Cadillac fall was self inflicted. The only thing harder than getting to number one is staying number one.
That's a heck of a lot of Mercedes sold recently, more than double of Acura! I was surprised to see SAAB selling near 50K at one point, just behind Audi.
Around the time Lexus shot to the top in Sales in the late 90s was around the time of the release of the first RX. Definitely no coincidence.
Very very eye opening. If I'm not mistaken though, most Mercedes and BMWs are leased but nonetheless still amazing😯
Underrated video
You could see Lincoln benefit from strong sales in the 80s and 90s with the 1st and 2nd generation Town Car. Then there is a sharp drop off with the introduction of the 3rd and 4th gen.
Lincoln almost caught Cadillac and then Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, etc. arrived on the scene. They are near the bottom now with not much hope of recovering. EV’s will not save them. The management of Lincoln by Ford has been incompetent.

Sadly, I personally really like what Lincoln is doing now, but it's not resulting in sales. :(
I personally don't considered Volvo a Luxury maker more like high end mass market my dad drove a used 1990 Volvo 760 for 3 years in my mid-late teens and it was in that time he fell in love with the first Gen Volvo S 80 due to the taillight design it reminded him of the Lincoln Continental Mark 4 and Cadillac Deville of the early 70s

In the 90s like the 760 your dad had I agree but todays Volvos are totally different. I would say the Tesla Model 3 and Y shouldn't be considered luxury but more like high end mass market as their interiors are rather drab. Plus Tesla couldn't touch Volvos build quality

Lexus took longer to start selling well than I thought. Probably the lack of a dealership network. Once that was established, sales exploded. I remember them being more popular in the early years, but I also lived in an area between two dealers. Possibly their newness made them stand out and were more noticeable.

Fantastic to visualize. Thank you! Two things. 1. Would you be able to recast and include Porsche? 70k+ units in 2022 would put them ahead of LR. 2. Compelling to note that BMWs stint on top corresponded with the greatest drivers car lineup in history...BMW 2001.

Looks like the recent stars are Tesla and Audi. Audi now has the cachet of what BMW was in the 90s. Their industrial design is second to only Porsche in mainstream luxury; and, I think that is the reason for their past 15 year growth.

Funny on how in 1998 the RX was first released everyone had to have one leaving Cadillac and Lincoln on the dust
Asian and European car builders produced products that never failed to draw consumers to showrooms. This coupled with intense focus on fit and finish, with mechanical high standards (the Japanese excelled at this) caused consumers sadly to avoid the US product. Whatever the Japanese elect to do, they are in many cases determined to be the best. Somehow this 'fell between the cracks' with domestic makers. At one point, their only approach (US makers that is) was to offer a 'rebate' ("Here, we will pay you to buy our car"). This paired with short term thinking (some Japanese makers had a '50 year plan'!) did not help, as they thought only about the next '3 months returns'. Actually it was an American who attempted to preach quality to US car makers ....sadly only to have to take his study to Japan . Charles Deming has been universally acclaimed as one of the Founding Fathers of Total Quality Management, if not the Founding Father. The revolution in Japanese manufacturing management that led to the economic miracle of the 1970s and 1980s has been attributed largely to Deming.

Quick version. Saab wanted to keep being Saab even when they were becoming a niche brand. They had a loyal, but small following. GM took over and tried to mainstream them to some degree. Saab wanted to keep being Saab, on GM's tab. GM and Saab management didn't agree on almost anything. When GM had to make cuts, GM management saw it as an opportunity to get rid of the problem.

@AtomicReverend

I would not go as far to say garbage. The rear wheel drive Fleetwood was an excellent car and not to mention the WWII generation was entering their senior years and they were diehard buy American and as seniors they bought luxury. Personally I would have bought a Lincoln Town car but I wasn't old enough to buy a car yet. Cadillac's big issue was GM allowed things like the Cimarron to be produced and then brought out the 4.1 liter that could have used a few more months of testing before being released on the public.
@runoflife87

@@AtomicReverend one should be very brave to call Fleetwood Brougham excellent car. Just a Caprice in disguise, nothing more. OK, that was a good fleet car, but not the personal luxury vehicle anyone would buy ( with big exception of rednecks/hillbillies of course). As for Cimmaron - it was actually more competitive on the market, but GM bosses totaly ruined the car using Cavalier dashboard (instead of Opel Ascona one) and weak engines. C-body DeVille/Fleetwood/75 limo was the biggest turd of'em all - weak V8, ugly exterior, cheap interior designed by elementrary school pupils.

Well I think it shows that Cadillac was in touch with what most buyers wanted. Yes, there was that counter-culture of minimalist 'Luxury' that wanted the BMWs and Mercedes, but Caddy was the elephant. However, tastes were changing and Cadillac failed to truly understand what a growing percentage of the market wanted in their "luxury". Missteps such as the atrocious Cimarron ruined their brand, the 4.1L and later Northstar ruined their reputation, and while some products like the later STS could and should have been excellent, they weren't. They were cost-cutted and unfocused, and GM simply could not bring themselves to abandon some old thinking (bigger is better) and "value engineering" the interior when the Imports were moving up.

In there minds eye, people compare an 80s Cadillac to a modern Audi, Mercedes, or BMW. These cars, the Audi and BMW anyway, were not so much luxury cars are 'European' cars. They also had mechanical problems and their dealer network was not what it is today. To give credit where it should be, it is the Japanese automakers that brought quality to all of these luxury brands.

Demographic. That's all you need to know. Older generation stick with certain brands. The manufacturer then live off reputation just like a sports franchise does if they have had recent success. The newest generation starts with a clean slate and is willing to cross shop. Also price doesn't mean luxury . Nice try. Are ford's F150s or corvette or 60,000 kias luxury? No.
