The main purpose of this video was to quickly demonstrate how I created the color morphs for a soap made for the August 2023 Soap Challenge Club! Since the guidelines said only white could be used to create an ombre, I wanted to see if I could still accomplish a more interesting color palate using my knowledge of FD&C water soluble dyes.
Mica is generally the go-to colorant for bright, colorful soaps. They are predictable, stable, and generally do not bleed. this makes them highly desirable in Cold Process soap. Lakes and Dyes on the other hand have a tendency to migrate and can morph in unpredictable ways. But I was curious to see how that could be used as an advantage rather than a hinderance.
I am fairly pleased with the results and I think there is a ton of potential here for really neat color combinations, but there is still a bunch of testing that needs to be done. So I would suggest that anyone looking to explore this avenue should take their time, take lots of notes and pictures because this is (as far as I know...) fairly uncharted territory! So proceed with caution, but also... have a freaking blast 😊
