Lutherstadt Wittenberg: Birthplace of the Reformation and a Turning Point in European History

On this episode of Searching for History, Erin, my brother Sterlin and I visit Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany. Wittenberg is located in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, situated on the River Elbe about 60 miles southwest of Berlin. The town is famous for its connection with Martin Luther. Wittenberg is his adopted home town and the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation. In this video we visit the Church of All Saints, where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door, the Town Church of St. Mary, where Martin Luther preached over 2000 sermons. We will also take a peek into the courtyard where Lucas Cranach the Elder’s workshop was located and spend a little time just walking the streets of Wittenberg. Join us as we visit Wittenberg.

It is also a great place to visit if you are interested in northern renaissance art. The Stadtkirche St. Marien zu Wittenberg (the City Church of Saint Mary) has arguably the best collection of northern renaissance paintings in Germany.

I visited Wittenberg in late August, 2017. That was the 500th anniversary of the start of the Reformation. I hadn't scheduled it later to coincide with the exact date. I found the Castle Church very peaceful and very moving.

I've wanted to see the home of the Reformation for many years, thanks for the tour. That's definitely a un-Lutheran Lutheran church. 😂

Yea, that church was pretty incredible. Wittenberg is definitely worth a few hours if you ever find yourself in the area or passing through. We stayed the night there on our way back to the Berlin airport.
