KZread started as a platform for fun and then it got "Monetized"! You are so honest about using your channel as a business, but some of them want us to believe otherwise. In real life, not many people buy a Hermes Bag every month, keeping up with that kind of lifestyle on camera can become overwhelming especially when it does not pay off. As usual your analysis is on point!!!

You are so right about formerly “stable” jobs. I got laid off after 40 years in a company that hired people in Singapore to do our former jobs. It’s a different world. I fortunate enough to be able to retire but the younger coworkers are in difficult situations now.

I was also struck by Jerusha's comment that becoming a content creator on KZread isn't something you can go to university to get a degree in. The oldest (and arguably one of the most prestigious) Schools of Journalism in Canada is at Carleton University in Ottawa. In addition to offering undergraduate degrees in journalism, communication, and media studies, the university also offers a degree in Media Production Design, which focuses on the creative digital industries, including KZread, podcasting, and so on. This isn't unique to Carleton University, either. Social media platforms are increasingly a huge component of many degree programs now, both in Canada and the United States. It's in the UK as well. It makes no sense. I do think it has something to do with it being a new profession. Once it's more established and normalized, I think those perceptions will largely disappear and it will be seen as any other job.

This was a great video! You made some excellent points and your analogies were illuminating. I’m sorry to see Jerusha leave/ take a break, I do think she’s authentically burned out. But, like you, I call BS on the You tubers claiming to have had epiphanies and giving away all their stuff. They seemed phony to begin with and I’m sure their luxury wardrobes are in storage just waiting for the right moment to suddenly reappear because they had “second thoughts” or whatever story they’ll manufacture.

I don’t know who Jerusha is and I don’t follow any other luxury channels because I don’t have time and I find most luxury influencers annoying 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don’t leave mean comments I stop following anyone I don’t care for and find annoying.

People think it’s easy and just fun: „how unfair you even get money for it!“ If people knew, how many unpaid hours it takes, to even start earning a single penny on KZread, and how much work it is to keep growing a channel, they might think differently. Just got to the end and realised you have listed KZreadrs ( incl myself) in your description - thank you, But also, this is my experience of the people I watch on KZread, not competitive, not toxic, and not scared to support each other.

Great video, Autumn! I enjoyed hearing your take on brand deals and “untrustworthy” reviews. I think part of the issue is content creators calling ourselves “content creators” instead of “influencers.” It’s a totally different mindset. I think it’s easy for content creators to forget that we aren’t just “creating content” but in fact influencing our viewers to make purchasing decisions that can easily cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. For most people, (myself included!) that is no small amount of money. Unfortunately, most people on social media aren’t as discerning as you are when it comes to brand partnerships and honest reviews. 😔

Yes yes! I agree this is a job! I didn’t use my degree at a full time job before retiring, but now I use my marketing degree! I learn new things all the time and it is so much work! Fantastic talking points❤ a lot of these topics are fascinating and give so much food for thought to those who have a hard time understanding why the content creating luxury handbag space exists. The KZread space and business model is evolving in ways creators cannot predict or determine equally. It is very interesting that there are creators who are supposedly giving up the luxury handbag hobby. I think you are absolutely correct that it’s a business move on their part due to the economy. The fact that ANYONE finds real self identity validation from owning luxury items is shallow and banal… but I know it happens. If you find a healthy level of joy, accomplishment in them…that validation can be valid. Everything can be enjoyed and appreciated in healthy approaches 😃

Very fair points. Luxury YT started as people who love handbags showing their collections and discussing their pieces for others who were thinking about buying. So there’s an expectation of authenticity and relatability, I think more than in other communities like say the watch community. I also think women have been socialized to not focus on themselves so having a YTer showcasing her expensive collection and making money from sponsors is jarring to some sadly.

Thanks, Deb! I know people do get annoyed with marketing in general, especially in the States where we get a constant barrage of it, but it's an important part of how businesses get paid and ultimately how employees earn a living.

It’s never worth it to associate yourself with toxic people. All it does is bring negativity to me which in turn makes me physically ill (makes my Crohn’s disease flare). Thankfully with age I’ve been able to step away from anyone who brings negativity into my life. Being on KZread can bring out the haters but you have to know your own worth and just to ignore. It mostly comes from jealousy and their own feelings of inadequacies. As with any career the more successful you become the more negativity is thrown at you.😢 Autumn you are a very intelligent woman and I always love listening to your views on different topics.🥰 Thanks for sharing.

Some great points here Autumn, I totally agreed with your views on this topic, especially around needing a degree to be a KZreadr. Makes me think about people who started PR companies before that was a thing, which was also laughed at, and now you can do a masters in Communications!

Always appreciate your perspective. Very fair and thoughtful. Overall, I think people are unreasonably critical of other “everyday “ people and fashion related topics. When a celebrity were to be in the same situation they wouldn’t think about it the same way since they are a celebrity and not a “real” person.

I really enjoyed this very balanced evaluation. I have only watched 3 of Jerusha's videos. Each one contained a prolonged rant which made it obvious that she wasn't really enjoying KZread. I think it takes a very confident intelligent person like yourself to recognize the motivation behind negative comments and not be strongly affected by them.

The best analysis ever! Absolutely find myself agreeing with everything. I think that KZreadrs are held to a different standard because virtually all channels start as amateur. So viewers think it is easy. It is not easy though! I think some of the people selling their collections are doing so for financial reasons rather than any moral epiphany! They most likely find themselves short of money. (Not thinking of any specific individual. A general observation.) Thank you for another magnificent video.

In the operating room I loved change…thrived on surprises…the more challenged I was in a day..the better I felt. So, I’m going for it on KZread for the challenge of doing everything myself and resting sponsorships that are already coming in….but being placed in the trash can 😊

I have a collaboration coming up this Saturday with David of David's Closet.

I think what is happening with is You Tube is a wonderful opportunity to make money with what you love doing. It is a great form of teaching people different subjects. Also a chance for some to get together as some people have become friends over YT. Luxury is fine, but I can't see carrying A purse on my arm that is the cost of my car! Some people have worked hard to get where they are, and some were born into it. We are so materialistic. They're just things, you can't take it with you. I admire people that do YT. It's lots of work!!! I wouldn't begin to know how to edit on the PC.

Thank you for addressing Jerusha's video. I watched her video and was confused about her reasoning. I feel like her decision to step back has another underlying reason that we know nothing about. She must have a thin skin which you know doesn't work in this arena......thank you again.........Tammy

As always, Autumn, this is a well thought out and well presented video. I’ve noticed over the last year or so a few content creators announcing their departure from you tube, for various reasons but with a general underlying theme and then a few months later, voila, they’re back with big announcement videos letting everyone know. Needless to say, I’m suspicious now of these departure videos and frankly, don’t watch them. But I wasn’t necessarily following most of the creators anyway. Their channels have a vibe I don’t connect with. I don’t even know who the big content creators are, but I’m pretty sure I’m not subscribed to them. I think the majority of viewers see this as a hobby. I respect and understand that it’s not, or may not be, but I think that’s one of the obstacles content creators face. At least for now. That may change. Who creators choose to align themselves with is going to play into their own reputations. That’s life. We’re all taught as kids to pick your friends carefully, because who you associate with is going to reflect back on you. If a creator accepts a fee or product from a particular company, they’re going to be associated with them whether they ultimately use or keep the product or not. Or align themselves with the company’s philosophy or business plan. That may be a hard concept for people, especially younger generations, to realize or accept. But it’s just the way it is. I appreciate your hard work with your videos, and even more so, your ethical approach to your topics. Have a good week💕

I 💯💯 agree with everything you said about this subject. 😂 Autumn and what I’ve seen is that the Luxury house’s strategy of raising prices so high has worked incredibly well for their business by both excluding out the masses and turning off people who watched the influencers who created the highest demand for their products,also it has worked against the resale market which isn’t that much of a deal these days and can’t sell their products anymore! I only have an issue when somebody abuses my trust. I am going to share a story about a beauty influencer who has been around for years. Not long ago, she created a texting list. I signed up because, sure, I have watched her for almost a decade and she earned my trust. It turned out the list was to sell expensive products, and the texts actually came more than one a day. That was an abuse as far as I was concerned, and I unsubbed. I realized she underwent a major change after a huge ordeal in her life. She survived, so good on her, but she brought a new, religious focus to some of her videos, and that is a hard pass for me. After so many years, to bring something new into the mix was not something I could handle, and so I stopped watching her altogether. Too bad, because she is embracing turning 40 soon and had she focused on that exclusively rather than trying to sell me expensive and questionably efficacious things while also proselytizing, I would have given her a chance. I wish her well, but my religion does not include proselytizing, so when other people do that to me, I just cannot handle it.

Great video Autumn. The only thing I would add is that KZreadrs are providing a service and we as consumers have to keep that in mind so that we can filter things for ourselves. For example an art KZreadr will try and review every paint out there, and I find myself having to actively remind myself that I don't need EVERY paint, or makeup product, or handbag, or whatever the case may be. Like you said with the camera KZreadr that might not own every camera, but the additional piece is that even if they do that doesn't mean they would own every camera if they didn't have a youtube channel about cameras. I think this is why some of my favorite videos are "if I could only have X number of something what would I choose." Great topic. I agree that things constantly evolve and that we need to give people the space to evolve as they see fit or to take a break when they need it. xoxo

I've participated in the Nordstrom sale promotions the past few years but I only show things I would actually use or buy and they're typically not the same as most other Nordstrom promo videos. I don't do much with Amazon because they pay so little. I'm surprised so many people do.

That's true yes, but the percentage they pay (percentage of the total sale) is so low that I haven't found it worth it, personally. And they've lowered their percentages over the years. Here's a list of what they pay per category. If you're a gamer or into beauty products (I promote neither) it's worth it. This is a such a good video, Autumn! I have a big luxury bag collection, but like many others, I stopped watching hauls regularly. I know which bags work for me and which ones don't. And with the current economy, I frankly can't afford it. Here is why I think the luxury community has a certain reputation. 1. Some viewers see luxury handbags as extra, so to compare it to loving Target (the example used in the video) may not work for them. People don't buy luxury bags from Target, but I could be wrong. I am an international viewer and we don't have Target here. 2. Viewers see the life style of KZreadrs and don't want to support them. Again, it is about those items and bags being luxury. They are not necessaries; hence some viewers may feel resentful. They can't afford such an easy life, why should they help support others' lifestyles? They resent the idea of helping pay for the luxury items. It has an element of jealousy here. 3. As for sponsored content, yes, there is a mistrust. Viewers may perceive KZreadrs as being unauthentic, even deceitful. They are being paid to promote a product, so of course, they are going to sing its praise. Famous people have more power and they have the money, even though they are paid. See the paradox here!! ;) 4. As for whether a KZreadr keeps the item/bag, there was a time when a few KZreadr would constantly buy bags and return them just to create a false persona--extremely rich lifestyle--when they didn't have that kind of life. It again created mistrust. 5. Some viewers may perceive being a KZreadr as not having a job. It's not a real job for them, so KZreadrs shouldn't have to gain an income from their videos. Very faulty thinking, of course! I've put some thought to all the things you mentioned in the video, and I support any video by at least liking it. My rationale is that a KZreadr spends hours thinking, planning, filming, editing, so the least I could do is hit the "like" button. Keep on going and creating!! Love from Canada!

You are spot on, Jerusha has a polarizing personality, either people really like her get her humour and see that she really does not take herself that seriously and a lot of what we see on camera is a "bit" ...for the camera, but some people truly absolutely seem to be enraged by her videos.

I think KZread can be a wonderful career if you are willing to put in the time and hard work. There’s no denying that it takes a lot of work to become a successful channel. I started my channel for fun and definitely not for the money……thank goodness or I’d be broke.😂 I admire people who are dedicated and treat it like a 9-5 job. I think had KZread been a thing when I was younger I would have loved to have done it on a full time basis.

I think it's great that the negative comments don't get you down. However, even though others may know, or not, that the commenter is saying more about themselves than the KZreadr, I can see how it still could hurt some people. KZread can be very toxic depending on the type of content one produces. Some of the commentary channels for instance - they have been dealing with things like doxxing or false copyright claims from other KZreadrs. 3 of those and your channel is gone, and good luck getting YT to listen or care. I know this video is about luxury content, just saying YT is sometimes very toxic and comments can wear people down emotionally. As far as Target, people go there for things they need (maybe) and some feel handbags are frivolous. Even though they watch videos about bsgs!

Excellent video. And yes, it IS a job. It's a lot of work to do social media and do it well. I've had blogs over the years and it too is a lot of work. However, I think a lot of people who do a good job tend to reach a state of burnout at some point and I really think that's where she is at. It makes me sad that she even said that because she's trying to point out that negativity is why she is taking a break, yet she threw probably one of the most negative comments ever out there! Not cool throwing people under the bus.
