Maastricht is a unique city in Netherlands because it’s at the southernmost point of the country, way down by Belgium, by Germany, close to France even, and so the culture down here is little bit different than you find in the north and the west of the Netherlands.
It’s a very cosmopolitan city. It’s got that typical pedestrians zone with many little lanes just for people, no cars allowed, a lot of restaurants and cafés, there is the historic sites, the churches, there’s an old fortification and medieval walls around part of the city, and there’s a variety of other touring activities.
The main pedestrian street is Grote Staat. It goes right to the heart of Maastricht and it’s all for pedestrian, it's bicycles, people walking their dog, people out shopping. This evening it's about 7 PM we're getting twilight already. It's a Thursday, shops are open until nine on Thursdays, otherwise generally closing at 6 PM. So Thursday night is a great time to be out walking. And this is September, late September, the weather is unusually warm. For this whole month it’s been just perfect so that might be a the time for you to consider coming to visit the Netherlands.
It's an area for pedestrians and bicycles, for baby carriages, for people walking their dogs, but no cars loud here in this central shopping area of historic Maastricht.
It’s a pretty extensive zone that goes for dozens of blocks and with two main squares that are connected by the lovely pedestrian lanes. Naturally most of the shops are clothing stores but there’s a variety of other kind, there is the art galleries, sundries, there are cafés, there are always the bakeries, and the bar on the corner, there’s a few modern shopping malls tucked away in here as well too, beautiful Maastricht

Born and raised in this beautiful city, proud to have Maastricht as the place of birth on my ID. The city centre is stunning and Wyck is also lovely, but there is more! On the east side, you can visit Heer, now part of Maastricht, but it used to be a village in itself! Very nice old buildings and close to the beautiful nature and another village called Bemelen. We have the most stunning nature around Maastricht, I am a very lucky girl to be able to keep my horse in that area and make stunning trail rides along the old marl caves and the stunning Juliana quarry. Or ride in the beautiful mountains and forests! If you love nature, history, the city life, shopping, music, eating, drinking or parties; Maastricht will be perfect for you! We've got it all here!

This is a great video. I'm going to Maastricht coming mid december for the Christmas Fair. I'll be staying for three days. This video really helps to decide what other sights I will be seeing when I'm there. I'm a keen walker and I love history so I think I will enjoy myself.

Great video! :) I'm living in Maastricht currently and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it! Small fun fact: You can tell that the video has been recorded a couple of months or a year ago (either February since the weather was as good as in the video then or maybe late summer last year) since the wall in the city park unfortunately collapsed a while ago and is under renovation now.

Nothing stays the same. The last time we visited, a long-time favorite purveyor of fine local food items had just closed! We had planned ahead, just a few months earlier, to be certain to shop there, as we were staying at a local short-term rental property.

Yes, the bookshop is one of the finest I have seen Dennis, great place. Next time you get there, pay a visit to the Basilica of St Servatius, it has a great collection of church treasures some of them dating back to 387 ad. Visited there a few years ago, time for another visit soon.

We LOVE Maastricht. It is also the 'hometown' of concertmaster, Andre Rieu! Throughout the Netherlands, Maastricht is famous as a place with a keen appreciation for civilized living...and its residents are known for having a 'quirky' sense of humor! When first I knew it, Maastricht was the European Air Traffic Control Center. It is true that the city is a technology center in addition to everything else. We last spent several days there...and we didn't begin to see some of the points of interest covered in this fine video. Given my interest, this program went straight to my LIKED videos.
I went there twice for a quick visit. It's charming. Nice to see your video. Too bad it wasn't aired before our visit. Great work.

if you go a bit north to geleen or sittard, you can get from belgium -> netherlands -> germany in like 10 minutes on a moped, it's like ~6 kilometers wide from border to border over there :)

Yes, I show in an upcoming movie how easy it is to take the bus to Aachen, Germany, just 50 minutes away, home to one of the world's great architectural treasures, the Aachen Dom (Cathedral) built by Charlemagne 1,200 years ago and in perfect condition today.

Some of my ancestors came from this area, so I'm curious. Just went through on a train once, but didn't know of the connection at that time. Rutten, Narinx are all I recall right now.

The volunteers in the red jackets (05:20min) are not from the toursit officie, they are civilian Police volunteers, ofcourse they will help you, but they have nothing to do with the tourist office. The water mill does grind flower so now and than, but not for the bakery. The bakery buys its flower from another water mill in the provence.
the wilhelmina brug was exctually the sintservaes but for the rest a reallll good video

Deze titel word door meerdere steden geclaimd, Nijmegen is een aantal eeuwen niet bewoond geweest, Maastricht is wel continu bewoond geweest. Ook word dit gebaseerd op Romeinse stadsrechten, als je naar middeleeuwse stadsrechten kijkt is Maastricht weer ouder. Er zijn geen officiële richtlijnen waar een stad aan moet voldoen om deze titel te claimen dus het zal altijd een discussie blijven. Het is maar net welke definitie je toepast. Voor mij zal dit altijd Maastricht zijn aangezien de Romeinen vanuit het zuiden kwamen ;)

v m welke eeuwen was Noviomagus niet bewoond!? In de tijd van Bizantijnen?? In die tijd was Nijmegen bewoond door belangrijke Romeinen en zelfs wat Germaanse afstammeling!! En Nijmegen heeft ook al sinds circa 36v.chr ‘stadsrechten’ met zelf huizen die buiten de muren stonden! Er is zelfs een woonplaats van keizer Trajanus

When did you film this? I see Veolia buses which have been gone since end 2016 and the V&D went bankrupt in 2015. Hell the Hudson’s Bay which came after it in that building is going away in the Netherlands soon. Also it is one of the oldest, but not the oldest.
The most beautiful city in The Netherlands in my opinion.
I'm moving to the Netherlands when I retire from my job in 3 1/2 years. Not sure where I will be living but I will put Maastricht on the list of possible cities.
My wife and I, we will be visiting this city on the 20th or the twenty first.

The city wall was not only build against the French, it was also build against the Spanish and also Holland. Maastricht is official part of the Netherlands from 1839. Before that time Maastricht was a freedom. And sometimes occupied. The first people from Holland who occupied Maastricht was in 1632. In 1673 it became French. After the Belgian revolution 1830/1839 it became Dutch. That is the reason why real people from Maastricht don't like it as you say that they are from Holland. Holland are 2 provinces from the Netherlands.
