MABDR Section 1 - Riding the Mid Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route! BMW R1150GS and R1200GS ADV!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In September 2020 my good friends Trevor and Matt joined me for an epic adventure - tackling the Mid Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route! The MABDR covers 1,080 miles from Damascus, VA to Lawrenceville, PA, right on the New York border. The route is designed for adventure bikes and dual sports, with a good mix of gravel, dirt, two track, and some fun pavement connecting it all.
I'll be uploading a video for each section - so subscribe for more!

That's a beautiful driving video. The valley in the mountains is beautiful, too. It's a fantastic course to explore. I like the single course in the woods the most. Have a happy day. 👍👍👍🤙🤙🤙👌
Love the older GS’s
Great to see a new upload can’t wait for section 2. Thanks for bringing us along
The section where you were going between the rocks is known as a cut. You were on an old railroad bed. Thanks for posting these videos. 👍
Excellent ride! I enjoyed tagging along. Nice touch with the horses. They will remember that courtesy, always good to have folks have good thoughts of motorcyclists, really helps with relations, we are riding through their communities.
Awesome to see you upload!!!! I'm planning to do MABDR this year, so funny to see you post this!

Headed out tomorrow for MABDR! thanks for the inspiration 👍
A great 40 minutes of escapism! Looking forward to more. That spot At 12:06 looks like a "cut" done with black powder in the mid 1800s not to far from me.
Thanks for pointing out your Trailmax Missions. I have a fresh set on my 1250GS and have been wondering how they would be offroad. Guess I'll have to give it a try.
Thank you for the sub Reuben! Your video series was one of the inspirations for me to do this route as a thru ride! As well as record my journey journey and create my own KZread series! Thank You!!!

Awesome, thank you! Glad you enjoyed the series and got out there to enjoy the MABDR yourself! Looking forward to following along!
Sp excited to have found this video so I can see the shape of the road. Thank you for sharing! We are heading to Damascus area this week and going to try to do Part 1 with some other family vacation plans. We are hoping to eventually do the entire route someday.
The Bob Ross of Adv Riding
I just found your channel while searching for MABDR stuff. Your video coverage was epic! Really am enjoying watching the ride. I am hoping to do it soon! I may have questions if you are willing. Count me subscribed!
I ran the entire Blue ridge parkway on a FJ 1100 years ago. Nothing quite as enjoyable on a bike as that ride. I plan on doing it again on my ZRX 1200 soon. Be safe! Have fun! I bought my ZRX after watching your videos!
You started off in my area. If you ever come back in the winter months you can ride the Virginia horse trail. Part of it starts right in Damascus. Follows near the Appalachian Trail

Talking about Iron Mountain? Our same group tackled that quite a few years ago - a very memorable trip for us!
Listening to your bike making me miss my 1150 Rockster I had for a couple years. Tractor!
Nice ride!
Stumbled across your channel and glad I did. I like the long videos, I watch them on my 70 inch TV. I don’t watch regular TV anymore. I thought it was cool that you met Trevor at the same QT my ride group meets at to our Mt rides. I live about 20 mins from there. Looking forward to the other videos in this series. Thanks for sharing, looking forward to more. Be Healthy Be Safe.
Love the R1150 gs!
The longer your videos are, the happier I am!!!
Awesome footage! I need to get off my third point of contact and make this ride. Be safe.
Lucky you! Nice adventure. To many more. But that Kawa tho, from back in the day, was also a mean machine.
Ride on!!
Attack of the killer spatula!
Great video. What’s the model of your tank bag?
That was the 2nd time you were on the Appalachian Trail. You were on it as you traveled through Damascus also.
My '07 GS's low fuel warning happens at exactly two gallons in the tank, and when stating I've got zero miles fuel left, has one gallon still in the tank, which is what the specs say is the correct reserve amount, so quite accurate.
how long had you been adv riding before you made this trip?
Great stuff, what helmet camera do you use? Audio is great.
Holy shit that’s the QT in Denver! Aye that’s awesome
Thanks for another fun episode. Do you remember about how long (in time) it took for Section 1? Thanks again.
1) what makes Damascus a really neat little town ? .. 2) do you carry extra gas with you ?
I love longer vids as well. Netflix replacement.
How do you record the audio to your gopro?

Wired mic in my helmet (purple panda). Seems to work fairly well.
What's the story on your 1150GS? Have been thinking about buying a new GS but I'm curious what your thoughts are on your GS. Would love to know how long you've had it and what you've needed to do with it so far?

I have a 2002 standard 1150GS. I've had to replace the internal fuel lines and filter, the external fuel line connectors and the hall sensor. Love my GS. 100,008 kms (65,000 miles) and still going strong.
Hi I'm an ADV rider also based out of Charlotte. I am doing the MABDR north-to-south starting Sept. 18th. Maybe we could ride together some time. Have fun.

I hope your trip was awesome! Maybe we'll cross paths on the streets of CLT sometime! I get out to the SoMoto bike night and Assembly group rides fairly regularly.
Man how do you get the route? I have a old gps that may be too dated. I live in Salisbury area so I’m not far from you.

You can download the tracks from the BDR website. It's a TRACK, not a ROUTE - so you essentially just get a line to follow on your GPS - it will not give you turn by turn directions. If your GPS is older, the track files are likely to be too long or have too many points. I tried to load it on an older eTrex I have as backup and it wouldn't take it. I use a Garmin Zumo 396. Good luck!
The bare minimum with full sized lifted street bike with knobbies :)
Really enjoyed the content. I'm planning to buy a bike soon and begin adventures like this. What gps are you running?

@@NitroRoo Thanks again, and if you visit VA, maybe we can cross paths, air space lol.. on a R44.! Stay safe and your vids have replaced netflix.
I don't understand the concept of owning a big CC bike and putting around at 10mph all day as being fun!?

Y'all is way over packed for 1 week
All I hear in Charlotte are sirens, horns and gunshots not related to hunting. You mock Appalachian people, then admire the beauty.. Our poverty cant be hidden away from sight, especially when you are driving past rural homesteads, many shared for generations.

@@NitroRoo slightly offended by the "I hear banjo's" momentarily across the screen, but otherwise I enjoyed the series. You seem like a nice enough fellow, I'm sure it was meant as a joke, but there are some poor, ignorant, filthy people everywhere if one looks hard enough. We are lucky to get to ride past their grief in pleasure. That being said, ride on, stay safe keep making content. Cheers,ed
