M3BARU: The All-Wheel Drive BMW M3 Rally Wagon

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The M3baru is an all-wheel drive, M-swapped E46 wagon that thinks it’s a Subaru. After a 1,672 mile road trip on harsh terrain through the far reaches of Oregon, I think it’s the perfect answer to a very specific problem. This video documents how this project began, and some of the ups and downs along the way.

    awsome project! did you thought bout making and height adjustable suspension also ? that really would be nice, to be able to use it ,,standard low,, in normal conditions, but have the abillity to raise it if ya goin offroad? i mean something like airsuspension.. my friend did something similar, but he used Heavy duty bigass bags from a BUS ( did something very similar with his E30) - that way, those bags are just overkill and literally immortal and unbreakable on such a low weight.

  • @danielsloan

    @@jacobstraightpipee3991 I haven’t looked into anything that complex yet as it would be a big expense (among plenty of others for this car). The KW V1s do remarkably well on and off road but are too low even in their highest setting. The dream would be a custom rally suspension, but realistically just the stock E46 wagon suspension is probably the best way to go especially since it would be cheap and easy to replace individual components if needed.

    This is a strange and beguiling mix of geeky, pointless and insane. But in a good way. A very good way. I love the steel wheels. A clever and practical change that also looks good. You don't mention cup holders. I am assuming they are stock.

    Hahahaha, thanks! We use the stock cupholders, but also some of these during a road trip: www.ultimatecupholders.com It looks like they aren't currently available, but it's nice because it allows us to carry more water bottles and coffee thermoses and keeps them out of the way of the gearshift.

    This may be the greatest car thing I have ever seen. I saw the original sale listing for this car when it was sold and my mind was blown when they were able to make a S54 oil pan work with awd. I am glad it is out there in the world living it’s best life!

    This is exactly what I’d like too. I own a Subaru Outback (diesel Manual trans) of 2014 in azure blue. Awesome and very practical car that handles quite well for its category and comfy for long drives. We had a E39 530d touring before it. And I do love old BMW’s as well. The Subaru is quite good when compared to the E39, which was the gold standard of large stations of its time. I also have a Lexus SC400 with that awesome, incredibly overbuilt 1UZ in it. I have often dreamed of a Slightly lowered outback, with Koni FSD suspension, Big angry brembo brakes, custom exhaust and that Toyota 4.0 in it at the front. With a Supercharger of course. 👀 I would change nothing externally besides tinting the rear windows and a single exhaust poking from underneath the rear bumper. (And replacing the “Boxer diesel” Badge by a Toyo Land Cruiser’s V8 badge 😂)

    This is cool as fuck. You didn't listen to anyones' preconceptions about cars and built your own concept and it is probably one of the sickest cars to drive out there in the world today. Fucking congratulations man. You are epic. I just came to BMw from the exact same place. Personally, I've always been into Japanese cars. I've never even considered getting a BMW. But I just compared Subarus to x-drive BMWs one day and I realized BMWs just give you more car, and you get a smooth i6 without needing to deal with a boxer engine. A 6speed AWD e46 wagon would be my dream car, but I was only able to find a 6speed AWD e90 sedan. Either way, I want to do something like this with it. For now it will be my snow monster. First step is the LSD...

    Cool idea, and I was wondering where that car went after it was at GlenShelly. I got my M3 from Alex too,but mine is a weekend/track car. I'm really surprised that they didn't do the Rod Bearings before selling it. The S54 is Gods Motor. Does anyone remember the VW Rallye Golf or Golf Country those things were Awesome too.

  • @danielsloan

    @danielsloan

    They did do the rod bearings just before selling it - I'm guessing because they did an oil sample and found that they were wearing thin - but they unfortunately did NOT resolve the issue of how the S54 pump was grinding into the oil pan causing metal shavings to circulate through the engine, so the bearings failed just a few thousand miles later. An unfortunate $10k mistake. I also bought an M3 coupe from them later in 2019 that looked great on paper and in person but has since required a lot of big repairs in just a few thousand miles. I don't think they were malicious or negligent, I just had some really bad luck.

    have you looked into getting a Z3 or Z3M steering rack? I saw it mentioned in the FCP euro article that you were not super stoked on the steering feel, but have gotten used it to. I am sure you have heard, but I am here to confirm the Z3 rack in an E46 really is special & the steering ratio is faster in the best way.

  • @danielsloan

    @danielsloan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately, it isn't possible to (easily) swap racks on an AWD E46. The lack of steering feel is more due to the AWD E46s having less caster, not the quickness of the steering ratio.

    what Daniel said 😂 The steering is fine, if I had to pick a weak point (versus a normal E46 M3 coupe), that would be it, but unless you drive back to back you may not notice. Thanks for watching and reading the story!

  • @danielsloan

    M54 330xi pan, though what we (my mechanic and I) have learned now is that the proper way to do this is likely to combine the front of an S54 pan with the M54xi pan to ensure proper oil flow. After the rod bearing issue, he modified the pan some, but there's still an occasional oil pressure issue under hard braking. The oil pan merging is next on the to do list. It would be a cool swap (I love mine), but it is A LOT of work and you may be better off with an M54B30 swap and adding a supercharger if you still want more power.

    With all due respect to Subaru - as I DD a '97 Tommy kaira M20b wagon - a WRX or STi is not an appropriate vehicle to take on extended offroad trips of any kind - especially if a passenger is anticipated. They are wonderful rally/sports cars, and tremendously and endlessly capable, but they are not quiet. In fact, even after adding a lot of sound dampening during the restoration and upgrade project, the car remains stubbornly loud. The triple-seamed chassis transmits every single bump, ripple, and stone straight through to the driver's extremely deep bucket seat. The suspension squeaks and groans, the tyre noise is loud. The wind noise isn't great. And the combination results in a car which leaves you aurally exhausted after just 5 hours on tar sealed roads. Thrashing a WRX/STi/M20b on gravel roads is a non-stop joy, but it's extremely loud, and you would want ear plugs if you intended to drive hard for longer than 15 minutes or so. The amount of gravel hitting the underside of the car, and the wheel arches is astonishing, especially when AWD drifting: the racket produced means you can't hold a conversation in the car! So, using a BMW and WRXizing it is a pretty cool idea. It'll be a shit-ton quieter, much more luxurious and probably won't burn any more fuel. When the M20b boost kicks hard, the gas bill is horrendous @ $2.70/litre!

    Thanks for sharing your perspective! You explain the differences perfectly. One of my favorite things about the M3baru is how it feels like a regular BMW E46 when driving normally, so it's pretty comfortable on long drives.

I have 3.91 final drive (same as here) with two LSD (front and rear) but I also have a trnsfercase with electronically controlled central dif locking (like DCCD in subaru and ACD in evo)/ And it absolutely differnt car (in slippery conditiobs) in compare with stock e46x transfer. at the moment I have i bit spiced m54b30 around 250 bhp, but we mooving on..
