    Hi, Jessica!.. Love your video!.. I'm fairly new to the ceramic world and will be venturing my first attempt with luster!.. I have a small Skutt Firebox kiln and I'm curious as to the proper settings to do this. You had mentioned a 1 hour preheat, medium, and at cone 017. Are you programming in a Hold as well...? I'm applying it to glazed ceramic pendants. If I'm just accenting the front of the pendant can I set it on the kiln shelf itself. I figured because of the much lower cone I wouldn't have to be concerned about the already glazed piece fusing to the kiln... Would that be a correct assumption...? Thank you and I look forward to your response!.. :)

    Can you tell me how to apply mother of pearl? Does it need essence applied first? If so do I let it dry before applying the mother or pearl? And is one layer the best? I heard that it should not be over applied. The last two firings my mother of pearl was dull. I fired at 019 fast speed in my small skutt kiln. Thank you for your help.

    Can you help with a botched attempt? I added gold luster over a glaze called gold. Followed your instructions and the piece is not shiny, looks like dull bronze, except in a few stops. Looks like a bad glazing job but the piece is only 1" square. wish I could send photo. Your video gave me the courage to to do this for first time and I was so happy to find it. Thank you, I love all your videos!!

    Hi Melissa, the key to achieving a glossy luster finish is to apply it over a glossy glaze. The luster will have the same finish as whatever it is applied to. I am not familiar with the Gold glaze you used but if you want to send me an image via Facebook(you may have to friend me first) I will be happy to look at it. I am so glad to hear that my video encouraged you to give luster a try. Keep at it and I know you will get the results you are after. Best, Jessica

    Hi! I am getting back into ceramics and I would like to get really vibrant red, green, and blue colors and I also plan on adding duncan gold luster to my pieces. The kiln I have access to is a gas kiln, can i still achieve those results in a gas kiln ?

  • @JessicaPutnamPhillips

    @JessicaPutnamPhillips

    6 жыл бұрын

    yes, you can achieve good colors in a gas kiln but you'll have to fire the luster to a lower temp. There is a whole other method of getting luster from glazes which are reduction fired to cone 9-10. Check out the work of Beatrice Wood, she was amazing and did gas fired lusters.
