These guys were talking about the Billboard charts. Gimme back my bullets means “we want another hit” like they were older and not getting the love they deserved. #12 “with a bullet” was the actual symbol used on the chart (bullet points, etc.). So between this and “Working for MCA” they wrote some real bangers about the music industry.

Unfortunately gun lobby took it over, no matter what the song's origins are. Ain't nobody going to survive a shootout with SWAT, ATF, National Guard, Marines, Army, Air Force, FBI, CIA, Maltan Masons etc etc. This nonsense about gun panty equipment and FreeDumb already logged the evidence that most deviants and weaklings and sex offenders drool over mass murdershaft death equipment.

The best southern rock band ever! Ronnie Van Zant was a master band leader. Memorized all the lyrics to all the songs and expected the other members to memorize every note of every song. It’s one reason they put on fantastic live shows. I saw them 3 times prior to the plane crash. RIP to all that have passed.

As mentioned in other comments, a 'bullet' in music industry terms refers to a fast rising song on the music charts. Apparently lead singer Ronnie Van Zant didn't think his band was getting their fair recognition by industry people and defiantly let them know through this song.

When your song was listed on the charts, example: debut at 93, jump to 72, jump to 20 with a bullet for a fast riser in the charts. Bullet represented shooting to the top of the charts quickly. They had some songs stagnating on the charts and werent very happy about it.

The bullets represent a music ranking chart. Songs in the top 40 charts in a certain magazine were given bullets to show where their song is ranked on the weekly charts. Apparently, they lost some bullets and one of their songs was falling off the chart.

Someone may have already Have commented about meaning of Gimmee back my bullets. Its stems from places on the music charts the bullets next to the name of the song. They were the hardest touring band at the time, and just got a new drummer Artimus Pyle ( great notice on the drum style ) They were tired of being underrated. First three albums were with producer Al Kooper Cooley. New producer Tom Dowd on this one. Been a Fan since 9th grade 1974

There are SOOOOOOOOO many great great great bands from the greatest decade of modern music, The 70's. You can't count the number of bands that made Life Changing music , not just with the instruments but the words and messages in the lyrics is unmatched. There were so many different styles of rock and roll too that every nerve within the human body was touched. You have SOOOOOOOO MUCH MORE to explore, learn about, and understand what occured in that decade of the 70's. And a large percentage of these bands played well into the 1980's and a few into the 90's. RnB and Disco were also great contributors to what was coming out of our Boom Boxes/Over The Airways.... Continue your exploration into the music, bands, and lyrics of the 70's and I promise you it will forever change your appreciation for real music. Oh, pay attention to all of the harmonies that each band incorporated into almost every song. You haven't heard harmony on the radio for 4 decades/since the 80's. And done by the groups who carried over from the 40's 50's 60's and 70's... Journey On Fella's

A pencil pusher would be a businessman/accountant in general, but Lynyrd Skynyrd also fought the battle with the recording industry that fought them for rights/control. So to me, this is a plea for more creative control---give me back my bullets--and just more sense of ease in the life. Let me be me...right? These guys are tight...Ronnie drilled 'em like a sergeant, is how it sounds! And I love that he always performed barefoot. They were hard, but in the end they had a heart, not a band to hide behind the southern flag and all that.

On their first five studio albums they don't miss. Every song is amazing. This ended up being my favorite Skynyrd album, even though I love them all. It's a little rawer/simpler, probably because there were only two guitarist on this album. Not knocking Ed King, who had left the band. He was a badass musician. They got Steve Gaines on the next album, Street Survivors, which gave them a little different sound. Of course he was a badass too. I know their music has been categorized as Southern rock, but to me there's really no such thing. Rock originated from the South, thanks to the blues and country music, and artists like Chuck Berry and Elvis. Cry For the Bad Man is a great tune from this record. Or just randomly pick one to react to, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. You can do that with any of their first five studio albums.

Great reaction to this , you're right, VERY , even "quintessentially," American band! You want to hear them in DEEP Blues Mode, try "The Ballad of Curtis Loew." Slide (or steel, maybe, 'fraid I dunno!) gee-tar, played angelically, more "street" themes, a helluva moving story, and just unforgettable music. Same with , on the uplifting side, "Call Me the Breeze." AND, a hidden gem, "WINO"!! Ronnie's vocals are unforgettable there, a kick-ass song!

Interesting thing about this song & the LP . They had like 3 weeks to write & record it as they were under contract to crank out a new record every 9 months & they were in the middle of a massive tout they dubbed the "Torture tour" I heard that when they wrapped this album , the tour bus was literally waiting for them in the studio parking lot to take them right to the next show !!!

Back in the 70’s if we was drinking “Jack Daniels” and listening to Skynyrd… somebody was gonna fight! Usually a good friend that was “pickled”! Never failed

Bullets meaning like a “bullet onthe charts.” Even though there third album Nuthin Fancy was full of excellent classic songs they hadn’t had a hit single since Sweet Home on the Second Helping album. So Ronnie was looking for another big hit which wouldn’t come until there ill fated final album Street Survivors.

Bullets ,refers to points on the Billboard top 200 charts . Ronnie was like a field General when it came to managing the band & keeping Skynyrd in the forefront of the rock world. This record didn't do so hot at first ,but it's a damn fine record. Check out the song "Trust " Incredible singing , insane drumming , lyrics . I believe it may have referred to Ronnie's first ex wife .
