M1 MACBOOK AIR REVIEW | A Good Choice For Computer Science Students?

Ғылым және технология

M1 MACBOOK AIR REVIEW! How is the M1 Macbook Air for computer science? In this video, I test out Pycharm, VS Code, Xcode, Android Studio, monitor support, and more. Let's see if the M1 Macbook Air would be a good choice for computer science students!
Normally, I would not think that a macbook air would be a good choice for computer science students given that they need to run all sorts of programs on their computer, and thus would need a pretty powerful one. However, the M1 Macbook Air is unlike previous macbook airs. It is fast, powerful, and has great performance. So while I didn't intend to use the M1 Macbook Air for any computer science work myself, I'm beginning to consider doing so...
I hope you enjoyed this video and found it helpful. Again, this video is not meant to be comprehensive. Before you make any purchases, please make sure that any specific programs/applications that you need to use are able to run on the M1 chip!

I decided to cancel my 8gb order and go with the 16gb. Thinking I could switch out the NVME or Ram but that seems to only be possibly on the older mac models since on the 2020 everything is soldered. Hopefully everything goes well! I know apple OS's are super optimized but would rather spend the extra 200 (I get free airpods anyways lol) to be future proofed a bit longer.

One thing that's important for developers, for day-to-day stuff, is the ability to run applications in Docker or similar container software (like Podman). Now Docker will eventually release a compatible version, but right now there's no way to run containers. And even with a container, it's gonna be weird to see how the translation will work between the container (most often it's gonna be x86) and the base system. Because it ain't gonna be Rosetta.

@ianno3 I already got my 16Gb and I am pretty happy with it. On one hand there might be some plug-in that has memory leaks, on the other hand I don’t have any regrets upgrading to 16Gb. I have been using 64gb Mac, so even 16Gb sounds less than ideal to me. I am a backend software engineer and I connect it to two 4K monitors @60hz with a DisplayLink docking station. With about 50 tabs open between Jira and stackoverflow the laptop always on SWAP. I understand due to the awesome speed of the IO on the new MacBooks we don’t see the beach ball as often but in the long run I do believe with constant large chunks of sections of SSD used for caches the fragmentation will slow down the machine over time. That said I believe it varies from person to person. It’s just my work flow probably better off with more RAM.

Just saying, this video was made in November, and not many apps (including Chrome) had been optimized to run natively on ARM. Now they are, so you might not need the 16 GB to run those apps. Obviously this wont apply to everyone, but if you have been fine with 8 GB in the past, I see no reason to pay more for 16.

This mac is the lowest spec air. And I don't know too much about the pro because I don't have it. I didn't originally think the air would be well suited for CS students, but after the M1 chip performed way beyond my expectations, I started to think that the air could be a viable option.

If you are doing web dev, you need more than an IDE and a browser. One of the biggest pieces of web dev is designing a server. The server is an application just like any other, albeit without a GUI. Also, DOCKER. You will probably need docker to run and quickly set up several servers on one machine. If you are a CS student in this day and age, you will NEED docker. Maybe not for the first couple years of your program, but for the third or fourth year you certainly will. The missing virtualization capabilities are what keep Android emulators from running and are also what keep Docker and VirtualBox from running smoothly. But yes, for first-year students just doing very basic Python or Java applications or basic HTML/JavaScript webpages that don't require a server but are just parsed from a local file, the M1 works. For advanced students or for getting work done in the workplace (if you aren't programming iOS/Mac exclusive apps), you will need an Intel or AMD processor for the time being.

I too bought the base (8GB) model, I haven’t come across any issues, tried to open a bunch of chrome(m1 version)/safari tabs, vscode, xcode, spotify. I did see that my swap memory hit the 9GB mark at some point while I was installing xcode and other apps from the app store. I wonder why you saw those ram issues, perhaps some apps were being installed in the background or antivirus sw?

  • @virendrakate

Nope. Ram is only use when apps are running. Having many installed apps shouldn’t affect RAM usage. If you do have issue with 8GB, would suggest going with 16 because you can no longer upgrade the system by yourself without buying a completely new device

Another issue is going to be a lack of support for Docker, and then when/if that comes, it may only be able to run ARM docker images. This can be an issue because it's a blocker to just being able to quickly spin up various database systems or web proxies, or you name it. Not sure if that applies to CS students (depends on you and your courses) but its definitely a concern for a lot of people who want to do some kind of enterprise style development.
