Lunch at Toughest Taiwan Prison | Taichung Men´s Prison | Short Documentary
The Taichung Men´s Prison is the biggest and toughest prison in Taiwan. It houses four and a half thousand inmates. Among them some of the most dangerous criminals of the whole country. Over a hundred life sentences alone and more than a thousand prisoners are serving sentences of twenty years or more.
Monotony, confinement and around the clock video surveillance everywhere dictate the lives of the inmates. Only one time a week the inmates are allowed to spend time on the yard.
The prison works with what is known as progressive correctional treatment. This means that prisoners are divided into four levels. The better a prisoner behaves, the higher their level. And this determines, for example, how many packs of cigarettes a prisoner can buy and how often he is allowed to have visitors. The most important thing, however, is that the length of imprisonment is reduced with each level obtained. For most prisoners, this is a good reason to cause as little trouble as possible.

I recently started dating a woman who's vegetarian for religious reasons. She's not a fantastic cook to begin with. She keeps insisting on cooking me dishes with meat, to which I really appreciate the gesture, but I've told her so many times I'm happy to eat veg. She really likes my cooking, but wants to cook for me. She doesn't like when I cook for her because I clean while I cook, so there's nothing for her to do other than eat.

5:00 the way the prison guard was greeted is super interesting. Every Taiwanese man learns it in basic training in the army, the prison system almost resorts back to what these men learned during their mandatory military training.

America is the only developed country that uses prison as punishment; every other country uses it as rehabilitation, as place to better yourself and prepare you to be a good citizen. There's a reason why the US leads the world in incarcerated citizens; it's BIG business, most prisons are now privatized and for profit.

Taiwan and China use different currencies, however both are called the Yuan in language form. $5000 (NTD) is roughly $190 Australian dollars, it’s pretty much 21-1, for US it’s about 30-1. The average salary in Taiwan is roughly $350-$450 USD a week, so what he gets sent, is the average persons weekly spending money outside.

I had that the exact same thought until I saw that it's a reward system to promote good behavior. Prisoners who behave can get more foods from their relatives and friends than those who don't behave. It's more work for the warden crew but this has a huge benefit of more obedient inmates and thus reducing more punitive actions being doled out. Punishments tend to lead to more angry and disobedient prisoners.

  • @HuskyAim

Prison should not be just a way to punish people. There needs to be a rehabilitation component otherwise you will just get repeat offenders. People like you, sadly, have dictated the way prisons work in the USA. You would rather keep incarcerating people instead of creating functional members of society.
