@@elbowgang9715 - Try and tell that to P.M. Dawn, after they got booted off the stage LOL! Then go listen to Sound of the Police, Bo Bo Bo, Hush, Krush Them, Rappaz R. N. Danja, M.C.s Act Like They Don't Know, South Bronx, The Bridge is Over, Step Into A World...damn, way too many to name! Just saw him live (again), and he's still one of the dopest M.C.s in the game, hands down! Doesn't need a hype man, raps all his own lyrics, freestyles for a long time & it's dope, and just knows how to move the crowd and rock the stage! Then go watch video of some mark like six-nine where the crowd raps more of his shit than he does and he just walks around the stage like a f****** idiot! I'd be asking for my $$ back for real! And he's totally correct about Busta Rhymes!! I saw him live a couple years ago, and he just put it down like almost no other! He does need a hype man, but you know how Busta Rhymes raps. But you could understand him, you could make out what he was saying and hear him, he's hype, he rocked the crowd, and he just had a wonderful stage presence! If you can't even rap OR write your own stuff...step off!! Shoot, what happened to biting being wack? And if u love the song for the beat...hype up the producer then! If the rapper is so wack that the beat is the only good part...how are they a dope rapper? Jmho Nas & Rakim are dope though! I was just talking about him being hot. He was deep into the battle rap scene, and he went after mofos!

He had sold albums, has grammy’s, conscious, lyrical, can rock a show, great features, legendary versus. What can’t the man do? Very well put! I would say that the one thing he left out about lists is that some people just do it for fun. No deep agenda or focused reason. Sometimes it's also just a simple need to put one's own thoughts in order and take a snapshot in time that shows how you felt at that time or were passionate about. At the oof the day it's like Lupe was really saying is that we all have an opinion that is based on our own personal biases.

Think Nas is the closest to the overall GOAT. Hes got the classic albums, classic songs, and the numbers to back it up. Hes the closest to having all the traits that make a great MC. Jay Z has better punches, Em probably has better rhyme patterns, Pac might be more poetic. But nobody touches all those traits as a whole better than Nas. I also think hes the best story teller in hiphop. Classic freestyle and moments to add. Longevity as well.

In the 90's, the heavy hitter TRUE rap labels DIDN'T generally sign wack MC's. U had to be AT LEAST good on the mic. I'm talking Def Jam, Loud, Bad Boy, Death Row, The Roc, etc. From there, u had legends like Biggie, Pac, Hov, DMX, Busta, Snoop, etc. who had the IT FACTOR to get the mainstream big time as well. They earned their credibility with their mic skills in the streets intitally though. And they still satisfied their core fanbase at the same time. Those guys would be all over MTV AND get love on pop radio. So these types of MCs were the TRUE TOTAL PACKAGE! From there, u had legends like Nas, Wu, Mobb, Redman, LOX, etc. who weren't all over pop radio and MTV. BUT they still had huge followings nonetheless though. So what that means is powerful labels like Death Row, Bad Boy, Def Jam, and the Roc had THE POWER to dictate LONG TERM mainstream policy. Which means SURE wack shit or pop rap would come and go. BUT the elite MC's who were the TOTAL PACKAGE had the staying power. Pac, BIG, Snoop, Hov, and DMX were among the biggest artists in ALL OF MUSIC! Not just hip hop! So when u have powerful forces like that, it EVENS the playing field! But with the advent of social media, MUCH MORE WACK SHIT seeps through the cracks. And those guys build such huge fanbases OF THE WACK SHIT that the record labels and radio station pay attention. So they can get their content to millions of people in manner that couldn't be done in the 90's. And those wack artists STILL won't have much staying power either. BUT they would have made HUGE MONEY faster in a lot of cases BEFORE their BULLSHIT RUN is over! So what KRS is talking about is LARGELY because of the elements I pointed out! The music isn't curated like it was in the 90's! There's MUCH MORE WACK SHIT than quality shit that hits the mainstream these days. Back in the 90's, there was MUCH MORE BALANCE!! So social media hurt hip hop in terms of the artists not being able to monetize their work the same. And secondly, MUCH MORE wack shit seeped through the cracks that WOULDN'T have back in the day. Even an artist like Hammer was a GREAT ENTERTAINER at least! No where near a great MC, BUT he had his lane! Some of these artists today FRANLY aren't elite MC's or elite entertainers. They just talk shit over a great beat. And the beat SELLS IT because it's about shaking ass and getting fucked up!

To me there can be 20 mc's/ lyricists at the #1,2,3 etc etc etc spot that deserve the spot these personalities saying that those spots are reserved for 1 specific person is like saying only 1 contributed the hip hop whatever generation your talking about.

Lupe the top of my list for sure. Never heard an emcee do what he does. But every list is subjective because music is subjective. Do you prioritize lyrics? hooks? performance? flow? storytelling? concept? punchlines? rhyme schemes? vocabulary? authenticity? longevity? Depending on that, my list would change. if I went longevity, I go for Jay-Z. Hooks, it might be 50. flow, it might be Twista or Busta. Punches, it might be Fab or Banks. It could change.

Each list is mainly about the Lister himself more than anything definitive about the artform . Any compiled list is, at best, self-expression . Therefore, I don't take any credence in any of them, not even my own lol .
