Lyman No. 55 Powder Measure - Features and Setup

Ойын-сауық

Short reloading video where I show the features of a Lyman No. 55 Standard Powder Measure.
I really like this unit, I've used it for quite a while and it's a life saver for any cartridge you are trying to reload in significant numbers.
I opted for this model because I only have a few cartridges I reload in bulk, and I don't have a turret or progressive press to mount something automatic to.
The set up can take a little while to get right but I find it is very consistent once I get it where I want it.
Leave a comment if you want to see something specific, feel free to share if you think someone else could benefit from the video.
This is for entertainment, I hope you find it entertaining.

Great vid, bought one of these things years ago and hadn't used it, so was having trouble figuring it all out till I found your vid. Thanks.

keep them coming. I don't reload at all but for translating manuals and understanding the process - your video helped a lot.

The graduation markings don’t have any reference to a known measure like cubic inches or cubic centimeters. However, if you keep notes and write down the settings it saves time the next time you set up for a particular powder/charge.

Thank you very much! I just bought myself a Lyman Crusher Expert II kit and was looking for something like this tutorial...

Thank you, I hope you enjoy your measure, I've had really good luck with it and it's still my main measure.

For loading pistol plinking ammo, I used to hand-hold an RCBS LIL Dandy measure and just go from case to case in a loading block. Then I decided to mount the measure in a powder measure stand. It was waaayyyy more consistant. So I tested all my other measures. That 4-5 inch long strap that comes with a measure that hangs over the edge of the bench or you trap the other end under a die in a single stage press is not the way to go. Your board looks pretty wobbly, too. Get a dedicated powder measure stand and watch your consistency improve greatly.

I have no consistency issues, but a good suggestion to consider.

I had one of those from the 60s. Nicely made, but not very good for small charges or stick powder.

True, stick powders are tricky. I have had okay luck with pistol charges but I'm a little scared of them at the same time.

Does your powder reservoir stays put? . I tried to screw mine in and tends to come loose

So far mine has stayed in. I don't think if it screws in, I think mine is just a compression fit. It will definitely rotate around if I try to rotate it.

@@shortreloadingvideos7571 Thanks man. That confirms what I was doing with compression only. Another big thanks to you. I always struggled getting accurate throws from this powder measurer . After I watched your video how to adjust the drum measure, based on the amount you you need, I did it and it worked! Finally I was getting very accurate throws, for the first time ever. Before this I was even thinking of selling it because the frustrations I had. Thanks again. Happy reloading

I do hate the Lyman 55. Tried to use it with N140, N160, Lovex S070, Norma 204; it NEVER gives the same amount of powder. It's a total disaster. I threw mine into a foundry and bought a RCBS competition powder measure, way better. Don't waste money with Lyman 55, it's a worthless piece of garbage.

I have this 55 a really like it but your right there is better for competition . Your not paying the same price either. With a powder trickler works just fine for competition.
