More and more people want a fast graphics card for their early-2009 or mid-2010 Mac Pro, especially because the new macOS Mojave requires a metal compatible GPU to be installed.
When I bought my used Mac Pro 4.1 last year I put in the smaller RX560 with 2GB of video memory, however, I found that as my video projects grew in size this was too small.
I noticed that iMovie would constantly read data from my SSD and move it into the GPU memory, only to dump it out shortly afterward to load in another part of my project.
While everything worked fine I wanted to reduce unnecessary read/write operations, making my video editing experience as fast a possible.
My testing shows that there is a nice improvement with this video card upgrade, partly because of the larger memory, but also because of the faster processor, and I assume the difference in lane width.
While the old RX560 was only a 6x lane card with a 128-bit memory bus, the faster RX580 is a 16x lane card with a 256-bit memory bus.
In my opinion, there is no "one best graphics card" for the Mac Pro, but rather it depends on your goal.
For example, many users can also be happy with an RX560, because it costs less and draws less power.
If on the other hand, you plan more demeaning tasks, such as regular video editing, or gaming, a more powerful RX580 or even a Vega card will be better.
You should also pay special attention to your video cards power requirements, and select the right GPU power cable.
Case A: Use the "mini 6pin to 6pin" for a total of 150 watts available ➜ geni.us/gBZvb
Case B: Use the "dual mini 6pin to 8pin" for a total of 225 watts ➜ geni.us/5ozmi
Case A - Low Power Cards ###
• Sapphire Pulse RX560 (11267-20) = 75 Watt ➜ geni.us/496emt
• MSI Aero RX560 (ITX OC) = 60 Watt ➜ geni.us/5V0VD3
Case B - High Power Cards ###
• Sapphire Special Edition RX580 (11265-21) = 250 Watt*
• Sapphire Nitro+ RX580 (11265-01) = 235 Watt*
• Sapphire Pulse RX580 (11265-05) = 225 Watt ➜ geni.us/rX6mx
*Always go to your card manufactures website, and use the exact model number (SKU) to identify the power draw. Because even if the card has the same chip, power draw can sometimes vary due to the card's memory, and or chip clock speed.

Hey there, Sebastian, thanks for sharing this great experience. I have a 2010 mac pro (8core) and it still goes hard but I have been thinking about upgrading more. One thing I did early on was add an mSata card with striped 500GB msata for editing and I also run the OS from another slot. It goes well. When you upgrade as you state in your video, prepare to be very pleased! I think I have a 3gb graphics card and I can edit 4k on this old beast but only shorter sequences and then it chugs. I would be interested to upgrade to the 8GB card in your video but also toying with other options. One thing with this tower (and the reason I have not upgraded yet) is I run 6TB drives in three internal slots and then removed the CD and have that SATA cable hanging out externally so I can attach SSDs from my Shogun video recorder directly to the computer. It's a great setup. Bypassing no USB 3 on my system.

Is it possible? What about the 680, is that a mac edition, or I can use a regular one. Do I need o flash it? I'm a tad ignorant of such a matter and need to learn more. And i have a problem with a PHILIPS TV LCD 10 years old that i use like monitor by HDMI ports. But with the RX580 the screen become green and pink sometimes. The TV firmware is upgraded. A solution ? Perhaps the TV is too old because it works good with the original graphic card.

Under normal desktop use, the GPUs normally draw very little power, even video editing and export is quite reasonable, only time cards draw full power is gaming, and then also only if you render all possible frames.

Saw this on a forum about slots for the card: I believed slot 2 provide better cooling as well because the air can flow through both upper and lower side. However, in my test, the card actually has better cooling in slot 1. Not sure why, may be because warm air rise, so the higher the slot, the warm the air the graphic card will intake, but this is the test result (the test was done with a PNY XL8 1080Ti). Or may be because all 4 HDD bays are occupied. Therefore, too little space above the card for the warmed air to escape.

Could that discrepancy in memory usage be similar to how cores are used? I've noticed Logic Pro does a similar thing with CPU cores. It will be low, low, low, and then when I EXPORT or do certain functions, especially export all tracks, it will blast the cores to %100. My theory is the programs are not utilizing cores (or boost) well, or it can do all it can (since other options are frozen) during these functions.

I upgraded my Mac Pro 5.1 to an AMD Radeon RX570 and the seller claims that the only thing that separates it from RX580 is speed. Is that right? Well, when I installed the videocard I had to remove my extensions-card with 4 USB 3.0-ports because it was so extremely tight between the new videocard and the pci-e-card, only a few millimeters to the fan. I decided to remove my second SSD-disc from another slot and reinstalled the pci-e-card, but now I don’t know how where to install the SSD. I have Catalina on it, and one of the reasons to change to RX570 was to be able to work in Catalina. And yes, I now have boot screen in 4K 60 Hz and displayport is working in Catalina but it also gave me other problems. Can I have something so tight to the videocard without more trouble? This old computer should be retired immediately. It has 10 years old technique and I don’t know why I keep spending time and money on it. Yes I do know. I can’t afford a new Mac Pro.

Apple uses a custom BIOS on there stock GPUs, all aftermarkte cards dont support the grey bootup screen, filevault needs to be disabled in case you are using it.

The Mac Pro 4.1 and 5.1 (Early 2009 ~ Mid 2012) doesn't officially support Catalina anymore, and while there seem to be some workarounds if in question I would stick with Mojave.

Do you have to install Mojave to utilize this card? I've done the firmware update and went to high sierra but I don't have a desire to go to Mojave quite yet.
