We used to go on vaca when my kids were lil, maybe 10 & 8ish? They always said dad don't forget the "vacation tapes"(cassettes) & we had tapes that no matter where we went we always started off with Skynyrd & Molly Hatchett. My daughter thought they were same band. Lol she was 8. She is huge fan at 36, & says they are both southern rock but how did I think it was all one band?. On birthdays, mothers day, fathers day she always posts on FB a special thank you to my mom & dad with teaching me love of great music like Skynyrd, Hatchett, Outlaws, Charlie Daniels, they raised me rght. No bigger honor than that. She was 10-12 yrs old listening ti Classic Rock stations while her friends were into Backstreet Boys & NSnync. My job was done!

Lol I wasn't at that concert but 65 yrs old now & still rock out to Skynyrd. I think I appreciate their genius even more now, at the tike it was just kick ass southern rock but never appreciated at the time, the master poet that RVZ was. I loved them but now appreciate each individual genius of each guy.

I love the way they take a bowe to the fans class act
Steve Gaines, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins. The Holy Trinity of lead guitar. Leon Wilkeson on bass and Artimus Pyle on drums with the legendary Billy Powell tickling the ivories.

Is it? I'll admit I'm out of my league regarding live Skynyrd. But I could swear I've heard a better live version. Cleaner and more vibrant on the first half with the vocals. If my LS knowledge was as equal to mine of the Grateful Dead's, I'm sure I could name the show. The second, and the reason why this song kicks so much ass, is as fine as I've heard, that's to be sure. So am I just misremembering live Freebirds? Anyone want to post some other live versions better than this? I'm honestly curious. Cause I swear there is a better one.

@@thewheel73 Knebworth Festival. They opened for the Stones who were kinda snobby with the guys and didn't want them on their tongue shaped stage. That didn't go too well.
It's hard to appreciate how great this video is on the first listen. The second half of the song is one of the best live performances ever
Every time I heard this while driving I just kept going faster and faster!
Love Skynyrd! This is an epic performance!
It's songs like this that can completely take me away from what's going on right now and put me in a completely different place. The freedom we had back then is a bygone era. I miss it.
Another Southern Rock band I hope you react to is The Marshall Tucker Band "Heard it in a Love Song". There is a flute intro that I love.
Back in the day, this was THE Skynyrd song. Everyone knew this song, and you could tell from the crowd’s reactions they were anticipating the guitars at the end, all three plus bass. Saw them in Anaheim just prior to this where they coheadlined with Ted Nugent. Was a guitar extravaganza.
Three guitars awesome and the crowd makes it love the crowd I saw them live at 76

He is about to be introduced to Mr Allen Collins
The interplay between guitars in this band are what make them unique. The songs are melodic ear candy. Listen to one more from the road, recorded over 3 days at the Foxx theater in Atlanta. They were back to a triple lead guitar format with the addition of Steve Gaines. Great live album and a primer for skynyrd.
brother you are hearing classic art!
im lucky enough that i got to see the original band in early 77 before the plane crash.
billy powell always had a beer handy on his piano!
This is one of those songs that I always find myself speeding in the car when it comes on radio by the end of the song.....oops...yeah...breaking the law! Thanks for the reaction.
Sad they are all gone now, except for the drummer and one guitarist; with Ronnie Van Zant and a few other band members who were killed on impact in the plane crash, just 3 months after this concert. Great reaction!
You are great! I’m happy I found you. I love Free Bird!
One of the greatest bands. One of best guitar solos. Rip.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is amazing! Suggestion, "Call me the breeze" live knebworth 1976, "T for texas" live 1977 Asbury Park.
Them boys could ROCK!
On the right day, like this one, they could blow any other band out of the water.
Everybody loves the live performances, which are very good, but listen to the studio version too. The song really comes across much better.
The better live one is the time they opened up for The Rolling Stones they were told not to walk down on the tongue of the stage and they did anyways it was great

That's the 1976 Knebworth concert, ( or Festival as it's known by) in Britain.
It's still a thing to this day for someone in the crowd at a gig or concert to yell out "Free Bird!" as though it was a request. ; )

The best guitar playing ever!! Hands down!!!!
They have a live album called One More From/ For the Road that to me is the best live album I have ere heard
The dynamic duo of Steve Gaines and Allen Collins. Skynyrd is the greatest southern rock band of all time.
Thanks, man! This is the second of the three songs I recommended as "must do" reactions.I don't think you have been disappointed by my suggestions yet,so finish it off with the great Heart "Baracuda" Official video.Thank again.😊😊😊😊
Ronnie would judge how long the guitar solo would last by the drummer. Man the drummer was killing it. Ronnie would watch the drummer and he would flag, he would signal the guitarists to cut it!
FREEBIRD !! I'm one of the old guys that you hear yelling that at any festival that has a live band. To all the; now grandmas that were in that Oakland crowd. The girls of the 70's were the hottest. We had the best music, fastest cars and hottest women. So good to see today's young people discovering the music that came before auto tune and electronic reproduced instrumentals. The latest version of Skynrd that tours today is great, but this power house version before the crash was beyond description. Let us all enjoy the fact that Gary Rossington has once again, been able to rebound from heart issues to play with the band.
I seen them June 11 1977 in Philly at the JFK Statium where they held live aid but I seen them and Peter Frampton comes Alive and Jay Geils band just 4 months before the plane crash and I saw exactly what you are watching now greatness they are in Rock and Roll heaven
You need to react to them in 1975 at Winterland singing On the Hunt! It's amazing! Ronnie's vocals are unbelievable!! The song is so bluesy!!!
Hard to believe that only two of these band members are still with us today, Gary Rossington (playing some slide on the guitar) and Artimus Pyle (drummer). At least these two got to see this song go down in history as one of the most iconic songs ever made. RockInParadise to those great band members. ✌
This is what we did before cell phones, .....when you realize your grandparents were pretty cool
The bass player is hammerin' it!
That tall guitarist in white is Allen Collins, he wrote the guitar parts for Free Bird when he was like 16.

Allen Collins is an absolute legend! Impossible to look anywhere else when he was on stage. This probably isn’t the best example but in other live recorded versions & other songs you can see how mightily proud Ronnie was of Allen, indeed of all of his guitarists. He’d just stand there grinning like a proud, immensely satisfied father while they tore it up for the crowds!
Every band that plays in Alabama no matter if they are rap, classical, rock, country, etc has someone in the audience scream out "FREEBIRD" lol
They were majestically wonderful. The top of the Southern Rock heap. U have such good taste in your appreciations! I grew up on this & i feel so lucky. Not crazy bout the Confed flag & as a teen i wasnt schooled but im sure the members regret it now. We lost some of them in the 70s and i cut school the day it happened.
Great reaction.
My favorite band of all time! I like your analysis. God bless ya sir
Chod you just experienced one of the greatest rock anthems of all time. Look at the crowd too bad you will never experience something like that in your lifetime.
*Artimus Pyle ( Drummer ) never gets the credit he deserved for being able to keep the beat and providing a tempo for the strings and piano. Though not an Original Member, he is the last one still here with us. All the rest are High Flying Free Birds -------->*
Must have been ladies day. I didn’t realize Lynyrd Skynyrd could pull so many chicks. In my humble opinion this is the second greatest live performance video, only topped by Metallica, Enter Sandman in Moscow.
Myself Sister and friends were there that day. DAY ON THE GREEN OAKLAND COLISEUM. ALSO WENT TO A FUNK CONCERT THERE.
Awesome reaction!🤘🎸👊
I would love to hear that bass isolated.
Take a little time, no reaction needed, and listen to Freebird Live from the album "Another One From the Road". A lot cleaner but still a great live performance. Well worth it. Great reaction, though.

The slide guitar bird chirp was a nod to the late Duane Allman (he plays it on the Gibson in the Layla coda). Eventually Skynyrd dedicated the song to Duane because he was a huge influence on their sound. May they all RIP.

This is a great performance, but the Knebworth version is even better. Especially with the back story of Skynyrd pissing of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards! As well as blowing the Stones away! They could not follow this, no way.
I saw this tour about a month earlier in Chicagoland and seeing the confederate flag is so jarring. Never noticed it cuz privilege- I am sure I thought it was the southern rock thing. Great concert though 😁 Thanks for the reaction
Billy Powell was a classically trained pianist who was their roadie. One day he was playing piano and Ronnie heard him and said I didn't know you played piano. You're fired. Want to join the band?
I had tickets to see them in Arkansas , it would have been my 1st concert ever, but sadly the airplane crash happened right before they were going to be there. I still have my ticket, it only cost $6.00 I also still have their last album, after the crash they changed the cover of it because it had them standing behind flames 🔥 😢 RIP 💕💕
