM modules in the M4 on the iPad Pro are 6GB, although only 4GB are active. This suggests that this will be an M4 design and that we should expect 12GB as the new base and 24GB as the second tier on the M4 base models. Apple has installed 6GB of modules on the M3 Pro and M3 Max, which are cheaper. I think a 12GB base would satisfy most of the complaints, and 24GB as the alternative would be suitable for most ultrabook use cases, especially with swap. I have yet to hear about base storage, and there are conflicting signals here. But, I wonder if Apple will address base RAM and storage in the same cycle. I doubt the chassis will be redesigned, and OLED is not due until the M5 (I hope that changes as the M4 has a Tandem OLED co-processor). So there are a few changes, mainly moving away from the stop-gap N3B to N3E, which is a significant jump in architecture.

12gb should smooth out the entry level. Considering MacOS uses 6gb on the 8gb models and nearly 8gb on the 16gb models. Apple needs to address that because watching the 8gb models struggle and stutter when lightly multi-tasking doesn't seem very "premium"
