I feel like I made the mistake of getting a base-model M1 Air, and I'm constantly hitting memory and CPU/GPU issues. It's been somewhat frustrating, so I was ready to upgrade. It felt absolutely insane to go from an M1 to an M2, but now with the M3 out I can rest a little easier. I put an order in for an M3 Pro which should feel like a 2x improvement for me.

Apple can do a slick editing job of the BTS, preserving mystique, but giving the audience some unscripted views: talent, locations, technical, audio (this event was in Spatial Audio). I think they used the iPhone 15 Pro Max to capture this event in Spatial Video for future Vision Pro content.

idk for mac laptops i don't know anyone who upgrades every year or 2. Most of the mac owners i know..which actually is a lot, almost all have an old intel macbook pro or intel macbook air. Some of them have macbook pros from 2013 lol. The avg person is so clueless when it comes to good tech. They tell me their old macbook airs are still great, but when i see them use it, their airs struggle to keep a couple of tabs and powerpoint open at the same time lol, and can't run many programs. These people need to upgrade their computers badly i'd say. You are right about most of them buying the cheapest macbook, but i actually think its short sighted if the plan is to buy a new laptop every 5+ years. The base airs offer 8 gbs of ram, which is pathetic. Would say at the min should be 16 gbs. I personally would never buy an air unless i'm only keeping it for 3 years. The airs do not age well, the people who say they do, don't know what a good laptop is. I rather just spend more and get the cheapest macbook pro and have a laptop that can pretty much anything for at least 5 years.

Makes sense depending on the use. If you use a lot of RAM heavy applications, the M3 still uses LPDDR5 instead of the faster LPDDR5X, might be better wait for an M4 where they'll (probably) upgrade to a faster unified memory.

Great video, especially, creating this from a hotel room! I've seen other channels speculate that some of the biggest improvements of a 3 nm chip have to do with 2 big improvements in efficiency and one performance improvement. As I understand it, the 3 benefits derived from that upgrade in efficiency are: 1) Lowered power consumption, i.e. less wasted natural resources and longer battery life, 2) Lowered heat generation, and 3) improved performance under heavy loads because with less heat generation also comes less performance throttling. Although I do modest amounts of video editing and zero gaming, I definitely AM interested in using my computer for flight simulation as a serious flight training resource. Flight Sim programs are notorious for using only one graphics core for 99% of the work. Historically, this has run computers HARD and very HOT. That's a problem if a person's workflow also works better with a laptop because a lot of work requires computer use while "out in the field". If a computer could do the heavy lifting required by Flight Sim programs when I'm home, but could also be portable when I'm working away from home (laptop), that would be the Holy Grail of computers for me. Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but the combination of efficiency and performance made possible by the M3 seems like it might fulfill all of that? The efficiencies of the M1 and M2 were fine as far as power draw, but were still not quite there with heat dissipation as far as Flight Sim and 3D rendering work. My sense is that the 3 nm technology promises a big reduction in heat generation. Any thoughts on this? Is this a test you would be interested in doing? Thanks Marques!

Basically, yes. Smaller feature size does mean less charge to store, and lower voltage means lower current and lower temps, and that the transistors can switch in less time even at the same “slew rate” (~ “ramp up speed”). It also means they can pack more RAM and cache on the one chip, which means the fastest memory read/write cycles, plus more cores.

M3 improvements from M2 are really miniscule. A very minor update for general use, but it does unlock some niche features and workflows

Interesting, I felt the opposite after looking at it all. I had no urge to go to the m2 and even recommended buying a used or refurbished m1 machine to most people, but looking at it all I definitely would recommend the m3 more than a used m2. Granted I do work in a more cpu and gpu intensive setting than most but to me it seems like a good upgrade

yeah i agree with you guys. very few people are going to upgrade their laptop every year because it’s just silly. it seems to me that they were really targeting intel based and m1 based users

Agree. Not Apple’s fault the economy is terrible, but such a small bump (and comparing performance to the M1 is just embarrassing) isn’t going to make much difference. As he stated, the matte blk may drive more sales than the specs. My 2017 MBP is still great so short of winning the lottery…

ive been working on a late 2013 macbook pro since it came out, im so juiced to get one of these new ones. This bad boy is still kicking to this day, but it is quite tired, and has a hard time keeping up with all the newest software. Cant wait!

I’d love to see a video from you after you deeply reviewed the Snapdragon X performance, because for me it seems that Apple threw away the 3-year’s tech advantage. Was really this MacBook Pro evolution needed with 3 nm but an architecture that is really nothing great compared to M1. Indeed they compared the performance all along the keynote with Intel Mac… still??? Looking forward to see your detailed analysis. Great video as always Marquese.

I have an M1 MacBook Pro and it is still an absolute beast. Never runs slow, a fan has never turned on and the battery life is still as amazing as when I first got it. Plus, I love the touchbar.

It is not an interesting topic to me, but I appreciate you doing such a raw video, that is solely about your channels biggest strength, a in the end personal opinion of a well experienced and quite reflected tech user. I hope this doesn´t sound condescending. I appreciate many of the ways you bring towards your work, only sometimes the polishedness or titles of the videos might direct away from the essence, that´s why this was in a good way surprising to me, that you see this as valid of a video as the high effort productions.

I think it's reasonable that they compared with the M1 products since the people who own M1 are the most likely to be buying these new macs. That being said, I have an M1 Pro 14" MacBook Pro base spec and it's fantastic. Still very fast, great battery life, awesome speakers and screen etc. No plans to upgrade until maybe the M5 or M6.

i always felt like that was the point of macbooks anyway. not to replace every year or two like a phone but to hold onto it for a good while. I know a few of my music producer buddies who still use macbooks from like 2017 because they still get the job done well

maybe m1 macbook air owners, but even then, most macbook air users are not tech savy and think everything is fast lol, so might think their laptop is still perfect. I think like 10 percent of m1 macbook pro owners will update to m3 pros. Most of the upgrades i think will come from ppl who own intel based macbooks.

Maybe instead of catering for Mac owners and trying to get them to upgrade every two years, they should start looking into getting more windows users into using macs.
