    WHAT an absolute pleasure and privilege it was to be able to voice Lyn in this! FE7 was the very first video game I picked up as a wee bab and it introduced me to the franchise I'm still obsessed with it to this day (seriously I share a YT channel -- Fishy Emblem -- *solely* dedicated to FE). Regardless how much heat Lyn gets, I will always be a fan of hers. Call it blinded by nostalgia if you want but somehow, unconsciously and unconditionally, child me fell in love with her story. And this Support Science only further reinforces that notion for the me that is now growing into adulthood. Recording the Lyn & Wallace scenes in particular were experiences I'll remember always as an amateur VA. Thank you to any and all who watched to the very end! AND THANK YOU GHAST & CAST! For the opportunity, the recording sessions filled with many bloopers, and the tenacity to put together such a beast of a video. I've been watching Ghast for years now and the progress he makes with each sequential video is stunning. The time, energy and love everyone has poured into this is immensely appreciated! Well done, all! ✨

    Lyn was probably my first and greatest female role model in fiction. Her strength of character, kindness, and pride inspired me from the first time I saw her. Seeing her develop through the game and facing challenges to her character making her grow made me admire her all the more. From an early age I decided if I ever have a daughter I would want her to be named Lyndis in the hope those positive traits in her character can be passed on to my kin.

    Okay, so. Wallace now bvecame one of my most underrated FE characters. This kinight; - Disobeyed his lord and allowed his close friends to elope while suffering for half a year as punishment for his failure. - STILL remained loyal to said country, despite his disagreement and punishment. - Joined Lyn, despite her being an "imposter" according to his lord's propaganda. - Annihilated an entire bandit tribe to prevent his friend's daughter from being overcome with rage and bloodshed. if this guy isn't one of the most inspiring characters, I don't know who is.

    How. How on earth is the person who made the amazingly edited, lengthy, excellently researched, and just over all high quality video. Is the same person that made "so this is basically fe6". Regardless of the fact that the two videos are of different genres with one a comedic and quick summary and the other, well I needn't say it twice. Youve evolved so much over all these years and your hard work shines through every second of your videos, especially ones such as these. Your unique charm is also so welcoming. I severely doubt you need it, but just as a statement from a long time viewer. You should be proud of the results your hard work prospered. And you should continue to keep up the hard work, it certainly doesn't go unappreciated. Amazing job, and good luck against Mangs :)

I'm not a big fan of characters like Nino, nyx, and Lyn. They just didn't really click that well with me but rather just kinda hate them (not like the community helps with those perceptions haha) but your videos on them has actually helped me gain more respect for these characters I once hated. The vids arent "here are some examples on why this character is cool", it's a " Here is an in depth analysis of a characters story that you might not be familiar with" and with very little personal bias involved. They help people both veterans and new, learn something that once may have eluded them or gain a new perspective on a character they may have once set aside. And I can assure you my opinions about such are shared.

    Call her a bad unit. Either strictly 1 or 2 ranged. But after this I don't think you can not say Lyn is a great support character for Hector, let alone a great one herself. Yeah there are FE6 continuity issues, but Lyn shows how creative the writing team was for FE7. Thanks Ghast, this was a great video, and I hope many people come to an appreciation for Lyn as a character.

    Excellent analysis. Lyn is an amazing strong heroine in her own story because so far she's lived only in a world where she was encouraged to take pride in herself. It was her pride in herself that let her win the day, but Lycia is a whole new world where she can't always know what to expect. Eliwood accepts her because he's Eliwood, her grandfather loves her as she is, but she can never know whether other Lycian nobles will warm up to her, hate her, or condescend to her. That's an interesting point about why Lyn was alone for six months after her people died, about how she might have pushed other people away in her grief and anger. We see how kind she is to her allies during her path (she didn't even stay mad at SAIN for long when they first met) and when she's headstrong, it works to her benefit. She's never really had to THINK about having to adapt to a world where it wouldn't. She's dealing with culture shock, a new role she doesn't feel suited for, and people who challenge her long-held perceptions. I tend to favor Lyn's Sacae endings, but I warmed up to Lyn/Hector because they really do have a great dynamic and considering how unconventional Hector already is, I can't see Ostia batting an eyelash over him marrying a half-blood princess. Lyn and Wallace's support brought PERFECT closure to her desire for revenge. I like to imagine that even if you don't get their A support it still takes place post-game and she still gets that closure because she deserves it.

    This video is a treasure. Absolutely fantastic. I waited for a support science on Lyn for so long, because she was branded as a character with "no personality". Videos like these completely bash these statements, as there is no character who has no personality. Beyond her simple exterior, she had some complications of adapting to a world she wasn't familiar with at all, and genuinely coming out on top. She's my favourite character because she's fun to play as, with just that bit of deepness that makes her interesting. She is not extremely deep, I know. But she makes me feel happy whenever something is resolved by her, gameplay and story wise. Ehm, sorry if it was overly sappy. That's just what I felt. Love at first crit.

    Woah, what you said about the revenge plot and Wallace is really great. Thinking about it, Lyn holds a lot of similarities to Rutger. He's even from Bulgar, the town where Lyn's life takes a dramatic turn. They're both swordspeople of Sacae who lost their tribe to people from Bern, they both swore vengeance, both made it personal that it had to be them to do it, and both let it overtake their positive qualities. I don't know where to go off of that, but I think it's pretty neat.

I consider myself a great fan of Lyn's, and yet there was plenty in this video that I had never really thought about that deeply, which made the whole thing immensely enjoyable, even when I knew more or less what you were going to say. With that in mind, although I agree with most of what you said, there are a few little additions or critiques I would make, for the sake of whomsoever isn't already satisfied after watching the full video. The first point is more of a nitpick, really. Lyn isn't a princess, of any sort, and the concepts of nobility and royalty are conflated throughout the video. It's made clear that the Lycian League is a collective political entity with no royal or imperial oversight, which makes the individual Lycian nobles just that - nobles, not royals. As for what Lyn's title would actually be, if we're going by English rules she would probably be styled Viscountess Caelin, and inherit the title of Marchioness Caelin on Hausen's death. This doesn't mean anything for Lyn's character, but it's something worth bearing in mind. The second point is that you make the distinction between two paths that Lyn must choose between - that of staying in Lycia or moving to the plains, framed as the choice between her love of family and love of homeland. I would actually argue that this is a false choice, as ultimately the two are exactly the same thing. Lyn's love of the Sacaean plains is inseparable from her love of her family who lived there with her; and more importantly, the memories of her family from when her life was still normal. Her desire to return when in Caelin is, in my view, a natural extension of the fact that she still ultimately has not got over her parents' deaths and her family's abandonment; she still subconsciously views the plains as the place where her family is, especially when it becomes clear that Hausen will not be around forever. She is deeply emotionally scarred by the horrific way her family died and almost all her personal decisions in the game in some way feed back into the desire to, in some sense, resurrect her family. The supports she has and the ending she gets decides if she can finally move on by building a new family, as in the paired endings, or if she continues to live with the gnawing desire to bring back a family that she no longer has. But yeah, family is the driving theme behind all this game's characters and it's really annoying when Lyn's choice is reduced to the overwhelming desire to spend the rest of her life in a field, which some others have done. Thirdly, Wallace. Wallace is one of my favourite characters in the series and honestly the Wallace/Lyn support might be my favourite support chain in existence, between Wallace's precise and profound language, Lyn's raw emotion and the light it shines on Wallace as a person. "In clarity lies beauty" is such a wonderful way of putting it, especially when you think of how Wallace is introduced. Lyn remarks that she likes him because he's "honest", when really he is anything but - he acts as if he believes Lyn because her eyes are clear, when really it is because he recognises Madelyn's eyes, and he pretends to get lost in Bern when really he was able to track and exterminate to the last man a bandit group that Bern itself had not been able to stop in over ten years. But with that, he brings it back full circle to their first meeting. I could go on and on about Wallace but I'll stop now. On a related note, it has been observed in the past that Lyn is among the most ruthless Lords in the series - some have said most ruthless, though I question whether she is more so than Hector or Ephraim or Ike or Gaiden Alm, for example. It's an interesting contradiction that she is simultaneously very empathetic and compassionate towards those she cares for or who need her help and yet cold and dispassionate towards those she has decided are not worthy of living. She seems quite comfortable with being that way, too, so I'm not certain to what extent it is related to her childhood trauma. Fourthly, I was surprised that you did not mention the running story in Hector's support with her, where she believes he is belittling her strength, challenges him and loses, and starts learning different sword techniques that are better for fighting someone like him. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, because there's a lot to unpack - her preoccupation with her personal strength stemming from her trauma at being unable to fight off the Taliver, her lesson in what her limits are, in how her pride stopped her from winning because she refused to even acknowledge Hector's effective class advantages, and in how her confidence is severely shaken and then restored by Hector's concern and attention to her feelings. So yeah, that's something I think tells a lot about their relationship, as well as Lyn's request that Hector hit her to make her feel better, and her offer to cry for him when she hears of Uther's death, while silently begging him not to die. Finally, and this has nothing to do with her supports, but there are sometimes comparisons made between her and Nino, in terms of how children are portrayed in FE games, which I thought were interesting in terms of her character. She and Nino are, at least in the Japanese games, similar in age - Lyn is 16 and Nino is 14 when they meet - but both behave vastly differently, to the point that the claim is made that "the characters clearly aren't the age they are stated to be", or similar. This is, I think, missing the point, or at least an interesting discussion. Lyn's and Nino's respective character designs reflect the way that they want to be perceived by the world. Lyn wants to be seen as an adult, to be seen as strong and independent, because that's how she believes she can protect the family she cares about, as part of her coping mechanism from her childhood trauma. Nino's ultimate if futile goal is to be "worthy" of her mother's love, so she presents as a model, obedient daughter, because that's what she thinks her mother and thus family wants, group of murderous assassins notwithstanding. Interestingly, when the two of them drop their masks, Lyn becomes more childish while Nino becomes more mature, in some ways, even though both have different personalities. This feeds back into what you were saying about her insecurity when she runs into conflict that her wilfulness cannot solve.

    @@icelerate8141 True... but I think that's more of a colloquial choice on the part of Ephidel to be condescending (lowercase princess, rather than the style of Princess) rather than the acknowledgement of rank. In the same way that Nergal calls her "little girl from Sacae". That being said, you are correct that the use of Princess as a catch-all tends to be awkward in some systems, particularly with regards translation from other languages. Strictly speaking the title of Princess belongs only to the wife of a Prince or to the daughter of a monarch/monarch's children, but afaik some continental nobility systems don't draw that line and so all descendants are also styled princesses... it's complicated. Anyway the point I was making was that nobility =/= royalty and it's a mistake to conflate them

  • @icelerate8141

    @icelerate8141

    I guess Greil was being condescending to Elincia because he said princess in lowercase. Greil: “You say you are the princess of Crimea?” You only capitalize a word like princess when it is being said part of a name. He capitalized Lady because he called her Lady Lyndis. Not Princess Lyndis. I agree she's lower ranked compared to actual royalty but for some reason she's considered a princess. Maybe in each of the territories, the marquess is treated as a king of sorts.

Lyn might not be close to my favorite character in the series, but this video certainly helped deepen my appreciation of her and really helped to frame her as more than just a Mary Sue in her campaign as some have claimed and a supporting character to Hector and Eliwood in the main story. Also, I can't believe you were able to convince me that Hector was a better paring for her than Rath. But I guess it's all thanks to the main story. As just supports, I like Rath's more, but the interactions with Hector in the story are very fleshed out and lowkey very multi layered. I rank this my 4th favourite Support Science so far, right below Eliwood's.

    If they ever remake 6&7, I honestly hope they separate marriage options into S, purely so that we can have Lyn get married while also having the closure of Wallace A support at the same time. Wallace became one of my absolute favorite characters in the franchise because of those supports.

    Holy crap, 44 minutes! I've been joking in a lot of conversations that even Nino has more story focus and better writing than Lyn, so this should be a good watch.

    Why your Support Science is something I love to watch, you go over so many aspects of the character. Especially their supports and how they affect the character in a fashion showing that each one(even if not possible in the same timeline) stay to her character. Another overlooked aspect of Lyn that is shown is how she does compliment the other lords while adding to herself. The rare but great supports and scenes where both parties grow. To an extent, I do really like how she teeters a dangerous line in her campaign without challenge. Yet time later and new setting, where her strengths become weaknesses. Rattling her, becoming part of her next chapter to rediscover both what she lost and what she'll need to grow. Thank you so much Ghast, I look forward to showing my FEH friend this. Big Lyn fan and hasn't played a main series game yet.
