Lyle Umenhoffer
Lyle is one of the 316 survivors of the sinking of USS Indianapolis, the heavy cruiser that delivered components of one of the atom bombs to Tinian Island on July 29, 1945. A day later, enroute to a rendezvous with a battle group in the Philippine Sea, Indianapolis fell victim to the Japanese submarine I-58. Of 1,196 men on board, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remainder, about 900 men, were left floating in shark-infested waters with no lifeboats and most with no food or water. The ship was never missed, and by the time the survivors were spotted by accident four days later only 316 men were still alive.

What an amazing story, another example of communication failure, that SOS should have brought help! Hindsight is so perfect. Kert does a great job of getting stories from people, thank you for preserving this history!
It was a joy to know Lyle for many years. And it was many years before I learned he was an Indianapolis survivor. He and Mary were wonderful people. I assume this was recorded long before 2019, because we lost them both quite a few years ago. Thanks Kaviski 1 for preserving his story.

Hi. Thanks for watching. I believe I interviewed Lyle in 2014 or 2015. It has been my honor to meet and talk with so many from my parents' generation- the greatest generation. What will they say about us?

@@kaviski1 wow, I think we lost Lyle not long after that. By that date his wife Mary was already gone. Thanks for doing this. I hope to spend more time watching your videos in the future.

I am very fortunate that I got to meet Lyle and to record his story for all of us to share. I think it is impossible for any of us to comprehend what he and his shipmates endured for those days in the water.
