You could see Lincoln benefit from strong sales in the 80s and 90s with the 1st and 2nd generation Town Car. Then there is a sharp drop off with the introduction of the 3rd and 4th gen.

Asian and European car builders produced products that never failed to draw consumers to showrooms. This coupled with intense focus on fit and finish, with mechanical high standards (the Japanese excelled at this) caused consumers sadly to avoid the US product. Whatever the Japanese elect to do, they are in many cases determined to be the best. Somehow this 'fell between the cracks' with domestic makers. At one point, their only approach (US makers that is) was to offer a 'rebate' ("Here, we will pay you to buy our car"). This paired with short term thinking (some Japanese makers had a '50 year plan'!) did not help, as they thought only about the next '3 months returns'. Actually it was an American who attempted to preach quality to US car makers ....sadly only to have to take his study to Japan . Charles Deming has been universally acclaimed as one of the Founding Fathers of Total Quality Management, if not the Founding Father. The revolution in Japanese manufacturing management that led to the economic miracle of the 1970s and 1980s has been attributed largely to Deming.

I would not go as far to say garbage. The rear wheel drive Fleetwood was an excellent car and not to mention the WWII generation was entering their senior years and they were diehard buy American and as seniors they bought luxury. Personally I would have bought a Lincoln Town car but I wasn't old enough to buy a car yet. Cadillac's big issue was GM allowed things like the Cimarron to be produced and then brought out the 4.1 liter that could have used a few more months of testing before being released on the public.

OK, that was a good fleet car, but not the personal luxury vehicle anyone would buy ( with big exception of rednecks/hillbillies of course). As for Cimmaron - it was actually more competitive on the market, but GM bosses totaly ruined the car using Cavalier dashboard (instead of Opel Ascona one) and weak engines. C-body DeVille/Fleetwood/75 limo was the biggest turd of'em all - weak V8, ugly exterior, cheap interior designed by elementrary school pupils.

Well I think it shows that Cadillac was in touch with what most buyers wanted. Yes, there was that counter-culture of minimalist 'Luxury' that wanted the BMWs and Mercedes, but Caddy was the elephant. However, tastes were changing and Cadillac failed to truly understand what a growing percentage of the market wanted in their "luxury". Missteps such as the atrocious Cimarron ruined their brand, the 4.1L and later Northstar ruined their reputation, and while some products like the later STS could and should have been excellent, they weren't. They were cost-cutted and unfocused, and GM simply could not bring themselves to abandon some old thinking (bigger is better) and "value engineering" the interior when the Imports were moving up.

In there minds eye, people compare an 80s Cadillac to a modern Audi, Mercedes, or BMW. These cars, the Audi and BMW anyway, were not so much luxury cars are 'European' cars. They also had mechanical problems and their dealer network was not what it is today. To give credit where it should be, it is the Japanese automakers that brought quality to all of these luxury brands.
