This is the stuff the charlatans imitate, but Ma was the real deal. There is no "medicine show" in this vid, only real push hands with deep internal technique exhibited by one of the very best to ever practice this art.

Yes DPGDPG I have to thank you for this (and your other vids). Master Liang was an amazing man of the internal. The community is greatly diminished without his presence.

The only true internal master we've seen in the movies is Yu Chenghui. (Yu Hai's mantis in 1982 Shaolin Temple also:)

You're critizising Ma Yueh Liang's Taijiquan. Why not do the same with Yang Chen Fu, Sun Lu Tang or Chen Xiao Wang, while you're at it. This guy really throws his student without so much as moving to a side (see last throw), he's perfectly rooted.

at 1:10, i think the move is a 3-D spin, look closely at Yuehs, left hand movement, i think he spins upwards along with sideways, which would throw the oponents shoulder differently, i beleive, accounting for the stumble factor

It is impossible to disengage with Ma or anyone following correct Wu style principles as attempting to do so will cause Ma to fill in the empty space.

We have to go low when we're young b/c our technique is not deep. (It's similar to how younger fencers have to make bigger adjustments with their feet, but the old masters, in Wudang and FIE, can do it with minute adjustments:)

Whilst Ma was certainly a well reknowned master. His senior, Wu Kung Yi was a full time martial artist and instructor of Whampoa Military teaching the elite china military officers as well as the representative of Tai Chi at the Macau fight so I wouldnt write him off.

yes, thats sadly the fate of most martial arts threads. who cares who's master's master trained 8 hours a day and who trained 9?

Nobody cares b/c we can all see who trained the hardest and most correctly over the longest periods just by watching them. But the real question is, how much time do *we* put in, such that perhaps a small handful will be able to preserve the true art for another generation.

I can understand why people think that this is fake. Is there some cooperation? Yes, but none at the end when the student flies out or falls to the ground. Maplewalnuht is mostly correct in that the student is twisted up and under a great deal of physical pressure. In addition, the student is also off balance, and, Master Ma knows how to use it in a very subtle way. The cooperation is in the beginning, when the student does not attack and instead just touches Master Ma's arm(s). If the student just attacked it would be even worse for him as there would be much more off balance and force for Ma to use against him. If the attacker was a highly skilled fighter of almost any style, or no style, he MIGHT give Master Ma trouble, if he was free to attack in any way he wanted to, use feints first, etc. All others would be no problem, no matter what they did, unless they had a weapon. And, remember, Ma could hit very hard too. Real tai chi is way too subtle for most to understand without long study. It does look fake until you feel it yourself. If you are in the Los Angeles area you can check out Ma's student, Gerald Sharp. He is open to FRIENDLY testing by those who are interested in studying real internal martial arts. Gerald teaches Ba Gua and Hsing Yi too and has trained some high skilled Ju Jitsu men to be even better.

mj137jm Thank you for the courtesy, literacy and thoughtfulness of your reply. It is kind of you to take such trouble. I've reviewed it and see your points. The last move is 'leading into the void' and its done with aplomb. I recall being thrown around a dojo by another student, who was very skilled and understood the breaking of balance far better than I. That said, it was some 15 years ago. I was training Ba Gua under Edward Hines at that time. I have great admiration for the sophistication of Ba Gua. Also for Luo De Xui, whom I also had the pleasure of witness. Still, I could only ride one horse at a time, so I made my choice - Trad JJ - not least because it gave me an immediacy and a bedrock of practical experience. I have returned to Tai Chi and get to visit a very high grade instructor in London; though sadly, not often enough; work supervenes. He's also an Adept in Ba Gua but his real passion is Xing Yi. For me, the Trad JJ path continues but I retain my hope to return to Ba Gua and explore more Tai Chi. Every good wish.

mj137jm Very well said; thank you for putting this so clearly. The techniques do work, and they work according to the circumstances they are designed for, just like any other martial art. In this respect martial arts are all underlaid by logic and to some degree a demonstration like Master Ma's is given to show that logic within certain limits. Of course Ma is at the creative level of skill and so his techniques are quite freely applied.

There are a slew of great Tai Chi teachers in London. My instructor has been Keith Alker but I've had to miss quite a few classes of late. Dreaming Dragon has an excellent reputation in Camden (where I am) as does Tai Ji Circle. Both are Chinese and teach Chen Style and much more. Google them and good luck. Hope it helps.

Liang shows good sensitivity, uses an open hand and doesn't "tug" on his opponent which is good Tai Chi. Unfo, he's unbalanced and has little "root", which means excessive force would see him fall over and unable to "yield" quickly enough or far enough to maintain distance form his opponent. he needed to domnay more "technicals" to be more "stable" with the yin and yang of his opponents force.
