Lyoto Machida faced the Final Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, Pride Middleweight Champion, Pride Welterweight Champion, and at that time #1 contender Dan Henderson on 23 February 2013, on the co-main event of UFC 157.
The winner of the fight was expected to get a title shot. Machida defeated Henderson via split decision, but ultimately Alexander Gustafsson was given the title shot against Jon Jones

Machida was the best at one point completely underrated fighter who flew under that radar by most casual fans. Only real fans knew how good machida was.

I swear Machida's arsenal shrank when he went to MW. Gone were those counter knees and knees from the Thai clinch. And he rarely, if ever, tried to take guys down either. That guy was a beast at LHW tho. Second favorite fighter ever.

@@Dankelheit Many times? What were you watching? He caught him with a head kick several times and they weren't always clean. It was close that's why it was a split. Machida won the first it was close until that trip ontop won him that round because you could have had it either way.. Second was all Hendo but there wasn't much action of anything that was hugely significant. Third was super close it was back and fourth but Machida landed cleaner shot's. Now they scored it a split it was more of a draw. Machida just about let this slip away because he wouldn't engage and Hendo was trying to blast him and was way more aggressive. One big right hand from Hendo would have changed the outcome not a KO either.
