But the aimpoint and the acog are so much better . You take a regular joe the guy will the optic is going to win most of the time .the guy that says most shots are within 300meters he never went to Afghanistan 5.56 is a good round probley kill more people than any other round but there's newer stuff out there like 6.5 that will get out 2 800 meters with low recoil and you could still carry a 210 load

I only carried an A1, the first time I picked up an A2, I was shocked that it was noticeably heavier than the A1 and longer, as well. The A2 wasn't nearly as comfortable to hold as the A1, either. Of course, the A2, being heavier, was a softer firing rifle. But the A1 didn't exactly have a big kick to begin with.

None of them are uncomfortable at all, but to me, the A1 was like a favorite pair of shoes. I now have an A1, an A2 and an M4 (all AR-15 Semi-Auto of course), and my favorite to shoot is the A1... of course. I'm preparing to put together an XM16E1 clone now. It probably won't be done for several months though.

Back when I was doing my time in the Russian military we had some American guys come over and show us the M4's. It was quite interesting to compare the M4 with the AK74's we had as there were a few things that took us by surprise. The first was we found it harder to use the M4 inside a vehicle because the stock was always in the way. Although the AK was a massive rifle, the ones we got had the side folding stocks on them. It was interesting to see a gun designed for vehicle use not performing as well as a full sized rifle, but I guess it all came down to a different mindset during the design process. The M4 was a dream to shoot, I particularly liked how the volume of it was significantly lower than our service guns.

Hulbert Parsons Its design wasn't to allow people to shoot from vehicles, but rather get out of them easier. Because of the stock on the M4 it was somewhat harder to tuck the gun close to you as you were getting through the door, even though it's overall length is still shorter than an AK with the stock folded.

I just did that, got an A4 to go with my A2. I still prefer classic looks of the A2 and for my purposes as a civilian don't see much practical difference between the two. If you are in the military in and out of trucks with all the gear you have to wear etc. then the adjustable stock and a little less barrel length will be key. Thinking on those lines highlights one of the AR design shortcomings the buffer tube not allowing for a side folding stock, which can be really desirable any time you want the firearm to be significantly shorter.

For any that may not know I was an armorer in the US Army, and here is an easy way to tell the difference (all descriptions are of the original weapons, and based on age, you can basically make any of these models look alike): M16-A1: Semi and Fully Automatic. Carrying handle is part of the upper receiver and cannot be removed, and handguard is old style that is smooth and has ridges on the bottom/front edge. M16-A2: (Derrick is using this one) Semi and Burst fire. Carrying handles is part of the upper receiver and cannot be removed, and has an improved handguard (See Derrick's rifle for example of handguard). M16-A4: Semi and Burst fire. Carrying handle is removable and has rail on upper receiver and utilizes a picatinny rail system in place of the handguard for mounting other tactical tools. AND... (I'm not as familiar, so if anyone has any more to offer... Please feel free). M16-A3: Semi and Fully Automatic. Has Improved handguard (again, See Derrick's rifle for example of handguard). I've seen both a single-unit upper receiver/carrying handle and a removable carrying handle for this model, but I can't be certain that original styles weren't modified before I used the weapons. ~The more you know =)

An often overlooked consequence of the shorter barrel, which also can lead to very unpleasant noise and muzzle blast that can be less than ideal in some self defense scenarios when you don't have hearing protection, and in low light where the flash and noise may even be disorientating.

I've been in the Army for a year and a half so far, active duty. I was able to experience the M4, M16A4, and M16A2. Had an M4 in basic training, M16A4 in AIT, only for a small FTX that we did, nothing special. Then I had an M16A2 when I first got to my unit at Ft Bliss, we ended up getting M4s when were about to deploy to Afghanistan. Prior to that, I qualified with an A2 at my unit at least three times prior to deployment, the weapon did feel a lot smoother to operate compared to the M4, both are really fine though.

Just in case someone else hasn't mentioned it, although that is highly unlikely, the M4 kind of fell short in Afghanistan. The average shot became much longer than it had been since Viet Nam. But the whole modular thing envisioned by Stoner really came to the fore in being able to morph into a rifle that worked well by just changing the barrel and tweaking the ammunition used.

When you're being engaged by a PKM 800 meters out, shooting 7.62x54r at you out of a long heavy barrel from a supported position, then 5.56 from a lightweight 14.5" barrel just isn't gonna cut it. But I guess that's what the flyboys are for.

All of those old M-14s gathering dust in arms warehouses all of a sudden became important again, because our troops needed something able to reach farther and hitter harder than the .224-caliber round. The soundest approach to arming our warriors is to have enough of a selection in their small arms to give them choices when getting ready for missions. And not just choices in small arms, but in ammunition as well.

There is something beautiful about a traditional, stock AR.

My muzzle velocity was able to take down "targets" with soft body armor at 300 yd while the m4 could not penetrate. That round needs the longer barrel to have a better muzzle velocity at further distance. And as a Marine I like to engage my "targets" before they know I'm there.

I myself started with the M16A1 in the mid 1980s. I went to combat in Panama with the M16A2 in 1989. Then I went again for 2 combat tours in Iraq during 2006-2008 using the M4. I went through 3 generations of the M16 series during my time in service as an Infantryman. Derek is probably as old as I am too.

So if I am looking for a rifle that will allow me to consistently hit targets at 200 meters for shtf prep, as I could with the m16a2, would a good quality AR-15 be something to consider or is that unrealistic ? I just learned the hard way that a Mini-14 isn't such a rifle, I'm wanting to replace it.

I like the idea of having the 20" A4 Upper on a collapsable M4 lower for a DMR. But if you want a picatinny rail system got to go with the M4 Upper b/c by the time you put a KAC M5 RAS on that A4 Upper you might as well be carrying around a ironing board.

The A2 has a special place in my favorite firearm list because it is a classic and as a matter of fact I plan on building one soon, its going to be my first AR. Reason why I plan on building one is because I'm not willing to blow a $1000 for a factory built rifle when I can build one for $500-$700 and they are easy to build but I digress thanks for the video because now I'm more determined. I also plan on building the carbine version like the one in the video.

I was in the Army from 2015-2019 basic training I used the m16a2 AND my first unit still had m16s! While I was in that unit they turned in the m16s for m4s. The last unit I was in had m4s but they had done some mod to the m4s to bring it from 3 round burst to full auto. I believe the entire army is in the process of this

I am closer in age to Derek than to Big John. I chuckled when John said that the A2 is cool because it's "classic." I remember when the first M16's were considered ultra modern looking, and were called Mattel guns by the troops in Vietnam. I guess for me an M14 is the one that's a classic.

We were still using the A1s when I got into the Army Guard 13 years ago, and still shooting the A2s (unless you're in a combat, not support or service support, unit). Of course, we've barely just gotten rid of the deuce and a halves and five tons for the new FMTV trucks. I expect we'll still be driving the HMMWVs for another 2, maybe 3n decades.

I joined the Marine Corps in 1977, and was issued an M16 A1. It was well worn. I only stayed in for 4 years, and was never in combat, but we all had problems with the A1 jamming. I thought they had fixed that with different powder, it's possible it was just from how badly the rifles were worn. They were definitely NOT combat ready. I have a couple of M4 style ARs, I would like to have an A1/A2 style AR, but can't seem to find one.

Had an A2 in boot camp, MOS School, ROTC, and my unit for a couple years before we got M4's. I also briefly got assigned an m16a4 during the transition period. My favorites: 1) M16a4 2) M16a2 3) M4 Something about that smooth operating, high velocity m16 was a dream on range day. Keep in mind a military m4 is 14.5" barrel vs 16" on civilian AR-15's, so there is a significant decrease in ballistics from the M16 to the M4

I prefer the 20" or 16" mid length because I am tall. Surprised you prefer the carbine. More space to hold comfortably and a better sight radius vs the carbine when using iron sights. If you are killing critters 60+ pounds, the added barrel length of a 20" should give you added velocity/knockdown power. No shame in getting a middy or rifle to put on a carbine receiver extension and stock on.

I can confirm the Marines still use the M16A4 at least in boot, I didn't make it past that due to some issues, however I know the Marines are thinking about possibly switching soon to the M4's but a lot of what I hear now is hear say and third person info. As for the difference between the A2 and A4 is as follows: The M16A4 Rifle is a standard M16A2 Rifle with a flat top upper receiver and detachable carrying handle. The flat top upper receiver has an integral rail that is utilized (when the carrying handle is removed) to mount optical devices to the weapon. The M16A4 Rifle in combination with the M5 Rail Adapter forms the Modular Weapon System (rifle version) which provide soldiers the flexibility to configure their weapons with those accessories required to fulfill an assigned mission. There are no differences between the internal dimensions of the M16A2 Rifle and the M16A4 Rifle.

I was in the first Gulf War. Every fight we were in was at 500+ yards. I would take the A2 or A4 with a full length barrel. Particularly if you put an adjustable stock on it so it's good with or without body armor. Marines still train with the A4 as our rifle course includes a relay on the 500 yard line.

  • @keithwhisman
    @keithwhisman7 жыл бұрын

When I trained on the M16A1 rifle we were told that the max effective range was 350 meters. When training our furthest out targets were 350 meters. The targets were man size black silhouette pop up targets that would pop up at different ranges for no more than 5 seconds and then drop down unless you hit it and then it would drop immediately. At 350 meters you aimed at the very top edge of the head. M16A1 was a fantastic rifle and is still a very strong military arm that would not weaken an army that was only armed with them.

Marine corps combat units use the M4 and more recently the IAR, but for qualifications everyone except snco's and officers get the M16a4 with a vickers or 3point sling (the USMC recently canned the websling) still shooting at the 500. And yes the m4 does go out to 500.

I think the best thing about the A4 is the adjustable stock. It makes a huge difference when you wear body armour or a heavy jacket. Also, much easier to maneuver in tight quarters such as doorways and stairways and vehicles, Etc. I love my original Colt H-BAR Sporter Match rifle with the 20" bbl. It's 100% original and it's the rifle I trained with 25 years ago. But if I had to go back to work I'd definitely be carrying my A-4. The short barrel, collapsible stock, and the flashlight along with my 1X optic make it a much better combat weapon.
