"Unlike typical “coming of age” journeys that Fire Emblem protagonists tend to undergo, Hector’s is coming to terms with who he is, and what the world needs him to be. Hector’s character development is literally nothing I have ever seen before in Fire Emblem, and even 15 years of FE afterwards, no lord has a similar journey. For the reasons I’m about to explain, Hector surpassed Eliwood for my favorite lord in the series, and I’ve never been more excited to explain why."

He wasn't my favorite lord, but he definitely wasn't my least favorite. This video showed me that you honestly can't take everything at face value. I dunno how you keep doing it, but every Support Science I learn more about a character I thought I knew everything about. Thanks dude. This video was absolutely amazing. Hector's definitely risen up on my list of favorite characters just in general. And please, keep this series up. It doesn't matter who's next, it'll be a treat just to learn more about them.

I couldn't agreee more; I always lumped Hector and Lyn in the same bunch as just being the super popular ones (to be fair, I never played FE7). After finally watching this video, I actually cried because I realized that Hector and I are the same. I'm not brash, but I define myself through my intellectual strength and feel the need to be the support for everyone around me at the cost of concealing my own emotions, especially my sadness. This video was an absolute masterpiece, and really touched the fiber of who I am. Thank you.

This video is fantastic, Ghast. You’ve outdone yourself. What I love about Hector is that he seems to represent the idea of manliness today. Men aren’t supposed to cry, they’re supposed to be strong and resilient. They’re supposed to step up when no one else will, and be protectors. Otherwise they’re seen as weak. Hector is the embodiment of manliness, which makes him relatable to several of us guys in the community. I’d love to see a video on Ephraim on your take of his actions, and how most people see him as a Gary Stu due to his skill. It’d be nice to see someone explain how if Ephraim hadn’t stood up and succeeded, he would’ve failed his father, the one thing he refuses to do again which he brings up in his new Heroes alt’s Lvl. 40 conversation. Once again, AMAZING video Ghast. Each one gets better and better. Remember that on your journey, together we will ride.

People who complain about FE7’s writing, while their complaints aren’t unfounded, they also miss some of the deeper interpersonal connections that this game thrives on. Heck, I even used the Oswin/Hector/Uther loyalty conflict as part of a college paper analyzing fictional Prima Facie Duty conflicts. Great video, Ghast. Maybe it is pretty obvious but I think the weapons he uses throughout the game kind of hint his colours He starts with axes , powerful but innacurate ,him at the start of the game blindly running off to eliwood's side I search of adventure and battle But then he is entangled in real problems he is not equipped to deal with, forced to grow Upon promotion he gains access to swords This can be quite strange as first as swords don't seem like Hector's style at all But they are there to represent his weaknesses and how he overcomes them They are weapons of greater accuracy but lesser power Him finally realising he can't go through life smashing things,he needs to actually consider everything around him This is something that was on the back of his mind from the beginning, judging from his conversation with eliwood about him helping Uther He is merely coming to terms with that although rather brashly as he doesn't stab with them in-game The armored status he gains when promoting is merely a title one He was already stronger than the ostian knights but now he has to also accept the true responsibility of the armor Later in fe6 he becomes a full fledged general of Ostia ready to be Lycia's proper shield He changes swords for lances although my headcannon wants to say that he is more akin to fe8 generals with full weapon triangle , surpassing his own military to become the symbol Ostia needs

First of all THAT VOICE ACTING THOOO. SO GOOD!!~~ I NEED MORE. Second, this aches to watch with school inching closer. College is rough. Writing my own characters and world, I think about the struggles I face daily and what my favorite characters from this series go through, and I hope it reflects well in my own work. I want to be remembered and surrounded by my loved ones when I go. I want my work to live on for me so I'm not forgotten. Even if it isn't received as well, or doesn't do as great as other creators, I want it to find its following and live on for me. It might sound cheesy but I want to leave a fire that doesn't go out. Might be a bit of a tangent but suffice it to say I think your work does this very well. I want my work to be analyzed like this one day. Keep it up, I can't wait to see more! I'll keep coming back to these to remind myself why I keep going through college. I have a lot of people I wanna see on here next but I'll leave it to you to decide. Buuuut, if I could suggest, maybe do one on Marth? I would love to see an Eliwood Vindication style video on the Hero King. With however many games he appears in, there's plenty to pull from.

I am glad to see a video like this; the more awareness there is of how deep Hector's character runs the better. If I may quibble a little with the conclusions you reached, I would say that my understanding of Hector's deepest nature is slightly, subtly different from your own, though the same in all the essentials. As you rightly point out, Hector's great strength as a character is his physical ability and steadfastness in his loyalty; his great weakness is his inability to deal with or even really confront his own emotional weaknesses, particularly as they relate to grief. At the same time, I feel you are a little off when you put this entirely down to his refusal to show weakness in front of others. About a decade ago, my grandfather passed away after a long battle with cancer. At the funeral, I found myself seated in the front row of whatever building we were in, looking at his coffin, and being entirely unable to cry. I can remember quite strongly feeling guilt, or shame, at the fact that I wasn't responding to the situation as I felt I should be. In the end I forced myself to cry by imagining some story in my head that had caused me to cry in the past - something about a dead puppy, I think. But I do still feel some measure of guilt, whether warranted or not, that I didn't cry in the way that I was supposed to, despite wanting to and feeling pressured to do so, rather than the other way around. And I have in the past suffered the consequences of bottling my emotions in the same way that Hector did when he exploded at Oswin. When I replayed FE7 years later and recalled Hector talking about how he couldn't cry for his parents, either in front of others or on his own, I felt like I understood a lot of what he was trying to convey, in the sense of the desire to cry but being unable to. I appreciated him greatly as a character for that scene alone, not because I necessarily felt the same way, but because Hector in that scene with Lyn /understood/ that this was a weakness. Here's the critical point: his inability to disperse his pent-up feelings of grief is a weakness, but more than that, Hector knows that this is a weakness, and that Lyn's ability to cry for her parents is in fact a strength. Hence why he calls her a strong woman. It's very powerful stuff. As for what you said in the video, you made it sound like Hector saw crying itself as a weakness, where honestly I believe he saw it as a strength, because it's something that he is physically incapable of doing. This dynamic between the two shapes a lot of their interactions throughout the game and, if you continue with the support in Hector mode, their development as characters as well. This of course doesn't discount the necessity of Hector developing as a character by becoming more aware of his emotional fragility, but one of the things I do find fascinating about Hector is that he doesn't truly ever learn to deal with his grief properly; rather, he becomes far more open to allowing others to act as emotional crutches for him the way he does for others, which feeds back into what you were saying about his being most comfortable as the tree for others to lean on rather than the other way around. Another interesting thing is that, as I think I wrote on your Eliwood video, Hector (and Lyn) obtain catharsis from fighting where Eliwood doesn't, so Hector's growing out of his reliance on conflict to deal with his emotional issues is another good way in which he is shown to be growing up over the course of the game. What else? Just a minor thing, but when Hector mentioned that his being at court would attract more attention than his being away, I interpreted that as more of a bit of self-deprecation given how little he helps his brother with politics and statecraft than it is suggesting that Uther would be put under scrutiny for consulting with Hector. Basically that Hector is never at court to begin with, so if he were actually involved in anything at all, that would be proof positive that something is amiss. Also when you said or implied that Hector is the least merciful of the three Lords in FE7, I'd actually go out on a limb and say that Lyn is the least merciful, at least in terms of the way she approaches her enemies, particularly in Lyn Mode. In fact, it's possible that Lyn is more misunderstood as a character than Hector is; if you ever do a SS on her I'd be interested to hear your opinions, as I feel there's a lot to say about her that is rarely discussed, in the same way Hector is often boiled down to his who-wants-a-fight persona. Oh, and I enjoyed the video and quality editing immensely. Mustn't forget to give credit where credit is due.

Ghast? You really know how to make me appreciate this series more and more. Since my discovery of it, its really changed my life and helped me understand what it meant to be your own person. I was not used to having friends to talk to and could not keep my attention in one place, but starting with the Blazing Sword, it brought me to a world like no other. Being in this fandom and seeing it change over the years has both enlightened me and disappointed me. I find myself excited with any new content, but like all fandoms, all that glitters is not gold. Still, what I've appreciated the most about the series is its characters. Whether they become too much of a trope that the series likes to reuse or are someone unique and interesting, it's the characters that have taught me about how to interact with people, how to act kinder and be more empathetic. That's why I appreciate your support sciences so much, it's really something I wish I could do as eloquently or organized as you do, but I find my joy in exclaiming to my friends about new favorite characters and why this or that is important. Listening to Hectors story in detail has reminded me how far I've come myself, and through all the trouble I've caused to hell, even now, I've changed and will continue to change. Its scary, maturing and growing up, gaining new friends and maybe losing some old ones in the process. Change has been something so scary for me, but it's because if stories like this that give me the strength to go on. This one goes out to my friends over the years, I know some of yall will watch this video and know my profile. Thank you for always being there for me, and I only hope I serve the same purpose even better. And thank you, Ghast. You're truly one of reasons I love this channel and series so much. Thank you for all that you do, and I cant wait to see more.

TL;DR: _I'm just really hype for Ghast's video on_ -edgelord- _edelgard in the future_ -> -i mean, I know its not described as a spiritual successor to FE:7 but the way its portrayed, it seems like it is going to be. three lords = three houses ? i mean i could be jumping the gun, b/c genealogy had 3 in sigurd, quan, and eldigan, but idk. 2 lords for FE8 was successor to gaiden-

Fundamentally speaking, both games do come from a similar aesthetic and foundation in terms of world structure from what's been established in FE6-7 and what we've seen and know so far from FE:3H, so you're not wrong for making that assumption.

In my opinion SS has more fleshed out characters then BS. Besides Marcus (who had 2 games to develop.) Ninian, Eliwood and Hector, SS cast outshines them all in terms of character development. Ephiram, Erika and Lyon. Seth struggling to get behind him falling for his Queen, Ross and Garcia having generally sweet family moments. Man, just wished SS didn't have the 5 support limit.

Sure, I’ve played the games and gotten most of his heroes forms, loved the world and franchise he’s from, but I’ve never sat down and really thought about what he had to do and who he became because of it. Thank you for opening my eyes, because Hector is an astounding character and I’m really glad I Now know why. Keep up the great work!

I never thought I could need a Fire Emblem video in my life. And I’m not even memeing. I can relate to this, especially in the fact that I’m very prideful but not in a positive way. What happens mostly is that I try to do stuff alone, but that pride shatters when I utterly fail at almost everything and that’s when I hate being around others because they’ll think I’m useless, helpless or weak, and I don’t know how to deal with those feeling without being overwhelmed or paralyzed by them. Maybe I could learn a thing or two from Hector and from this video. Thank you, Ghast.

Hector is near the top of my list for characters that have changed me (also my favorite characters). I made an instant connection with him when I first played the game when I was little. At first it was: cool nice guy who can beat just about anything. A shallow view but I was young and cared more about winning than the story. But as I grew up I thought about him more. I thought of how scared he was, about how scared I am to let myself or my family down. His inability to understand himself and the contradiction between how he feels and what he does resonates with me. I think there's also a weight on Hector's shoulders to be able to rule like Uther. To be as successful as his brother and to be someone he isn't. That exact struggle is something I've faced with having an amazing older bro. You get compared, you get put down because you're not like them. But your love for them stays no matter how tough life gets. That older brother of mine moved away a few days ago, but just like Hector I would rush to his side in a heartbeat if he needed me. Hector is a character I've grown up with, and he's grown up with me.

As a Hector fan, I feel like one of the big things you overlook, is not just his reliance in physical strength but reckless raw power. He's basically the protect and smash archetype, but in the actual best story in the game, of many great stories. He's a self proclaimed self trained, or untrained fighter. But you did nail just about everything else. The emotional weakness he masks is a lot masked by the reckless aggression

Wow great vid! I really liked the voiced segments and the editing was on point the whole way! Hector was always cool to me but was the overpowered sidekick character who's better than the lead that people prefer (there's a reason why if there has to be another FE character in Smash Bros people want it to be him) but I definitely like his character way more now. Seeing this video makes me really want Uther in Heroes now, he's so underrated as a side character.

Honestly; I had a level of respect for Hector as a unique character within Fire Emblem; and not just as the only Axe-wielding lord. As you said; his storyline is unlike any other Lord's - even Ephraim; his closest counterpart as far as breaking the mold is concerned; doesn't match up. I never thought deeply about his position, though. Honestly, I thought that he was over-hyped, so I never gave him too much thought. Plus, every time I played through FE7 when I was younger, I focused more on the surface-level Eliwood story, not Hector's. Hector is aware the entire time that he needs to be strong for others, though to an unhealthy standard. He is completely unable to allow himself to feel pain, to feel distress. Those are things that he seems to fervently hate. Instead, he wants to stop others from feeling those things; and take on the burden himself. Because he believes that people don't want to make their pain obvious; and when they hurt, he hurts. He can't bear to watch Lyn cry. He is completely willing to sacrifice his own livelihood and any chance he has at a long; satisfying life for the strength he needs to ensure that Eliwood succeeds. To me; these ideas hit me too deeply. While I can't say that I hold the strength to never cry; I have that same almost self-sacrificing desire to be strong for my family and friends no matter what. If they hurt; I would do everything in my power to try to take that pain away, no matter what that costs me. I've often wondered in positions of extreme anxiety - that I rarely let myself show or feel - what my life path is, whether in my dying days I will feel satisfied. And now I see that a character who I never gave the credit he deserved went through all of these questions. I guess, Ghast; I have to say thank you for highlighting this. Also a sarcastic "thank you"; because now I've got sketches and ideas for a Hector cosplay started and I don't need more Fire Emblem cosplays to do right now.

Hector reminds me of myself sometimes. When I was a kid everyone saw me as someone weak and pathetic, someone who can't even protect himself. As time passed and I grew up I started behaving different, I always tried to look tough and without equal, so that people could depend on me. But the truth is... I was running away from who I really am. I have always been a person who shows his emotions but I was hiding them so I couldn't look weak. I thought that if someone saw me crying or showing any weakness at all they would thought I was just a pathetic kid. Now, I don't care what someone thinks of me. I may be an emotional person, but that doesn't make me weak. If the situation demands it, I will be there to help those who are dear to me.

Hello, i just recently started playing the FE series (i was bedridden some months ago and watched almost all Mangs videos... what a voyage) and from his Hector playtrough i learned about this character and went to play FE7. Since i was 13(I am 37 right now) my favorite character of all time was Sabin Rene Figaro from Final Fantasy 6, exactly because he is Hector master monk version. He is a man put in check with his responsabilities and always seems to be there for the people needing him. Since FF6 dont use the character system FE uses, specially for Lords, Sabin never had the opportunity do develop as a character as Hector had, and even with just some moments of spotlight during the game he was able to catch my pre-teenager admiration of how i imagined a strong man should be. The, 24 years later i found Hector. He is LITERARY Sabin put on a different situation, with diferent friends, and a whrole game for himself to develop character. Hector in many ways is a refreshing character: With all his brashness and self confidence, i loved that the game didnt try to take this from him... he is not a dumb brute, but in fact a very intelligent one. Many times the games empathizes how he is capable of detecting even stealth specialists around him, like Mathew and many people that try to sneak on him during the game. He always know WHO TO BASH. He may question his decisions, but if you come to think, for the entire game, he NEVER BASH A INNOCENT! He fury and agressiveness is always focused on those deserving. The game gives a lot of opportunities for him to learn and grow, but never removes from him this most utter sincerity and honesty. If he dont like you, he make it clear, if he like, he makes it clear that if he is alive, you will also be. In a videogame era dominated by emo-driven protagonists, protagonists that try hard to be the most anti-heroic as possible , even to the point that sometimes i abandon games cause the protagonist is an asshole so big that i really want him to lose, to see a character so admirable, so MACHO (but not a machist) is a refreshing thing. Curiously i only came to know his fate in FE6 after i watched FE7, so i felt a little bit sad about him. I am sure that if the order of the games were reversed they should make his death a lot more heroic (probably with Lilina present) cause i am sure he would have a word or two for her. Man, i love this character so much that i cant chose who was his wife and think that he should had them all... together at the same time :P And that is not a wish i make for another man lightly :P

I'm glad that I've found this video to help understand FE Blazing Sword psychological themes. Great work.
