I really like how the first rock monster broker free of the cliff. That was a well done effect to blend it all in to the landscape like that, so it was invisible until it moved.

When I was a kid this is one of the films I wanted to remake. I used to watch it all the time on VHS and DVD. Tommy Cook was a child actor on the radio and film and was Ll’ Beaver on Red Ryder and did a ton of TV shows as well as voices for Hanna Barbara cartoons. Gary Clarke around was in AIP classics like Date Bait, Dragstrip Riot and How To Make A Monster, I guess he was filling in for Michael Landon from I Was A Teenage Werewolf. He was later a regular on The Virginian and I believe he moved to Arizona and when ever a western rolled in for production he was often called in for a bit roll like in Tombstone

In 1958 I was 5 going on 6 and the Mercury program was still in the planning stages. But looking at this I had NO IDEA we knew next to NOTHING about space travel, space suits ,weightlessness,a blue sky on the moon etc. Almost like the.makers of this film deliberately overlooked what we already knew.

I know the main, older actor (Dirk), is from another, sci-fi/horror movie, titled; 'Phantom From 10,000 Leagues'. And the 'good guy', younger actor (the escapee) played a teenage Frankenstein in, 'How To Make A Monster'.

I recall just loving this film seeing it on tv as a grammar school kid in the early 1960's. Starting out with poor pre-print elements with which to perform colorization makes for a unsatisfactory finished product which this colorized film appears to be. I hope better pre-print elements still exist for this film so we can see it as it was intended to be.

MESA OF LOST WOMEN (1953) has giant spiders too, and makes a great double feature with THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION (1975) or EARTH VS. THE SPIDER (1958). What is it with the giant spiders especially in the 50s movies about planets populated by pin-up models? There's one in QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE (1958) also. TARANTULA is a 50s movie too, but it's set on Earth with the typical for the time plot device where they attribute the enormous growth of grasshoppers and scorpions to atomic radiation. TARANTULA and THE BLACK SCORPION aren't the first of the subgenre but they work pretty well as a double feature because they both feature giant arachnids, unlike the original big bug flick THEM! with the ants and BEGINNING OF THE END with the locusts or grasshoppers,

A movie that should have been in color. I don't say that much. However, making the sky blue on the moon when it has no atmosphere..
